What kind of sports fan would drop well over a hundred dollars for the jersey of their hated rival? An Eagles fan with a deviant idea, of course.

One loyal Birds fan who contributes to Bleeding Green Nation thought it would be a good idea to purchase a Tony Romo jersey and have it altered a bit. He writes about putting the jersey on for the first time:

i almost threw up ... im dead serious ... my gag reflex kicked in like 3 times putting it over my head but i still didnt have second thoughts of my purchase ... and i want to know the oppinions of you guys would you honestly rather have romo then mcnabb ?

Now, we're sensing a tinge of sarcasm from our fellow Eagles fan.

Shocker: Donovan McNabb Is on the Hot Seat

This summer has been relatively quiet in terms of Eagles news and drama compared to years past. Aside from the issue of what the team will do with talented corner back Lito Sheppard, about the only thing Eagles fans had to talk about was Donovan McNabb's sore shoulder.

With McNabb's health once again entering the conversation, it's no suprise that Fox Sports list McNabb as one of 10 NFL players on the hot seat in 2008. But they didn't stop there, oh no, they had to resort to the tried and true way to make your article lose all credibility. They went to sit on Santa's lap.

In a town whose fans would ask Santa Claus, 'What have you done for us lately?' the guy suiting up at quarterback never feels comfortable sitting down in Philly. With understudy Kevin Kolb learning more of the playbook every day, the pressure on McNabb will intensify. But he could keep Philly happy by handing the ball to Brian Westbrook and flipping it to rookie DeSean Jackson. Here's some good news: the offensive line returns intact. Here's some bad news: Eagles quarterbacks were sacked 49 times last season.

Despite resorting to the Santa garbage, there is some truth to McNabb being on the hot seat. After all, McNabb is the quarterback of the football team in Philadelphia.

That guy is always on the hot seat.

Patriots' Wes Welker on Asante Samuel: 'He Chose Money Over Championships'

Asante Samuel spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowls and got to another.

So it was a little bit of a surprise when, after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in March, he said, "I just want to be able to win and get back to the Super Bowl.'' After all, if his real motivation was to get back to the Super Bowl, wouldn't he have been better off staying in New England?

His former teammate, Wes Welker, thinks so.
Says Welker:

"Asante's a great player, so it hurts not to have a guy like that. But then again, it's part of the business of the game," Welker said. "He chose money over championships, and that's the way it goes sometimes."

That quote comes across as though Welker disapproves of Samuel's choice, but personally, I don't begrudge a player for getting as much money as he can. If money was Samuel's primary motivation, more power to him.

Philadelphia Sports Columnist Bill Conlin Suspended for 'Blueberry Harvest' Remark

That was a panel of Philadelphia sports reporters discussing the Eagles' minicamp. At the end of the clip, the longtime Philadelphia newspaper columnist Bill Conlin said in response to an e-mail from a viewer, "Amazing that guy would leave the blueberry harvest to send that off." The other panelists then laughed before one said, "Don't mock the blueberry harvest, mister."

I didn't get what was so funny about Conlin's comment that all the panelists laughed, but I also didn't see anything offensive about it. Apparently some people did find it offensive, though, because after the jump we have a video from the following day of the station's apology.
The apology:

"Panelist Bill Conlin made a remark that may have offended some of our viewers," the prepared apology stated. "His comments does not reflect the views of our network."

So what was offensive about it? Apparently some people thought it was racist. I'm not really sure why -- is the implication that Conlin was saying that picking blueberries is something that Latinos do? Call me dense, but I don't get it.

UPDATE: A commenter explains the offense:
It was racial, unethical and very disparaging. I am from Vineland, NJ where the emailer was from and Bill Conlin was pretty much calling him a hispanic who picks blueberries in the fields during the harvest season. I guess you would have to know the area to get it!

