The Rock Hill Herald's Darin Gantt had to take time out from his Fourth of July preparations to shoot down the rumor, because, no matter where Favre may or may not want to play in 2008, Carolina is very happy with their current quarterback, Jake Delhomme.

And yesterday, we heard from pithy Panthers general manager Marty Hurney: "I don't know where these things come from." This motivated PFT's Mike Florio to give an impromptu lesson in child development:
Well, Marty, here's how it works. Human beings have vocal cords. At a point roughly between 18 and 30 months of age, human beings begin using their vocal cords to articulate words. By the time we reach adulthood, we use them all the freakin' time.

In this case, "these things" came from Cook using those vocal cords to talk to other people about Favre's desire to play for the Panthers.
So there you have it.

I'm pretty sure Hurney understands how these things work. That he chose not to comment on them hardly seems surprising since, you know, honesty is the best policy except when you're an NFL general manager. Either way, whatever Hurney knows doesn't change the fact that Delhomme's still the Panthers' starting quarterback.
Panthers GM on Favre-to-Carolina Rumors: 'I Don't Know Where These Things Come From' originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sun, 06 Jul 2008 10:59:00 EST . Not so much among the 32 NFL franchises and Aaron Rodgers, but the newspapers that cover each of these teams (and, of course, the blogs that follow the newspapers that cover these teams).

Earlier today, I mentioned that the Dolphins should Just Say No to Favre, even though, to my knowledge, there has never been any discussion about the future Hall of Famer heading to South Beach. But, then again, I thought Randy Moss would catch 10 passes last season in New England.

In addition to the Dolphins, writers from papers that cover two of Green Bay's NFC North division rivals have also gotten in on the mix. Yep, the Bears and Vikings are both teams in need of a 38-year-old wily veteran who just doesn't know what it means to quit. Ever.

First, Rick Morrissey of the Chicago Tribune:
If the Bears believe they're a quarterback away from competing for the division title, they should [try to get Favre].

If the Packers are crazy enough to let Favre go, let them. And let Favre enjoy extracting his revenge. Now what city would offer the most in the way of payback?
Well, the first eight words pretty much render the rest of Morrissey's point moot. Yes, the Bears need a quarterback, but they need a proven running back, some stability along the offensive line and a couple receivers, too. That said, it would kill Packers fans if Favre made his comeback in Chicago and then proceeded to stick it Green Bay twice a year.

And then there's the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Tom Powers:
...Your very own Minnesota Vikings are the perfect fit for Brett Favre, who would want to win immediately. No other team comes close, except the Packers, and they don't want him.

Imagine, the Vikings really would be Super Bowl favorites. Plus, Tarvaris Jackson could learn from the best for a year or two. And Zygi Wilf could rev up the bulldozers. He would be the area's man of the year for working so diligently toward bringing a championship to Minnesota.
Ah, yes, the "Tarvaris Jackson could learn by watching ... again" theory to winning football. I suppose if you're going to send him to the bench without a chance to lose the job, Favre's as good a reason as any. Until he has one of those four-pick performances, anyway.

And if you're wondering, Matt Millen, president of the other NFC North team, Detroit, said the Lions are only interested in Favre if he's willing to move to wide receiver.
Every NFL Team Except the Packers Is Interested in Brett Favre originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Fri, 04 Jul 2008 19:28:00 EST . The league itself might want to heed that lesson a little bit, as well.

The league has taken a sorta progressive stance compared to other leagues on offering online video (although a package to watch games online might, you know, be a good idea), but they recently got caught with their guard down. NFL.com streamed the live NFL Network feed of Michael Strahan's retirement press conference on June 9th and then ... forgot to close the feed.

The result: some tubes nerd discovered that by visiting the URL for the Strahan conference, he/she could watch the NFL Network, for free, in glorious real time. Rampant message-boarding ensued. The stream remained for almost an entire month, until it was shut down yesterday. The error is significant, given the vigilance the league usually maintains over its content online, the NFL Network's treatment by the league as a precious commodity, and its struggles with cable over distribution. It also came at a bad time as each side continues to fight for leverage, with the NFL already losing more and more everyday.

