The announcers mention that Peyton Manning probably thought he overthrew Clark on this play, and that's almost certainly true.

Video of Clark's catch after the jump.

And Kiper took a bit of a swipe at Mayock on Friday morning.

Although Kiper didn't mention Mayock by name, he made comments about Bears quarterback Jay Cutler's ugly game on Thursday night that were clearly intended to serve as a reminder that Mayock was Cutler's biggest supporter prior to the 2006 NFL draft.

"I was one that was, I guess, people would say negative," Kiper said. "I could just read you what I wrote back before he came out ... a guy who was over-hyped at Senior Bowl week, over-hyped at the Combine."

Everyone who follows the draft remembers that one of the sharpest disagreements Kiper and Mayock have ever had was over Cutler. Mayock called him the best quarterback in the draft and a future NFL superstar, while Kiper was significantly less enthralled with Cutler. Mayock is the one who was hyping Cutler at the Senior Bowl and the Combine.

So now that Cutler is coming off a five-interception day, it's fun for Kiper to say "I told you so."

Of course, it's less fun when you point out that Kiper's criticisms of Cutler were based mostly on Kiper's belief that Vince Young and Matt Leinart would be better NFL quarterbacks. For as bad as Cutler looked last night, he still has more passing yards in the NFL than Young and Leinart combined. So Kiper is free to gloat all he wants, but in the Mayock vs. Kiper battle over the 2006 quarterback class,Mayock comes out on top.
Mel Kiper: 'I Was Right' on Jay Cutler, Mike Mayock Was Wrong originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 19:39:00 EST . Fisher seemed surprised anybody would be angry about this, even after his 0-6 team just got humilated by the Patriots 59-0.

He gave the "apology to those I've offended" non-apology, saying he wore the jersey in honor of former Colts coach Tony Dungy who he was introducing, it was all in fun, and even with what he knows now, he would do it again. Really?

How about if he knew some Bud Adams-hating Houston Texan fans got pictures of him in the jersey and decided to do their own Photoshop fun? The video of the result is after the jump. This week the Titans are on a bye, and Fisher appeared at a Rocket Town fundraising event alongside former Colts head coach Tony Dungy. In so doing Fisher chose to make light of the Titans failure. How? By taking off his trench coat to reveal that he was wearing a Peyton Manning jersey underneath.

Seriously.

As if that weren't enough, he then said, "I just wanted to feel like a winner today."

Manning, oh by the way, recently swept into Nashville and stomped Fisher's winless Titans 31-9. I'm sure they're laughing in Indianapolis, but is this really the way to endear yourself to the local community? Even if it's at a fundraising appearance? Especially when people are already starting to question whether you deserve another season as head coach?

I think not.

Especially after your team just got beat 59-0, the worst defeat in the NFL in over thirty years.

And I don't think the people of Nashville are overreacting. Would this go over well in any city in America if the team was 0-6? Can you imagine if Jim Zorn showed up at a Washington fundraiser in an Eli Manning jersey?

Would it even go over very well if the Titans were 5-1 and had only lost to Peyton Manning?

Nope.

A joke like this is perhaps the best evidence yet that Jeff Fisher has lost touch with the average fan's frustrations over the collapse of his team. Either that or he truly feels that he's so bulletproof thanks to his relationship with owner Bud Adams that he can get away with anything.

Regardless, fan outrage is building rapidly. And this, wearing the jersey of a rival even if it is for a fundraiser, may have just been the tipping point for the Jeff Fisher era in Nashville. Look out below, Jeff, at least you've got that Manning jersey to cushion your fall.
The rookie appeared to score a 61-yard touchdown, receiving a bomb from Donovan McNabb. Of course, as replays showed, the play was eventually ruled down at the one yard-line due to Jackson flipping the ball backward in order to begin his celebration.

Sunday, it looks like Johnny Knox -- also a rookie, which isn't entirely a coincidence -- nearly made the same blunder. Watch the video after the jump, and pay particular attention to when Knox releases the ball around the goal line.

Now, it's awfully tough to see exactly where the ball comes out from this Zapruder-like production, but it looks like a coach's challenge from the Lions may have been worthwhile. Even if Knox did hold the ball until a half-yard into the end zone, what's the rush? Hold onto the ball five yards deep before celebrating the big play. There's no reason to put your team at risk like that, especially in such a game-altering play (it broke a 21-all tie and set the tone for a big Bears second half).

I do believe Knox held the ball long enough, but it was really close. Let's hope Knox sees this and also learns a lesson from what happened to Jackson last season, and that no more chances like this are taken again.

In the second quarter of Sunday night's Giants-Cowboys tilt, Kenny Phillips came through with one of the more insane interceptions you'll ever see in your life. As you can see on the replay (which is below), Tony Romo's pass is behind Jason Witten. After contacting Witten's hand, the ball went directly off his heel and into the arms of Phillips, who took the ball to the house.

The on-field ruling was incomplete, so the touchdown wasn't allowed. After booth review, though, the Giants were properly rewarded the football. Check out the video of this play after the jump.

Pretty cool, huh? Click here for a lesser quality picture, but a highlight that more clearly shows the ball hitting Witten's foot. You gotta give extra kudos to Phillips for having the presence of mind and the ability to realize the ball was still live. Of course, players grab dead balls and start running all the time, so it's entirely possible he had no idea what happened and just took off with the ball in a sell-job. Regardless, he's now one interception richer.

