Brown had accumulated 648 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, plus a passing touchdown, and stepped in at the "quarterback" spot in Miami's Wildcat offense.

Miami may be as equipped as any team in the NFL to lose its No. 1 back and still run a consistent offense. Ricky Williams will take over as the team's starter, with guys like Ted Ginn, Jr., and rookie quarterback Pat White capable of picking up extra Wildcat duties. Still, Miami's offense puts a lot of pressure on the running back position -- behind Williams now is second-year guy Lex Hilliard, who has zero NFL carries.

But there are lots of recognizable free agents available, should Miami go that route. A look at some of the possibilities:

- Edgerrin James: At 31 years old, James doesn't look like he has much left in the tank. Arizona cut him way back in April, then Seattle did the same after James played seven games in a Seahawks uniform, rushing for 125 yards on 46 carries -- a measly 2.7 yards per carry (ypc) average. He's certainly not the James of old, and he wouldn't really fit in anywhere in the Wildcat. Still, he's got an extreme experience advantage over Hilliard or Smith, and might take a backup role in hopes of somehow reviving his career.

- T.J. Duckett: Another guy that the Seahawks decided they'd be better off without -- and another guy that doesn't really fit with the Wildcat -- Duckett could still serve a role as a short-yardage guy who spells Williams for 8-10 carries a game. He had just a 2.8 ypc mark in 16 games with Seattle last season, but did find the end zone eight times.

- Dominic Rhodes: It's a bit surprising Rhodes hasn't found a home somewhere -- though he can blame Buffalo for some of that, after the Bills signed him in the offseason, then cut him prior to September. He had 22 starts between 2006-08, including holding down the fort as Indianapolis' No. 1 back through the entire '06 year. Is he a superstar? No, and he never was, but he's a guy that you can count on for some decent stats.

- Tatum Bell/Michael Pittman: Why are they together? Because they're playing on the same UFL team, the Florida Tuskers. And both played for Denver in 2008 -- with Bell averaging almost six yards per rush, and Pittman topping four. Either guy would be a serviceable second back, with Pittman able to do some blocking as well.

- Noah Herron: Another UFL guy (New York Sentinels), Herron could be intriguing to the Dolphins because he has versatility -- and that's something extremely coveted for the Wildcat and all of head coach Tony Sparano's sets. Herron's spent time on the Steelers, Packers and Bucs, but his 2006 season in Green Bay best showed off his assets. That season, he rushed 37 times for 150 yards, while also catching 29 passes for 211 yards.

- Warrick Dunn: Longtime vet with ties to the state of Florida returning for one last hurrah? It's an extreme longshot, but Dunn's ability to run and catch might make sense.

There are a few other random names out there -- Najeh Davenport, Selvin Young and Maurice Hicks, to name a couple.

Chances are, though, that the Dolphins will try to ride it out with what they have, at least initially. Sparano said that Hilliard would get an opportunity to help ease the burden, and it's hard to argue that any of the available free agents out there are that much of an upgrade.

Hilliard is a solidly built back -- he doesn't have spectacular speed, but had a knack during his college days at Montana for picking up yards up the middle, and he graded out well as a pass-catcher prior to the 2008 draft. Miami may also give a few more carries to fullback Lousaka Polite.

None of the options behind Williams on Miami's roster are even in the same ballpark as Brown -- but, then again, neither are the free agent RBs lingering on the market.
How Might Miami Replace Ronnie Brown? originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 00:20:00 EST . Now it's being reported that LJ will sign with the Cincinnati Bengals.

That's the rumor, anyway, coming from Adam Schefter's Twitter account, where he's crediting Michael Smith with the news that Johnson is headed to Cincy for a visit and likely signing.

ESPN's Michael Smith reporting that Larry Johnson is en route to Cincinnati, and barring a breakdown, is expected to sign with Bengals.

This news comes on the heels of a Cedric Benson injury that has the AFC North-leading Bengals likely concerned about their running game. Further reports indicate that Johnson isn't expected to sign until later this evening -- presumably he's in for a visit with coach Marvin Lewis and to take a physical first.

Of course, provided that he does sign, you will immediately hear an amazing amount of overreaction from people saying "Typical Bengals front office behavior!" or something of the like. However, remember that this Bengals team has managed to turn Benson from a malcontent into a would-be Pro Bowler, keep Chris Henry in check and change the attitude of the entire franchise in just under a year.