Winston Justice Lined Up at Right Guard Instead of Tackle

The Eagles kicked off another week of Organized Team Activities yesterday and a couple of players were moved around to new positions. Dan Klecko, who was initially brought on to play fullback, was moved to the defensive side of the ball after the Eagles traded for backup fullback Luke Lawton from Indianapolis.

In a more interesting, and perhaps significant move, the Eagles asked former second round draft choice Winston Justice to line up at right guard for the first time in his career.

"They came to me this morning, and they're like, "You're playing guard,' " Justice said. "I didn't really have much time to prepare for it, but I tried to do the best I can."

Justice said offensive-line coach Juan Castillo was the man who gave the order, which was foreshadowed by nothing and followed up by just as little.

Part of the reason Justice was moved was the absence of stud Shawn Andrews who was excused on Monday for personal reasons.

The Eagles and their fans don't expect much out of Dan Klecko who is nearing the end of his career. He'll likely be a nice veteran addition to the Eagles special teams but any productivity they get out of him elsewhere is a bonus. Justice on the other hand was a second round draft choice under Reid and his progression as well as his position will be something fans should keep a close eye on.

McNabb Got the Randy Johnson Treatment

Donovan McNabb has been known to have some quirky off season workout rituals and he continued that this year. McNabb took part in a training program led by Brett Fischer whose client list includes the likes of Major Leaguer Randy Johnson.

McNabb worked with Fischer in Arizona during the offseason with a throwing program, which concentrated on using his legs for balance and stability. It's a method that Fischer has used on pitchers for years.

"I felt that early on last year, I used a lot of upper body instead of using my legs," McNabb said. "Now knowing how the whole body feels, it's kind of just (like) coming off the mound."

A few recent news items on McNabb had seemingly complained about Donovan's high sack totals as a sign of his inability to move on his recovering knee. McNabb's high sack totals last year had as much to do with his penchant for holding on to the ball too long in hopes of making a play.

This latest anecdote on McNabb comes as the Eagles gather in Philadelphia at the NovaCare Complex for one of their yearly OTAs. These aren't mandatory practices and one notable player did not attend, cornerback Lito Sheppard.

Eagles fans everywhere have to be excited about the prospect of a near 100% McNabb at the helm this year. Excited about the prospect of Lito staying home? Not so much.

Eagles Considering Using Lito Sheppard as Wide Receiver

The Eagles had been shopping former Pro Bowl corner Lito Sheppard around the league ever since the day they signed standout Asante Samuel. The Birds couldn't find a new home for Lito because they were unsatisfied with anything other clubs offered in return. Now it's being reported that the Birds may try to find somewhere else new for Lito to play: on the offensive side of the ball.

My colleague Matt at The700Level.com writes:

Seltzer [of 950 ESPN] commented that in the past, Lito had floated the possibility of lining up at receiver to Andy Reid, but the Eagles never went for it. Now, with his starting job in the secondary taken by free agent Asante Samuel, the Eagles might be willing to grant the request to keep Lito happy in the event he can't be traded for what the front office considers his value to be. The whole idea is pretty odd (and oddly entertaining), especially considering that Lito is all of 5'10", and they've got enough undersized receivers to field an arena league team.

Just when you think you understand the NFL or a team like the Eagles you hear a report like this. What's next? Is somebody going to tell you that Freddie Mitchell is making a comeback?As Matt says, it would certainly be strange to see Lito on the offensive side of the ball. I'm guessing that this would be more of a very rare occurrence type thing like when some teams would bring in a freakishly athletic quarterback to line up at wideout just to throw off the defense.

Jerry Rice Compares DeSean Jackson to Devin Hester

It's often difficult to get excited about the NFL in the middle of May. Then again it's not everyday that the best receiver to ever play the game praises one of your team's newest wideouts.

As a follow up to a story he wrote on Tuesday about DeSean Jackson in which somebody compared the former Cal star to Allen Iverson, Eagles beat writer Les Bowen chatted with Jerry Rice. The Hall of Fame receiver has ties to Jackson through DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment and had worked with him prior to the draft.