I was tipped off to this a couple of weeks ago but kept quiet here because <strike>my market is sans-NFLN and I was enjoying the taste while it lasted</strike> I wanted to see how long before the league caught on on its own. With it no longer, I contacted the league for a response and it seemed they were still a little confused by it all. They did tell me, however, that they didn't think that the bootlegging was widespread (Google disagrees) and that they hope we "enjoyed the NFL Network freeview." Thank you, we did. I love stickin' it to the man.
Take Back the Television: NFL Blunders with its Precious Network originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 12:46:00 EST . A rose by any other name and all that. So far, it hasn't happened, and as part of the new-and-improved him, "Adam" has decided to take another nickname. A symbol of his rebirth and whatnot.

He told the media last week that "Pacman" was out because "It's really just a lot of negativity behind it. It's time for a change." Which, obviously, is why, from this day forth, he will be known as Dig Dug. No, really:
"Pacman is a straight up p---- game compared to Dig Dug," said Jones. "Pacman just eats stuff. In Dig Dug you could blow people up or crush them with a rock. That's totally how I roll." ...

"People are doubting me, so I have to come stronger and harder than ever," said Jones. "I don't need people saying I'm some small, little yellow guy or cracking on me calling me 'Ms. Pacman.' No way. I mean, notice there was never any 'Ms. Dig Dug.' That's because Dig Dug would drop a rock on a b----."
Dig Dug makes a good point. And he seemingly gets the message that this could be his last stop before prison unless he changes. If part of that makeover includes a new nickname, I'm all for it. And Cowboys owner Jerry Jones agrees, apparently.

"This is a fine young man who made a few mistakes," Jones said. "And we are simply allowing him a chance to prove himself. I expect nothing but the best behavior from Dig Douglas."

But part of me wonders if Jones was too hasty to jump on the Dig Dug bandwagon. I mean, he could've gone with any number of other, more menacing 80s video games:

Double Dragon Jones

Asteroids Jones

Donkey Kong Jones

Galaga Jones

Missile Command Jones

I'm guessing you see the pattern here: any 80s video game + Jones = potentially awesome new nickname. While I applaud Jones for wanting a fresh start, no way is Dig Dug more bad-ass than Rush'n Attack. Seriously, nobody questions Rush'n Attack Jones for asking for his "makin' it rain" money back. Rush'n Attack Jones doesn't have to wait in line for his ride after a night at the club. And NOBODY steals Rush'n Attack Jones' wallet.

Still, Dig Douglas appears set on his new moniker:
"I don't know how many more chances I'll get," he said. "You can only hit the reset button so many times before all of your accomplishments are tainted. Dig Dug taught me that. And now the whole league is about to be taught that you don't f-k with Dig Dug Jones. And that goes for everyone - wide receivers, quarterbacks, red, glasses-wearing tomato-looking things, even fire-breathing green dragons. Dig Dug will mess you up."
Let's see: Dig Dug Jones inflates Pookas and Fygars and drops rocks; Rush'n Attack Jones wields flamethrowers, RPGs and hand grenades. It's a not even close.
Player Formerly Known as Pacman Takes New Nickname, Wants to Be Called Dig Dug Jones originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 21:10:00 EST . From the post:

InBev has a very different philosophy about marketing, one which should make owners of professional sports franchises and athletic directors of U.S. colleges and universities quickly start campaigns to keep A-B an independent company. InBev's philosophy is to use those dollars to market based on price. It does not believe in spending ad dollars in a way that drowns out your competitor. As a result, it is not a major sports sponsor nor is its advertising budget more than a fraction of that spent by A-B.

Although none of the sports leagues have said anything publicly about this deal, you can bet that behind the scenes, they're nervous about losing one of their biggest cash cows.
Anheuser-Busch Sale Could Prove Costly to American Sports Leagues, Networks originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Mon, 16 Jun 2008 15:29:00 EST . >

Getting busted for DUI by a cop on a bicycle sounds like the perfect end to a perfect evening. As MDS noted yesterday, New Mexico was arrested and charged with driving drunk after leaving a club with his girlfriend/model Delicia Cordon. The Daily Press has the moving pictures to prove it.

Perhaps the most amazing thing in all this is that when Mr. Investigative Reporter went to Marcus Vick's house the day after the arrest (shockingly, Vick didn't answer), we learn that he lives in a mansion (roughly 2:00 into the video).

