10 Quarterback Battles Worth Watching

Matt Stafford and Daunte CulpepperWe're entering a dark period of the NFL life right now. Nothing is going on. Players and coaches are on vacation. With that we look at 10 quarterback situations worth looking at before training camps start in late July, because, well, it's always about the quarterback.

1. Detroit. Matthew Stafford vs. Daunte Culpepper.

The situation: It's the same old argument. Do you start the rookie or the veteran? The No. 1 pick of the draft is Stafford, but the vet with a chance to win a few games is Culpepper. Stafford is the future but you don't want to damage it. For every Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco there's a Ryan Leaf and Vince Young.

Solution: Start Culpepper and wait until 2010 for Stafford.

49ers Alex Boone Avoids Temptation by Not Leaving Hotel Room

There are plenty of temptations for guys in their early 20s, just out of college, and suddenly wealthy. Actually, you don't have to be recently graduated or rich, just in your 20s. But it's only news when professional athletes get in trouble.

Like, for example, former Ohio State offensive lineman Alex Boone, who was expecting to hear his name called on draft weekend in late April until, well, he got drunk off his ass and lost his mind.

Singletary Almost Makes Crabtree Cry, but in Good Way

I'm guessing Mike Singletary doesn't have much of a poker face. Of course, he probably doesn't need one, either. He just wills himself good cards, or, worst case, he intimidates his opponents into folding, even with high-percentage hands.

Singletary is an NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champ, and now he's the 49ers head coach. He took over for Mike Nolan last October, and one game into his tenure (a 34-13 loss to the mighty Seahawks), Singletary ordered Vernon Davis to the showers early in the fourth quarter for pouting.

Needing a Corner, Niners Call Dre' Bly

Dre Bly signed by 49ersSan Francisco's secondary took a huge hit on Tuesday with word that veteran cornerback Walt Harris would likely miss the season with a torn ACL. The Niners wasted little time trying to restore some defensive depth, signing veteran Dre' Bly to a one-year deal on Thursday.

Bly will likely compete with third-year man Tarell Brown for the starting cornerback spot opposite Nate Clements.

Walt Harris Tears ACL, Likely Out For Entire Season

We haven't even gotten to training camp, but teams are already losing players for the 2009 season. Veteran 49ers cornerback Walt Harris tore his right ACL during practice on Tuesday and will likely miss the entire season, according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

The injury occurred when Harris got tangled up with the wide receiver Dominique Ziegler during a drill. The Niners aren't ready to rule him out for the entire campaign, but the odds are against seeing Harris on the field again this season. Or any season.

Vick Watch: Patriots? Rams? 49ers? Bills? Seahawks? Saints? Raiders?

Michael Vick's release from prison Wednesday morning in no way ensures that he's going to play in the NFL in 2009. But the mere fact that Vick is headed home has prompted a new round of speculation about which teams might be willing to give him a second chance in the NFL.

Hill May Be Locked In as Niners' QB

Shaun HillWhen asked about San Francisco's quarterback situation on Monday, Niners head coach Mike Singletary responded: "We've got a ways to go. Alex [Smith] and Shaun [Hill] have to continue to compete, not so much against each other but against the best quarterbacks in the league, because that's what it's going to take to win."

I read that as saying that both QBs need to improve between now and the season, but that neither is guaranteed the starting job. Niner insider Kevin Lynch of SFGate.com had a much more definitive take on the declaration.

NFL Wideouts Still Wanted

There are several wide receivers who are on the free-agent market. Let's take a look at some who are available and where they could go.

San Francisco Gets Its Go-To Receiver

Who moved to the head of the NFL class during the draft? Find out with FanHouse's team-by-team 2009 Draft Grades.

With the 10th overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers had the good fortune of having one of the best (if not the best) players fall into their laps.

There are a number of theories as to why Michael Crabtree was still available at the No. 10 spot, ranging from his lack of a 40 time, to the alleged "diva" attitude he displayed in St. Louis and Cleveland during his visits, leading to an hilarious battle of wits between Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach and Browns coach Eric Mangini.

49ers Draft Nate Davis in 5th Round

Last summer, as Nate Davis prepared for his junior season at Ball St., some scouts thought he had the potential to be a first-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He got off to a fast start but shaky showings against non-MAC teams -- including Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl -- raised questions about his productivity.

Then, at the NFL Combine, Davis measured only 6'1", struggled through the passing drills, and that was the beginning of a tumultuous few months. In March, only one team attended his pro day, and the news that he might suffer from a learning disability further lessened his draft value.