They talk about Jackson's family, his father in particular, being an off the field distraction. Rice says DeSean needs to grow up, be a man, and do what's best for his team. Nothing out of the ordinary there. But what gets me excited as an Eagles fan is Rice's response to Bowen's question about what current player Jackson resembles.

"Devin Hester, as a punt returner, but (Jackson is) more advanced as a receiver."

I can officially not wait to see what kind of impact DeSean will have on the Eagles (previously) pitiful return game.

Reid On Philly Being a Tough Media Town

If there is one job in the city of Philadelphia that is scrutinized more than the Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, I'd hate to have it. Andy Reid has been driving the Eagles ship for almost a decade now and the Philly media has been following along in his wake since day one.

What does Andy think of all the people that cover sports in Philly? Ehh-hem, hem (that was a throat clear)

"The media here takes a lot of pride in being tough, and I think that's good," Reid said. "I like that challenge, and they're the toughest in the NFL. I tell that story about Bill Parcells. My first year as head coach, we played the Jets in the preseason. Bill Parcells grabbed me and said, 'Listen I coached both New York teams, and the Patriots, and you are in by far the toughest media market in the NFL.' And that's true. Guys are competitive, guys are tough, they want the story, they want to grind - and I understand that."

Reid's quotes are from a sit down he had with Comcast's Neil Hartman. It's a nice glimpse in to Andy's thoughts on McNabb, Lito, BDawk, the draft, his family, and basically the current state of the Eagles.

He calls McNabb the best in the business but also jokes that he has to call Donovan on the phone to remind him to lay off the Thousand Island dressing. Donovan's not fat!

Terrell Owens Thinks Donovan McNabb Would Be Better Than Tony Romo at Something

As pointed out ealier by FanHouser Ryan Wilson, Terrell Owens acting debut on Flava Flave's Under One Roof was far from impressive.

In order to garner up some attention for his appearance on the sitcom, Terrell was doing the media rounds on Sunday night and appeared on Sports Final on NBC10 in Philadelphia.

In typical Philly fashion, the hosts ask the former Eagle who he would choose between Donovan McNabb and Tony Romo when it comes to acting ability. Terrell says he'd go with McNabb because he has a "great personality and is fun to be around on and off the field."

Really? Terrell didn't seem to like to be around McNabb back in 2005 when the Eagles refused to pay him "what he was worth."

I'm sure Tony isn't losing any sleep over the slight by his wideout. And even if he is, he once again has Jessica Simpson to go home to and make him feel better.

Jon Bon Jovi Loses Money on Arena Football, and He's Fine With That

Jon Bon Jovi was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile today, and the subject of his ownership of the Philadelphia Soul of Arena Football came up:

Steve Croft asked Bon Jovi if he makes money on Arena Football, and Bon Jovi acted like his answer, "No," should have been obvious. He then added, "But we're not losing a lot of money either."

Bon Jovi says he hopes to own part of an NFL franchise some day, and he explained that his involvement in sports isn't about making money. He's doing just fine in music, and he says sports aren't a particularly wise investment, but he sees owning a sports team as an opportunity to get involved in his community.

I think that's basically what keeps Arena Football afloat: Owners who have a lot of money, want something to do, and think owning a sports team would be fun. Nothing wrong with that.

McNabb Doesn't Exactly Sound Thrilled With His Weapons

Much like the Eagles offensive personal moves this off-season, Donovan McNabb's Yardbarker blog has been rather quiet. But his tour with Novartis to raise awareness for hypertension and high blood pressure brought him to the Keystone State's capital.

While McNabb was in Harrisburg, not surprisingly, he met with former Philadelphia Mayor and the current Governor of PA, Ed Rendell. For those unfamiliar with the affable former mayor, Fast Eddie is quite the sports fan and even appears on Comcast Sportsnet's Eagles Post Game Show to help analyze the games.

As usual when you get the Eagles QB in the house, things turned to football and the typical, "Did the Eagles do enough to compete?" questions.