I remember hearing rumors that Ron Mexico gave his younger brother $1 million as a birthday gift a few years ago, but I figured it was just the internets run amok. Maybe not. Unless, of course, guys recently out of college with no job prospects can afford such luxurious living as a former NFL practice-squad player.

With Cedric Benson's release in Chicago earlier this week, he's putting a full court press on the Bears to try and move to the front of the line of potential free agent replacements.

Jones's agent called the Bears before Benson was released but after his second arrest and Jones himself picked up the phone and called his old chum Tommie Harris yesterday. Harris agreed to pass his interest along to the coaching staff and Jones turned his PR work to the Chicago Tribune.

"Chicago would be the perfect situation. I'm familiar with the division. The Bears, they know what I have. I've made plays against them. I made plays against other teams in the league. Chicago would just be perfect. And I hope they know it would be perfect too."

Jones should be one of the first players the Bears consider. Despite a checkered history with the Lions, he's young enough and talented enough to add something to the team's offense. His receiving skills, in particular, would make him a good complement for Matt Forte. The rookie could concentrate on simpler tasks while working his way into the league and Jones could be a useful pair of hands for a team that's lacking at receiver.
Kevin Jones Reaches Out and Touches the Chicago Bears originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Thu, 12 Jun 2008 09:55:00 EST . And with none of the other 31 NFL teams immediately showing interest in his services, he could be doing a lot of mulling in the coming weeks and months.

Not to worry, though; Bodog.com is taking bets on whether Benson returns to the league, and not only that, which teams are are most likely to sign him (via Hashmarks):
Will Benson play in the NFL this season?
Yes -300
No +225

What team will Benson play for?
New England 2/1
Arizona 5/1
Denver 4/1
New Orleans 10/1
New York Jets 16/1
Cleveland 12/1
San Diego 18/1
Well, I suppose the Patriots make sense if for no other reason than they routinely take fliers on players who have seemingly lost their way. The most obvious example is Corey Dillon; the difference, of course, is that Dillon was still very good when the Bengals sent him to New England in a trade. I'm not sure Benson will ever be confused for a "very good" running back, at least in the NFL.

Whatever happens, no one can wrest the Biggest Draft Bust, Class of '05 title away from him. But seriously, that's probably the biggest thing I had to overcome - my satisfaction of just having cars."

Famously, in April 2007, an internet video surfaced showing Williams driving his orange Lamborghini at a high rate of speed with a screeching female friend filming part of it. Williams apologized for his lack of judgment, making no excuses or blaming the internet.

The Mario Williams racing video was pulled off the interwebs (though you can still see video of Williams slowing driving his orange Lambo here). Instead of the racing video, above is a YouTube posted at the end of last season that the narrator says is one of Williams' cars. As I am not car obsessed, I have no idea what it is but am curious. A YouTube commenter says it is worth $500,000.

Can anyone tell me what kind of car that is, or how a 6'7" guy can fit into that?

Confessing about your car addiction sounds like a joke, but I guess that can be a problem you face if you love cars and are suddenly given a $54 million dollar contract. Personally, I'd be willing to risk it.

In my life, when bad things have happened to me, I try to figure out ways how I can try to make those bad things turn into being good things. Perhaps the embarrassing internet video was the wakeup call he needed to tell him he should pay more attention to his football career than his love of fine automobiles.

Or maybe his accountant talked to him or something.

I wonder if he obsesses about guns the way he did about cars. This New York Times article from the end of last season compares his love of cars to his love of guns:

Williams said that includes his passion for shooting guns, which, he says, he tries to do "every chance I get."

He said he owns 10 guns, including a .50-caliber Browning machine gun rifle, a Desert Eagle pistol and AR-10 and AR-15 rifles.

Ryan Reichert, the director of security for the Texans, said Williams's guns were legal and that he was licensed to carry a concealed weapon in Texas.

"I'm from the country, man, I'm big on that," Williams said of his interest in guns.

Williams's mother, Mary, who owns 13 guns herself, 5 of which are handguns, said she first taught her son to shoot when he was 8. She said her son handled guns responsibly.

In the article, his mom realizes the image problems that car and gun collecting have (without mentioning his pitbull ownership) and worries that people might get the wrong impression of her son.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak repeatedly praised Williams preparation and fitness last season, and all reports from the offseason suggest that Williams is in unstoppable shape. Kubiak can never preach enough about how players need to learn to "prepare like a pro," and maybe Williams acknowledging publicly about how his car obsession got out of hand is a way to say that he is understanding priorities better.

