SUPER BOWL XXIX
Date: Jan. 29, 1995
Site: Joe Robbie Stadium
Score: 49ers 49, Chargers 26 (MVP: Steve Young)

This is the time of year that Andre Coleman's cell phone rings. Friends and colleagues he's come to know recently see Super Bowl highlights on television, hear his name, and commence dialing.

That was you?

Yes, it was.

As a rookie kickoff return man for the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, Coleman set a record for most return yards that stands 15 years later. Of course, the tradeoff was a 49-26 beatdown by the San Francisco 49ers, who got six touchdown passes (and no interceptions) in a near-flawless night from Steve Young.

SUPER BOWL XXIII

Site: Joe Robbie Stadium
Score: 49ers 20, Bengals 16 (MVP: Jerry Rice)

Sometimes Ickey Woods is stopped these days by perfect strangers with the same request he's been getting for more than two decades.

His answer, likewise, is the same.

"I don't shuffle anymore," he says.

Oh, but there was time when Woods shuffled his way into our hearts -- and we shuffled with him.

We haven't even reached the Super Bowl and the "T.O. Delusional Statement Train" is in full throttle. Terrell Owens, who was just named to USA Today's All-Decade Team, stated that "hands down I'd be close to Jerry Rice's records if I had been with quality quarterbacks like he had. He had Joe Montana and finished with Steve Young. That wasn't a dropoff.

"Say I had been with a guy like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Drew Brees all of my career. Are you kidding me?"

San Francisco 49ers fans will only get to see seven regular-season home games in 2010, as the 49ers will "host" the Denver Broncos in London in October.

The Broncos announced on the team's web site that they will travel to London for a road game against the 49ers on Sunday, October 31.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said he's excited to be taking his team to Wembley Stadium:

They seemed to have it firmly in grasp for the past few weeks, but Sunday it became official: The St. Louis Rams will have the first overall draft pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

The Rams "clinched" the worst record in the NFL Sunday when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 28-6. While the score is lopsided, the game was in doubt for much of the afternoon. The Rams actually held a 3-0 lead at halftime and trailed by only one (7-6) after a fourth-quarter field goal by Rams kicker Josh Brown.

The Niners must have gotten tired of toying around with what would have been a dubious loss, however, because they scored 21 points in the last seven and a half minutes. Vernon Davis caught a 73-yard touchdown strike from Alex Smith and Frank Gore twice punched it in from inside the 10 for touchdowns.

Isaac BruceNiners wide receiver Isaac Bruce seems to be ending his NFL career much the way he played it. Quietly, and without much self-promotion.

The last remaining Los Angeles Rams player still active -- Bruce was a second-round draft pick there in 1994 -- is preparing for what figures to be his last hurrah.

Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome, where Bruce was a standout until he left for San Francisco after the 2007 season, figures to be his last, capping a prolific career in which he compiled 15,208 receiving yards – second-most in league history -- and 1,024 catches, which ranks fifth among NFL receivers.

Now the dean of a young, developing 49ers receiving corps that features first-round draft pick Michael Crabtree, Bruce, 37, was supplanted from the starting lineup in mid-season by Josh Morgan. This week, Morgan and other 49ers receivers approached coach Mike Singletary and Morgan offered to return his starting spot to Bruce, a four-time Pro Bowler and one of the signature players in the Rams' "Greatest Show on Turf" Super Bowl era.

Zebra Report: Fun With Formations

By Matt Snyder 12/23/2009 10:00 AM ET

Monday night, the Washington Redskins took a page out of, well, someone's old-school playbook. They attempted to run the old "swinging gate" from a field goal (known to officials as a "scrimmage kick") formation. From where I sit, the timing couldn't have been better. Not only do I believe we have never gone through the legalities of offensive formations yet in the Zebra Report (side note: I've been running this feature now for less than two seasons and I can't even remember if we've covered something or not. And I'm 31. Is this what aging is like?), but I've gotten a few e-mails about possible illegal formation infractions in the past couple weeks as well. It's like the karma police intervened and handed me Jim Zorn's coaching carcass on a silver platter.

Anyway, yes, obviously the swinging gate is a legal formation since nothing was called by the officials after they had a timeout to think about it. Since I received a few questions on the matter, we'll delve a little deeper into formation rules. We'll discuss that, some general guidelines and tackle two e-mails. Also, stay tuned even if you don't care about formation rules, because there are some other random tidbits to cover.

DeSean JacksonPHILADELPHIA -- DeSean Jackson is an instant highlight -- the kind of player the NFL had in mind when it created the NFL RedZone channel. The Eagles' electric second-year wideout is a threat to score from any spot on the field anytime he's open, which seems like it's all the time, as he apparently possesses the ability to elude defenses by becoming invisible and reappearing in impossibly open space. His breathtaking skills have won him fans around the football-crazed country, but his biggest fan might be his very own grizzled redheaded coach.

"He loves to play the game," Andy Reid gushed Sunday, after Jackson's six catches for 140 yards helped the Eagles beat the 49ers 27-13 and clinch a spot in the playoffs. "He's like all of us were when we were kids, out playing in the backyard. He just has a good time, and he's doing it in the National Football League, which is amazing."

Massive Snow Storm Delays NFL Games

By Adam Gretz 12/19/2009 2:25 PM ET

A massive snow storm that is dumping as much as two feet of snow on parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States has forced the starting times for two NFL games on Sunday to be pushed back.

Larod Stephens-HowlingSAN FRANCISCO -- At least the Arizona Cardinals recognize their own annoying tendency to cower when they're on the cusp of greatness.

A few mistakes against a problematic division opponent, that can be expected. But seven turnovers against the perpetually rebuilding San Francisco 49ers?

That was absolutely crippling Monday night at Candlestick Park, as a fired-up 49ers defense forced a franchise-record seven fumbles and recovered five of them, plus added two interceptions of Kurt Warner. The lethal combination of turnovers, penalties and overall embarrassing play became a 24-9 banana peel of a loss beneath the skidding feet of the defending NFC champions.

"Obviously, it was ugly for us tonight," said Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt, whose team started off the night with three offsides penalties on San Francisco's first drive, and saw it snowball from there.