McNabb answers honestly, but still doesn't seem thrilled with the tools at his disposal.

Q: Did the team do enough this offseason to compete for a Super Bowl?

A: We have enough to compete right now. If there is a chance to continue improving our roster after June 1 than we should look at that too.

Q: Without any new offensive weapons, how will the team improve this year?

A: Having L.J. Smith healthy is a good start. We need to be more productive in the Red Zone and that's a part of the field where the tight end is crucial. When L.J. was hurt last year we seemed to get away from that too much.

He goes on to talk about DeSean Jackson and his ability to change a game by helping the Birds start drives with much better field position.

What I want to know is, if Donovan is teaming up with a health care company to preach healthy lifestyles, do you think they can help number five stay on the field for an entire season?

Garrett Reid Pleads Guilty to Smuggling Drugs Into His Jail Cell

Back in November we told you about Garrett Reid, son of Eagles coach Andy Reid, allegedly smuggling pills into his jail cell in his rectum. It was later reported that Garrett was going to plead not guilty to these charges. But today, as part of a plea agreement, Reid owned up to the charges.

Garrett Reid pleaded guilty today to smuggling drugs into the Montgomery County Jail. Sentencing was deferred.

Reid was ordered to undergo evaluation to determine if he is eligible for a two-year program that combines incarceration and drug treatment. He currently remains in the Montgomery County Jail.

Andy and his wife Tammy were present in the court room on Wednesday but neither commented. I'm sure the Reid's can't wait to put this drama behind them and out of the media spotlight.

In unrelated news, Andy Reid wasn't too happy with the media after this week's mini camp and blamed them for always looking for the negative. The Trenton Times always grumpy Mark Eckel chirped back with a "positive" take on the Eagles mini camp.

It all stemmed from the ongoing Lito Sheppard drama which has yet to work itself out. As of now, Lito is an Eagles corner back.

Eagles Report to Mini Camp, Lito Included

After last weekend's draft buzz football fans everywhere turn their pigskin addiction to news like who did and did not report to mini camp. The Philadelphia Eagles start their first mini camp tomorrow at their NovaCare Complex in South Philly and somewhat surprisingly all of the Eagles were present or had a legit excuse.

The biggest question coming in to the mini camp was whether or not the much talked about Lito Sheppard would show up. Despite the rumors swirling around potential trades involving the corner and Lito's unhappiness with his current contract, Lito reported on time.

Also reporting just before the official report time was stud running back Brian Westbrook who is also fairly unhappy with his current deal -- perhaps rightly so.

One noticeable name who did not report on Friday was star quarterback Donovan McNabb. Is McNabb unhappy with his 12 year, 100+ million dollar contract? Nope. Donovan was excused for a good reason. He is in Chicago being honored by his high school and is scheduled to be back at camp on Saturday.

In other camp related goodness, the new additions to the roster received jersey numbers.

Marvin Harrison Accused in Shooting

Anthony Gargano of WIP radio in Philadelphia is reporting on ESPN that Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison is accused of being involved in a recent shooting at a bar Harrison owns in his home town of Philadelphia.

According to Gargano, police have uncovered a gun registered to Harrison in connection with the incident. Gargano reports that a fistfight broke out when Harrison escorted a man out of his bar, called Playmakers. When the man fled, gunfire was exchanged. The man's car was struck by a bullet and his hand was grazed, and a young girl suffered a minor injury when broken glass hit her, Gargano reported.

Neither Harrison nor anyone else has been arrested in connection with the incident. Gargano reports that police are awaiting witnesses coming forward, but that one witness is prepared to testify that Harrison was the shooter.

Harrison is generally known as a quiet, reserved person who does not get involved in off-field trouble.

YouTube Helped New Philadelphia Eagles Defensive End Andy Studebaker Get Drafted

This video of Wheaton College defensive end Andy Studebaker is one of several you can find of him on YouTube.

Of course, you can find videos of just about every football player on YouTube. But in Studebaker's case, he may owe his NFL career to online videos.