Ever since he threw 42* interceptions against the Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs last year, he's been scrutinized, particularly because he signed a new monster extension (even if it was for salary cap purposes).

And then, last week, he laid a total egg against the Eagles, essentially spotting Philly 21 points en route to an embarrassing opening week loss. Turns out, while that game was going on, Steve Smith was "joking" with JakeSixPicks on the sideline, stating, "I never really liked you as a quarterback. But as a person . . . I love you as a person." Prefer video proof? Fine!

Now, obviously Smith was joking -- after all, he said it to Jake's face. But Florio makes a pretty good point ... what if he's not joking about this? That's entirely possible, right? I mean, I constantly disguise insults at people I don't care for by wrapping them in sarcasm and humor, so why can't Smith? Personally, I think he really was kidding; he's worked with Delhomme too long -- and knows the Panthers' QB situation all too well -- to bother trying to start some unwarranted in-team turmoil. It would make about as much sense as randomly punching someone in the face.

*Approximate, based on what it felt like sitting at the game
Steve Smith 'Jokes' Jake Delhomme: 'I Never Really Liked You as a Quarterback' originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Thu, 17 Sep 2009 09:45:00 EST . And in a visit to the Nueva Esperanza Academy in Philadelphia on Tuesday as part of those efforts, Vick said he grew up around dog fighting and didn't realize there was anything wrong with it.

"It was a cultural norm in the neighborhood at the time," Vick said. "... I really didn't think what I was doing was wrong at the time because I'd seen so many other people doing it, I thought it was right. Knew it was wrong to a certain degree, but I thought I was doing the right thing."

Vick has previously indicated that he was exposed to dog fighting often in his childhood, and that as a result of that exposure to it he didn't give much thought to whether it was immoral or unethical.

Still, it's a little hard to swallow Vick saying he thought he was doing the right thing. Vick did, after all, go to great lengths to cover up his involvement in dog fighting, and he didn't acknowledge it until three of his buddies pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against him. Those aren't the actions of someone who thinks he's doing the right thing.
Michael Vick: 'I Really Didn't Think What I Was Doing Was Wrong' originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 18:32:00 EST . He finished the game 13-of-18 passing for 142 yards and a touchdown, but the play that's going to get the most attention and scrutiny isn't one of his passes, but a dangerous crackback block he threw at Texans safety Eugene Wilson with 4:50 to play in the third quarter.

Favre began the play lined up at wide receiver as the Vikings attempted to run out of the 'Wildcat' formation with first-round pick Percy Harvin stationed at quarterback in the shotgun. As Harvin carried the ball around the left end, Favre came in low at Wilson.

The ESPN announcing crew was, obviously, less than pleased with Favre's blocking style, and for good reason. Wilson limped off the field while Favre was issued a 15-yard personal foul penalty for an illegal crackback block. He should also be expecting quite a fine as well. Could you imagine the uproar if a Hines Ward or Rodney Harrison, or a player with any type of reputation around the league, was guilty of such a foul? A player or coach gets asked a routine question about how the game went, and the player or coach responds with a cliche answer about how "it's a process and we're just working to get better every day because our ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl."

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Fortunately, for those of us that enjoy a good coaching meltdown, Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache has found a way to liven up his interviews.

Following the Redskins' 27-24 loss to the New England Patriots on Friday night, Blache made his weekly appearance on Comcast Sportsnet's post-game show and was asked a fairly routine question about the performance of his defensive line. What followed was an incredibly awkward exchange that included Blache turning the tables on host Trevor Matich, asking him what he thought of the defensive line, and then complaining about how the pass rush is the only thing he ever gets asked about.

Unless there's some sort of history between these two, that seems like quite an overreaction to a seemingly innocent -- and given the performance of the Redskins' defensive line, perfectly legitimate -- question. The Redskins finished the 2008 season with just 24 sacks (29th in the NFL) and had just been carved up by Tom Brady and the Patriots' first-team offense to the tune of 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half.

Dan Steinberg of the DC Sports Bog breaks down the entire exchange, and one of the comments left by a reader hits the nail right on the head, I think: "He'll stop getting the same question when the pass rush actually produces some sacks or turnovers..."

Regularly. ... Yeah. I blew every day. I blew every day. You know, I was doing something wrong. You can't smoke in the league, so I was wrong."

Video of the interview is after the jump.

Rogers seems to suggest in the interview that prescription pills he took to deal with pain after he broke his collarbone for the second time were an even bigger problem. As a Lion, Rogers served a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, and he has been in drug-related trouble with the law since his playing career ended as well. Rogers was scrutinized by NFL teams even before he was drafted after he reportedly tested positive for a masking agent at the NFL scouting combine.

But that didn't stop Lions President Matt Millen from using the second pick in the draft on Rogers, who had starred at Michigan State. Millen appears in the interview, too, saying that he noticed something different with Rogers, and implying that drugs were the reason.

"He was average," Millen said. "Something clearly was wrong. He looked like a different guy."

For Millen to describe Rogers as "average" is yet another example of the former Lions front office boss sugarcoating his tenure with the team: Rogers, who caught only 36 passes in his career, was far below average.

But Millen's comments aside, this short excerpt of Hill's profile is an interesting look at why Rogers became one of the biggest busts in NFL history. The full profile, which will air on the August 16 Outside the Lines, will be worth watching.

Follow the NFL?