The most sports-relevant thing in that article to Texans fans (and their opponents) is Williams talking about the sorts of preparation he is doing. Williams has always had tremendous physical size and abilities, and if he is combining that with learning his craft better and focusing more on football, that could result in some amazing results if he remains healthy.

Okay, so who is going to be the first one to tell me what kind of car that is in the video?

Previously at FanHouse:

Mario Williams Runs Fast, Drives His Lamborghini Slow
Video of Mario Williams Racing His Lamborghini?
Mario Williams on Lamborghini Video: 'It Was Stupid.'
How Shaq Fits into a Lamborghini
Which probably suggest that training camp is overrated for veterans, particularly those destined for the Hall of Fame.

Now that the Giants are Super Bowl champs, Strahan, the NFL player, has pretty much accomplished everything. And given the lucrative off-the-field offers, he could decide to retire. Last month, Strahan admitted that he "pretty much knows" what he's going to do, but isn't in any hurry to spill the beans.

Luckily, we have ESPN's John Clayton for that:
Though no decision is expected soon, most people believe Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will retire before the start of training camp. He has numerous broadcasting opportunities. Unless the Giants take his salary to $8 million -- and they won't go that high -- Strahan will probably hang it up. He's scheduled to make $4 million this season.
The Giants certainly know the situation, which has everything to do with signing Renaldo Wynn earlier this week. Wynn's just a backup, and nobody's suggesting he'll replace Strahan; that's what Mathias Kiwanuka is for.

The team's 2006 first-round pick missed parts of last season with a broken leg, but he's now healthy. He moved from defense end to linebacker last season, and if Strahan does in fact seek fame and fortune on the teevees, Kiwanuka will be back at defensive end in '08. There are worse ways to replace a guy headed for Canton.
John Clayton Thinks Michael Strahan Will Retire Before Training Camp originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sat, 07 Jun 2008 10:28:00 EST . Coach Gary Kubiak's five year contract expires after the 2010 season, and he is line for an extension if the team keeps progressing. (A good HoustonTexans.com video discussing the move is above).

Smith, the youngest GM in the league is an illustration of how often careers are built with luck and making your own luck. This is what Kubiak had to say about Smith's start in the league:

I'll tell you how Rick was hired: We were in Denver, we were going to camp, and we were looking for a defensive assistant to come in and help the defensive staff. We didn't have a guy, and we were sitting in the staff meeting, and our running back coach raises his hand. He said, 'I've got a great kid that's on his way to TCU right now. He's going there to work there as a (graduate assistant).' And Mike (Shanahan) said, 'Can you catch him halfway and tell him to come to Colorado? We'll hire him.'

So far, the general consensus of the Texans blogosphere is that folks are happy with the partnership of Smith with Kubiak. The Texans-focused BattleRedBlog conflates their name into the word "Smithiak." Why wouldn't they be pleased with the duo?

Since Smith and Kubiak have been running the team, the Texans have improved each year, from the 2-14 that resulted in their hiring to 6-10 in 2006, and 8-8 in 2007. For me, those records are particularly impressive given that 6-10 came with David Carr as quarterback, nobodies in the running game and an extremely young defense. Last year's 8-8 came despite losing their starting quarterback, running back, center and best wide receiver and cornerback for large portions of the season.

You get a sense of plan watching Smith and Kubiak work together in building the team. This isn't to say that everything they tried has worked, but you get a better sense of why decisions were made in certain ways.

If you watch the video above and listen to what owner Bob McNair says in valuing what Smith does, I believe part of it is a response to the troubles in the start of the franchise. Charlie Casserly was hired as GM, and Dom Capers was hired as head coach. They hadn't worked together previously, and it showed when they were often not on the same page as far as player acquisitions.

Rumors suggested that some drafted players weren't developed because they were Casserly picks and not Capers picks. Free agents were chosen that made you scratch your head some to see how they would fit on the team.

For what its worth, I've been told by someone close to the organization that Casserly did not work closely with assistant coaches on what they needed in players, and that this was something that ended up frustrating McNair. He wanted a better explanation of why a GM wouldn't consult more closely with the assistants other than "see...that's how they do it in the NFL...see."