Granted, much of that comes from winning, and if the teams starts dropping games with Johnson on the field or in the locker room, people will question the decision. But from a pure football perspective, provided they can keep LJ in check to a degree, this move makes a ton of sense.
Report: Larry Johnson Headed to Cincy originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 14:45:00 EST . Almost immediately, the Washington Redskins were a hot rumor. The shoe fit because Dan Snyder likes signing big names -- even if they are washed up has-beens -- and starting running back Clinton Portis recently went down with a concussion.

Wednesday, though, head coach Jim Zorn ruled out the possibility of the 'Skins bringing in the maligned veteran from Penn State.

Considering this is a guy who once cried because Dick Vermeil yelled at him, you have to wonder about Johnson's psyche about now. Remember, Tuesday he cleared through waivers as not one single team placed a claim on him. Of course, as with everything else that's ever "happened to" Johnson, I'm sure it's not his fault. Nothing ever is.

It's entirely possible this could be a Cedric Benson-like wake-up call for Johnson, but the circumstances are much different. Johnson turns 30 a week from Thursday, which is over the hill for running backs (just ask LaDainian Tomlinson). Benson is much younger and had never carried a full load for an entire season. Johnson had an outrageous 416-carry campaign back in 2006, which seems to have worn his body down for good (he's been either injured or unproductive since).

Someone is bound, eventually, to take a shot at the disgruntled back -- who had back-to-back 1,700-yard rushing seasons in 2005-2006 -- but it's not going to be the Redskins. They appear content to use Ladell Betts in place of Portis for the next week or two until CP26 returns.
Larry Johnson Not Going to Washington originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 14:15:00 EST .
Denver rookie head coach Josh McDaniels didn't mess around after Baltimore shredded Denver 30-7 last week -- the Broncos' first loss of the year. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco went 20 of 25 through the air in that game, and as Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post points out, 12 of 15 against Denver's nickel defense.

McDaniels said Saturday that he hopes Law can play Monday night when Denver hosts Pittsburgh.

"They're trying to get me ready to play this week in a limited fashion," Law said. "I did it last year."

Law played the last seven games of the 2008 season with the Jets. He's no longer the shutdown cornerback he once was, but he figures to slide right into Denver's nickel and dime packages, where Williams and rookie Alphonso Smith have been seeing time.

Law also adds another former New England face to Denver's roster -- McDaniels spent eight seasons as a coach with the Patriots and opted to bring in someone he's familiar with, a strategy that's been frequently used by Bill Belichick proteges around the league.

"He gives us some depth at corner. He played obviously a long time in this league. He knows how to play inside, outside and he's in good shape and ready to go," McDaniels said. "We feel like hopefully it will take us take a step forward."

Denver might need Law's veteran savvy Monday. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has pressed all week to utilize the no-huddle offense more, meaning that Pittsburgh will try to spread things out and force the Broncos into pass defense situations. We'll have to wait and see how much Law can contribute after sitting on the sidelines all season.
Broncos Sign Veteran CB Ty Law originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sat, 07 Nov 2009 12:25:00 EST . Because of their belief in the draft and the Rooney's lack of a Daniel Snyder-size bankroll, they ignore free agents and focus instead on developing their own stars.

It's only halfway true. It's fair to say that Pittsburgh won't be in the market for the top free agents on the market next year, just like they haven't gone shopping for a big-money free agent in any of the past 17 years. But Pittsburgh does go shopping in the bargain bin. And more often than not, they find deals -- like linebacker Keyaron Fox, the star of Sunday's win against the Vikings.

When Lawrence Timmons was sidelined by a high ankle sprain before the season opener, Fox stepped in and recorded 10 tackles against the Titans. He had another solid effort (five tackles) against the Bears next week before handing the starting job back to Timmons.

But when Timmons went down with another ankle injury on Sunday, Fox stepped in to provide the game's biggest play -- intercepting Brett Favre and returning it 82 yards for a touchdown -- the first interception of his career. Timmons has said he'll be back in two weeks when Pittsburgh returns from its bye week, but if he's not ready, the coaching staff and the Steelers fans have to feel quite comfortable about seeing Fox stepping in at inside linebacker.

Fox is just another example of the Steelers kind of free agent -- the inexpensive, underappreciated role player who is better than his price tag. When Fox hit free agency after the 2007 season, he didn't get a whole lot of interest. He was an oft-injured backup linebacker for the Chiefs who had made only four starts in four years, so Pittsburgh was able to sign him to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum. They liked his special teams play enough during their run to the Super Bowl to sign him to a two-year, $1.8 million contract extension that will keep him in Pittsburgh through 2010.