After drafting Studebaker in the sixth round on Sunday, Eagles general manager Tom Heckert said this:

"Nobody ever heard of this kid, but then his workout started popping up on YouTube and next thing you know, he got super hot and everybody (in the NFL) is looking at him. If it wasn't for YouTube, he probably wouldn't have been drafted."

I'm not completely sure I buy that -- NFL teams do have rather sophisticated video departments, but YouTube sure seems to have helped.

Philadelphia Eagles Sue Terrell Owens Over Unpaid Bonus Money

The Philadelphia Eagles filed a lawsuit to recoup money owed to them by former receiver Terrell Owens. Earlier this year, FanHouser Enrico Campitelli Jr told us that an arbitrator ruled Owens still owed nearly $800,000 to the team and that the Eagles were looking for it.

The suit for nearly $770,000 was filed in U.S. District Court on Monday. Owens lost in arbitration earlier this year, a ruling calling him to repay $1.7 million in bonuses the team paid him when he played in Philadelphia in 2004 and '05.

Those two crazy kids just can't get enough of each other, can they? I'm sure that both would love nothing more than to distance themselves as much as possible, but an arbitator ruled that some cheese still needs to change hands for that to happen.

The Cowboys (Owens currently team) and Eagles will next meet in Week 2 in Dallas ... a nationally televised game on Monday Night.

Eagles Fail to Add Impact Player in 1st Round

So the 2008 draft is now in the past and it once again left the Eagles without a first round selection. Andy Reid's decision to trade out of the first round may in fact prove to be a wiser move than taking the best player who was available on the board at 19. Regardless, it still doesn't leave most fans happy now.

That said, I'd rather be happy in early February than the end of April.

Reid hinted at the fact that they were trying to move up in the first because they had someone targeted but were unable to do so. Once they couldn't get their guy they resorted to trading backwards. I realize the numerous midlevel picks are key to a franchise's success but they still do not excite or add an immediate impact player.

I like the DT from Notre Dame and am excited about Jackson's return ability but is that all an 8-8 team really needed? Has the market really dried up for Lito?

Things don't seem incredibly optimistic with the Birds lately.

This draft could end up being fine (or even really good) in the long run but it certainly isn't a "win now" draft. Eagles fans ranging from Ray Diddy to my drunk friend Sid aren't happy with the moves.

Did Andy and his boys outsmart the competition or simply themselves?

Eagles Add Trevor Laws and DeSean Jackson in Day of Maneuvering

It was another long day of waiting for Eagles fans to hear the name of a player that will eventually wear Eagles green. The Eagles decided to trade out of the first round for the second consecutive year and later traded back yet again swapping second rounders with the Vikings.

When it was all said and done, as of 8:15 Saturday evening, the Eagles came away with Trevor Laws out of Notre Dame and DeSean Jackson out of Cal.

Laws is best known as being an energizing player who is exactly the kind of guy who could win favor with Andy Reid. Jackson is known as a confident guy who is at times a bit arrogant. The biggest part of either players game that could be instantly felt on this Eagles team is Jackson's return ability. No longer will we have to settle for Reno Mahe or Greg Lewis. Thankfully.

The Birds still have a plethora of picks on day two, so look for even more maneuvering on Sunday.

Eagles Trade 19th Overall Pick to Carolina for 3 Picks Including a 2009 First Rounder

The Eagles traded out of the first round last year and appear to have done it again today. They gave the 19th overall selection to the Carolina Panthers in exchage for the Panthers second rounder (43rd overall), fourth rounder (109th overall), and a first round choice in the 2009 draft.

With a number of attractive players on the board such as OT Jeff Otah or WR Devin Thomas, the Eagles decided the package Carolina gave them to be a better option.

The Eagles now have twelve picks in this year's draft and I wouldn't be surprised if they do some maneuvering to get back into the first round.

It remains to be seen how the Birds 2008 draft will unfold but this early trade seems to be a tremendous value win for the Eagles.