McNair would never say such a thing publicly because like most good businessmen, he believes in letting people leave the organization with some dignity intact. How you treat your former employees says a lot to the employees who remain. However, if you listen carefully to what McNair says in the video, much of the praise of Smith, I believe based on what I've heard, is a reaction to some poor experiences he had with Casserly.

McNair has always expressed admiration for the Pittsburgh Steeler organization, and by giving Smith this extension, he is signaling that he wants to maintain stability in the organization.
Houston GM Rick Smith Gets a Contract Extension, Banishes Ghost of Casserly originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Wed, 04 Jun 2008 17:48:00 EST . That wasn't the case four months and two days ago, hours before arguably the greatest catch in Super Bowl history happened, but such moments can change your life overnight.

Now, with training camp two months off, there's a chance everybody will know David Tyree, ex-Giant. At least according to The Record's Vinny Ditrani.
... [A]s bizarre as it may appear, [Tyree] could be scuffling to make the team this summer - if his knee allows him to scuffle at all. ...

when the team took the field ... Tuesday, a host of young receivers lined up behind veteran Amani Toomer ... Steve Smith, whose late-season contributions were key in the title run; Domenik Hixon, the kick returner whose receiving potential remains untapped; Sinorice Moss, the so-far disappointing second-round pick in 2006; and third-round draft pick Mario Manningham all have legitimate shots at making the team.
It certainly seems less dire than that. I don't know of a team that keeps seven wide receivers on the roster, so if the depth chart is Plaxico Burress, Toomer, Hixon, Smith, Moss and Manningham, then, yeah, Tyree could be in trouble. But I'm not convinced Manningham is better than Tyree right now, and Moss has struggled to stay healthy since the Giants drafted him a few years ago. And most important, perhaps, Tom Coughlin is a big fan of Tyree's work ethic and attention to detail. That should count for something, I'd think.

Worst case, Tyree becomes the modern-day Timmy Smith, but with a much bigger Super Bowl ring.
I Find It Very Hard to Believe That David Tyree Might Not Be With the Giants in 2008 originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Wed, 04 Jun 2008 07:48:00 EST . Perhaps more interestingly, Taylor says he won't retire even though the Miami Herald speculated he would do just that if he remained in Miami this season.
"I'm playing ball in '08. If (a trade) doesn't work out then I'm a Miami Dolphin. I love this place ... This is not about Jason Taylor. I'm just a guy. ... This is about the Miami Dolphins, which are so much bigger than me."

Taylor reiterated he has not demanded a trade or has told the team he will boycott training camp.
Assuming Taylor's telling the truth and he's not traded, it solves one problem: finding his replacement. There's still the issue of Bill Parcells wanting to stock the roster with "his people", not to mention get a little younger in the process. Having Taylor for one more season doesn't have to be at odds with Parcells' long-term vision, especially since he's still the defense's best player.

Training camp is still two months off, and a lot can change in that time, which leads me to believe Taylor will be elsewhere in September. Just remember: he never demanded a trade, for whatever that's worth.
Taylor Says He Hasn't Asked for a Trade, Won't Retire, and Will Be at Training Camp originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sun, 01 Jun 2008 12:38:00 EST . Originally, the thinking was that the Dolphins most accomplished dancer would ask for a trade. Seems reasonable since Taylor hasn't been participating in team activities, and he and Bill Parcells currently aren't on speaking terms.

Well, maybe not. The Palm Beach Post (via PFT) reports that Gary Wichard, Taylor's agent, says his client has no announcements planned. Apparently, the first Sunday in June just seemed like a swell time to convene the media.
"Nobody is demanding or threatening anything," Wichard said. "He's going to walk in, and whatever questions the media asks he will answer as he sees fit. This is an informal gathering. There will be no announcements."
Wait, didn't Taylor talk to the media earlier this week? You know, when he declared he was headed back to Miami to play some golf? If nothing's planned, why hold another presser during the slowest time on the NFL calendar?