Fox isn't the only bargain free agent who's paid off in recent years. Mewelde Moore didn't have a whole lot of offers on the free agent market, but the third-down back has proven to be a steal with his three-year, $5 million deal. Ryan Clark was not listed as one of the top safeties when he hit the free agent market, but the free safety has proven to be one of the bargains of the decade at four years, $7 million.
Steelers' Bargain Hunting Pays Off Again originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 09:29:00 EST . Tyree, whom was cut by the Giants in September, has agreed to a deal with the Baltimore Ravens, the team announced Wednesday.

Tyree was reportedly scheduled to tryout for Tampa Bay later this week, but after a Monday workout in Baltimore, was able to come to terms with the Ravens.

Tyree played for six seasons in New York, the only prior stop in his NFL career. He has 54 career regular-season catches for 650 yards and four touchdowns.

More NFL News: Patriots Reportedly Bring Back Junior Seau

All of those numbers pale in comparison to Tyree's Super Bowl effort, of course. In the Giants' dramatic 17-14 win over New England back on Feb. 3, 2008, Tyree hauled in three catches for 43 yards and a touchdown. His acrobatic fourth-quarter grab setup New York's title-clinching touchdown and is arguably one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history.

Ironically, Tyree never caught another pass for the Giants due to a knee injury that cost him all of the 2008 season.

He may not see many passes in Baltimore, either, barring injury. In Mark Clayton, Derrick Mason and Kelley Washington, the Ravens already have a sturdy group at the wide receiver, but Tyree will add depth and experience. He also should see some work on special teams -- Baltimore lost special-teams dynamo Brandon Ayanbadejo for the year due to injury, so the door could be open for Tyree to play on the kick and punt units.
David Tyree Resurfaces in Baltimore originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST . Otherwise, Eric Mangini wouldn't keep getting jobs, especially as somebody's head coach.

What were those who run the Cleveland Browns thinking?

They weren't. Mangini was always one "something" away with the New York Jets from having somebody splatter him against the locker room wall, but it didn't matter. Nearly a week after he was fired by the Jets last December, he was zapped up by the Browns, and guess what? Several of his Cleveland players already would rather drink out of Lake Erie than spend another moment with this guy.

The list of athletes, coaches, managers and executives who continue to pop up on teams despite showing little-to-no signs of changing their previous ways of woe is long, growing and historic. That said, some on that list of folks are put out of their misery when they leave by choice or by force (Matt Millen comes to mind). It's just that most stick around (Stephen Jackson, Jim Riggleman, Manny Ramirez, Tony Romo, Dave Wannstedt), because the naive won't stop hiring them.

No way should the stunned decision makers of the Chicago Cubs have been stunned by another meltdown by Milton Bradley. What? They thought they were getting a clone of that Milton Bradley whose company invented Battleship, Twister and Yahtzee? Instead, they got the Milton Bradley who always was an explosion waiting to happen with the San Diego Padres and the Texas Rangers.

Earth to the Los Angeles Dodgers: "Manny Being Manny" means the same iconic player you fell in love with down the stretch of last season after he dogged it with the Boston Red Sox is the same ordinary (and steroids tainted) player you have now.

So the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just discovered that Byron Leftwich isn't a starting quarterback anymore? Didn't see that one coming. The Jacksonville Jaguars dumped him and his wacky delivery in September 2007 for the obscure David Garrard. Not only that, Leftwich was whacked the next year when the Atlanta Falcons also discovered that he wasn't anybody's starting quarterback of the future. He was a good backup last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but you heard correctly.

He was a good backup.

Every time John Daly loses a few pounds and has anything close to a good round, he supposedly is back, but then he evolves into P.J. Carlesimo, Isaiah Rider and all the others we should never hear from again on a major stage.

What's happening here is simple -- stupidity.

That, along with ego, as in, "They couldn't make it work with that guy, but they don't know what we know."

Plus, too many of these bosses in sports convince themselves that the Randy Moss of the New England Patriots is the rule, and that the other Randy Moss was the exception. For instance: the Randy Moss of the Patriots plays hard, keeps his mouth shot and promotes a team concept. The other Randy Moss did everything from dogging it during games and leaving games early to staging a fake mooning in front of opposing fans and abusing law or game officials.

Wait a minute. What did we just say about the Randy Moss of the Patriots? After two relatively controversy free seasons in New England , some are wondering if he really is suffering from an aching back these days.

Maybe Moss is. The problem is, who knows?

This is what we do know: if you're among those who don't mind covering your eyes, holding your nose and bringing these people to town anyway, you get what you deserve -- and that's predictable grief.

