    • Ex-Bear Dan Hampton to Apologize for Katrina, 'Brokeback' Comments
    • The next installment of the Pro Football Weekly TV show will feature an apology from former Bears defensive tackle Dan Hampton, who now serves as an analyst on the show and made a pair of offensive comments last week. Hampton has been widely criticized for saying he thinks that when the Vikings take on the Saints on Thursday night, they should hit New Orleans "like Katrina." • Lovie Smith
  • Regular Season Record: 52-44-0
  • Postseason Record: 2-2
  • Experience: 6
  • Career Record: 54-46-0
  • Lovie Smith took over the Bears in 2004, taking the reigns from Dick Jauron following Smith's stint as the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.

During Smith's first season with Chicago the team went just 5-11, but they rebounded to win the NFC North in 2005. Despite the loss of starting quarterback Rex Grossman that season, the team's rebuilt defense helped Chicago reach the playoffs before falling to the Carolina Panthers in the divisional round.

The next year, the Bears improved to 13-3 for the team's second straight divisional crown and the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Chicago beat Seattle in the divisional round with a 27-24 ... About Lovie Smith »

Chicago Bears History

The franchise began in 1919, playing in Decatur, Illinois, 180 miles southwest of Chicago as the Decatur Staleys. After one year playing as an independent team, the became part of the NFL's first season in 1920, and the following year, were relocated to Chicago. In 1922, the nickname was dropped in favor of the Bears.

The team was one of the top franchises in the early years of the NFL, beating the Buffalo All-Americans for the 1921 NFL title - gaining revenge for an earlier defeat to Buffalo that season with a December win that eventually was ruled to decide the league's title.

Chicago won the first-ever playoff game in 1932, beating Plymouth for the NFL crown, as before that, regular-season standings decided the NFL champion. The Bears beat the Giants the following year to repeat as champions, but lost the 1934 title game in a rematch with New York.

The Bears' peak came in the 1940s, when the team won four NFL titles in seven seasons, starting the decade off with a 73-0 rout of Washington in 1940. The next year, Chicago beat Green Bay to decide the Western Division title, then beat the Giants for the NFL crown. Chicago fell to the Redskins in the 1942 NFL Championship, but won the title back the following season. Chicago beat the Giants again in 1946 for another title, but the team began to slip following that win.

Chicago wouldn't grab an another title until 1963, when they beat New York again for their eighth NFL title.

The Bears didn't find great success in the Super Bowl era until 1985, when the team went 15-1 in the regular season. Chicago rolled to a 46-10 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XX. Chicago returned to the Super Bowl 20 years later, but lost to the Colts in Super Bowl XL.