Weird. I'm guessing, announcement or not, Taylor won't be with the Dolphins when the season starts. It's hard to imagine that Terrell Owens has been the World's Best Teammate this offseason while Taylor has been something less than that. It's all very disconcerting. Which is why Taylor will no doubt end up in Dallas, under the watchful eye of good Samaritan Jerry Jones.
Agent Says Jason Taylor Won't Announce Anything at Press Conference originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sun, 01 Jun 2008 12:08:00 EST . After the Bengals released him on May 19, and no other team claimed him on waivers, his career seemed to be over.

Maybe not. Thurman, who played middle linebacker during his one NFL season, was very productive. Not always in the right place, but his athleticism, many times, made up for missed assignments and blown coverages. Although some people think his best football is behind him, the list of doubters doesn't include the Raiders.

Or at least the Oakland Tribune's Jerry McDonald doesn't think it should. On Friday, Thurman's agent said he expected to have talks with "a half-dozen" teams next week, but wouldn't say which ones (my guess). McDonald gives four reasons why the team should consider Thurman, but this might be the most convincing:
Even though at 6-foot, 235 pounds, Thurman is similar in stature to Morrison and Howard, he is versatile enough to play anywhere. He played in the middle in Cincinnati, even though some consider the weak side to be the best place for him. If Thurman returns to something approximating his 2005 form at age 25, he is an upgrade whether he moves to the middle, with Morrison moving to the strong side, or plays the strong side himself.

The Raiders didn't hesitate in drafting running back Darren McFadden just because they had good running backs, so it makes no sense to pass on Thurman because you've already got two linebackers approximately the same size.
I still don't think it'll happen, but adding Thurman would go a long way in filling the void left by the league's angriest player.
Odell Thurman's NFL Career Might Not Be Over Just Yet originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sat, 31 May 2008 11:08:00 EST . Because this is Big Al's Bizarro World of Raiders football, it, like any theory given the normally tenuous circumstances, merits consideration:
[Lane] Kiffin and [JaMarcus] Russell are tied together now, and Kiffin knows it.

Why wasn't Kiffin summarily fired after he refused to resign last winter? The money he's owed is one big reason; but another, I believe, is Russell and the chance that Kiffin remains Davis' best option to refine and develop the huge young quarterback.
So basically, Kiffin is the NFL's most expensive quarterbacks coach? Sounds ludicrous on its face, but we're talking about the Dysfunctional Raiders, where nothing should be dismissed out of hand. Kawakami continues:
Kiffin has nothing to do with the defense, has been stripped of personnel involvement, and probably has to talk through the offensive plans with coordinator Greg Knapp and receivers coach James Lofton.

But Kiffin is still in charge of the QB position, the most important and expensive in the NFL universe, so Kiffin still is relevant . . . if things go well with Russell.
Which means, of course, that as soon as Russell has his "Aaron Brooks moment" -- and as a young quarterback going through the growing pains of maturing into a potential franchise player, he will -- Kiffin's job status immediately becomes even less certain (is that possible?).

Kiffin's hoping for Russell to complete 65 percent of his throws (up more than 10 percent during very limited duty a year ago), which means fewer deep passes, something that will surely make Davis grumpy.

But with the addition of Darren McFadden, the emergence of Zach Miller at tight end, and Javon Walker recovering from an acute bout of chubbiness, shorts passes and dump-offs might be the way to go. If nothing else, it -- along with the now-explosive running game -- will set up the deep ball.

On paper, anyway. More likely, Russell will have one bad game, Davis will lose his patience, and Kiffin will be unemployed. Good times.
Lane Kiffin Is the NFL's Highest-Paid Quarterbacks Coach originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 27 May 2008 19:22:00 EST . Even so, he doesn't believe he did anything wrong:

"I apologize to some of the kids if they did see it because I am trying to be a role model for them. But at the same time, I was just trying to have fun with (friends). That is the life of a quarterback, somebody of my status. I guess somebody was trying to make some money and sold the picture to the web site. But at the same time that is the life I chose to live. But it is not going to stop me from having fun. I just have to watch myself. They always want to try and get some negative pub on me. It wasn't really nothing bad. ... Everybody deserves to have a good time every once in a while during the offseason."

Seems to me the pictures were just embarrassing. He wasn't doing anything disgusting, but as Young notes, quarterbacks get extra scrutiny. In a world of picture phones, it is probably not the best judgment to be out in public drinking what appears to be tequila straight from the bottle.

And I think it also goes to the deeper issue of whether he is taking seriously the responsibilities of being an NFL quarterback.

Arguably, Vince Young got his offensive coordinator fired last year for finding it easier to throw interceptions than touchdowns. Coming off such a season where his maturity, accuracy and understanding of NFL quarterbacking was questioned, a few seasons removed from a draft where scouts had concerns about his intelligence and judgment, you would think he would go out of his way to dedicate himself to being and appearing professional.

Before the 2006 draft, Jason Whitlock had an article at ESPN Page 2 suggesting that Vince Young was not conducting himself in the manner that will lead to long term success in the NFL. At the time, I thought some of Whitlock's individual concerns Young's posse might be a little overblown, but I thought his overall point about how NFL quarterbacks achieve long term success through preparation and good judgment was a point worth saying:

"Before any NFL owner gives Young a bunch of guaranteed dollars, the general manager better make sure Young is going to hit the film room and practice field just as hard as Peyton Manning, Donovan McNabb and Tom Brady. The GM also should make sure that the head coach and offensive coordinator -- not some let's-hit-the-strip-clubs posse member -- have the ear of the quarterback.

Playing QB in The League is a different animal."

I don't want to make too much of this. It's not a particularly a newsflash when a player goes to a bar, goes to lots of bars or even looks stupid in a bar. (Though I think fans love to see this stuff, given the success of DrunkAthlete.com). But I do think the Whitlock article is worth a trip in the wayback machine to read.

The Titans have a lot of money invested in Vince Young, and if something bad happens to a franchise quarterback, it can ruin a team. This is why teams expect more from their quarterbacks than any other position on the field. Young shouldn't just apologize to children who saw that picture, he should apologize to the Titan franchise and fans for putting himself in a position where such photographs could be taken.

When Vince Young went back to UT this summer to take classes, he said, "It's not about the money and fame. It's about education."

Actually, for a well-paid NFL quarterback, it shouldn't be about money, fame or education. Unless it's really about a sense of entitlement and an excuse for a fierce baby blue party promotion poster.

Previously at FanHouse:
Vince Young: Shirtless, Swilling at a Party?
Matt Leinart, Alex Smith Pics at TheDirty.com: The Future of Sports Media?

The final straw may have been his announcement, via ESPN blog, that he was going to be in Los Angeles this weekend. The Dolphins have a minicamp starting Friday and Taylor will be in Los Angeles because "he's got some things to do there."

The Dolphins responded via head coach Tony Sparano on Wednesday.

"I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTAs. I know that Jason will not be at any minicamps. I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp. That's what we know. Jason is a player under contract with the Miami Dolphins. He knows that. Both parties are well aware of the information. That's all I'm going to say about it....I'm not going to talk about another thing about Jason."

Taylor's long maintained that he'd be ready to go when he had to be and that there was no problem between him and the Dolphins. It never seemed that way from the other side and Sparano's comments pretty much confirm that the team is done dealing with questions about his whereabouts.

Taylor's been quite clear about his desire to start laying the groundwork for his post-football career and a move from Miami to a team with a bigger, i.e. winning, profile would be a part of that.

So what happens next? The Dolphins haven't been able to find a trade partner willing to give up value commensurate with Taylor's abilities and Taylor has said that he doesn't plan to retire. The former could change as teams get more of an idea just what they have in house but teams know they're hamstrung because Taylor doesn't want to retire and, from all appearances, Bill Parcells & Co. don't want him on the team.

The other option is that this is a last-ditch effort by the team to get Taylor interested in playing football again but that seems unlikely. Both sides have been acting aggrieved, each with some justification, and things seem too far gone right now for everyone to kiss and make up.
Jason Taylor's Return to Miami Looks Less Likely With Every Passing Day originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Wed, 21 May 2008 16:45:00 EST . But suffice to say that this is going nowhere. Right now there are so many more important things than the length of players' hair that there's just no way the owners are going to decide to pick a fight with the players over this.

Previously on FanHouse:
NFL Owners Could Vote Tuesday to Ban Hair Covering Backs of Jerseys
Herm Edwards on NFL Hair Proposal: Is it a Cultural Thing? The way players wear their hair is such a trivial matter that there's just no sense in the NFL picking a fight with its players over it.

Previously on FanHouse:
Herm Edwards on NFL Hair Proposal: Is it a Cultural Thing?