Terence Moore is a national columnist and commentator for FanHouse. So when Pittsburgh wrapped up a new extension with Brett Keisel last week, there was a general feeling that Pittsburgh was done with new deals until after the season.

But apparently Steelers' negotiator Omar Kahn was keeping busy. Jim Wexell reported that they gave kicker Jeff Reed an offer that was rejected. But that just meant that the Steelers moved on to center Justin Hartwig, who signed a four-year, $10 million extension today, just two days before the season kicks off.

What has been remarkable about Keisel's and Hartwig's deals is how reasonable they are. At a time when a franchise defensive end earns just under $9 million, Keisel signed a five-year deal for just $18 million. And at a time when starting guards and centers are getting $7 million or more per year, Hartwig just signed a four-year deal for only $3 million more.

There should be some concern over how many players on the wrong side of 30 the Steelers have locked up recently (Keisel, Hartwig, James Harrison, James Farrior and Hines Ward). But many of these deals are structured so they don't carry a big salary cap hit down the road. Hartwig could serve as a reasonably priced backup center/guard in the final years of this new deal.

What is also apparent is the Steelers value continuity over potential when it comes to the offensive line. Hartwig, Max Starks and Trai Essex are extremely unlike to earn a spot in the Pro Bowl, but they do know the Steelers system, so the hope is that some of the communication issues that plagued the Steelers in 2008 will go away this year. Hartwig won't continue the Steelers' tradition of elite centers (Mike Webster and Dermontti Dawson), but he is much better than Sean Mahan, the center he replaced.
Steelers Get Hartwig's New Deal Finished Just In Time originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 17:17:00 EST . Seattle signed 13-year veteran safety Lawyer Milloy, while Denver came to terms with defensive end Vonnie Holliday.

Terms of Milloy's deal were not immediately released, but Seattle released starting free safety Brian Russell -- a major disappointment after getting a big five-year deal in 2007 -- to make room on their roster. Milloy, 35, will need some time to get assimilated in Seattle, but he'll jump into the starting lineup once he does.

Despite his age, Milloy has been incredibly durable in his NFL career, starting every game he's played since 1997 and sitting out just five contests in that time.

Over in Denver, the Broncos found themselves shorthanded up front after Le Kevin Smith -- an addition via trade from New England this offseason -- suffered a knee injury. Holliday started 15 games, and played all 16, in Miami last season where he's been for the last four seasons.

He underwent an extended search for a new home this summer, though. Holliday did have 3 1/2 sacks last season -- and seven just three years ago -- and his Denver could slide him anywhere on the line.

"He's versatile so he can play wherever the team decides to play him," Holliday's agent, Cary Fabrikant, told the Denver Post. "He's an extremely talented player who's been a starter for long periods of time. He's familiar with the defense."

Both players are upgrades for their respective teams, even if they start out a bit down the depth chart. It's a little surprising, to be honest, that Milloy and Holliday sat around for this long. Detroit did make a run at Milloy a couple of weeks ago, but that feel through. But the Lions' loss is the Seahawks' gain -- and Denver definitely took advantage of everyone's hesitation on Holliday.
Seattle, Denver Each Add Veteran Defensive Pieces originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sat, 05 Sep 2009 18:40:00 EST . Tyree's career with the Giants did not last nearly as long. New York cut the wide receiver on Saturday, about 17 months after Tyree's postseason heroics.

"Like anyone else, it was a tough thing for David to hear. Tyree's ball-to-the-helmet grab that set up New York's title-winning touchdown was his third grab of that Super Bowl game against New England. During the entire 2007 regular season, just to put that in perspective, Tyree made four grabs. His best season came in 2006 -- 19 receptions for 197 yards and two touchdowns. He missed all of last year after suffering a training-camp knee injury.

But no matter where Tyree goes from here -- and there's probably a team out there willing to take a shot on him (Baltimore?) -- he's got his spot in football history secured.

Now, less than two weeks before the NFL season begins, Toomer's hunt will begin anew.

The Chiefs cut the 34-year-old veteran on Tuesday -- part of Kansas City's effort to get down the mandated 75-man roster limit by the close of Sept. 1 -- which could mean the end of the line for Toomer's career.

K.C. brought Toomer aboard at the start of August as the team stockpiled veteran talent -- the Chiefs signed Bobby Engram in March, and Ashley Lelie a couple of weeks after Toomer.

But with Dwayne Bowe, Terrance Copper, Devard Darling and Mark Bradley also on the roster, Kansas City was overloaded at the WR spot. Darling, for the record, was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, meaning that his season is over after he suffered an ACL injury in Kansas City's preseason game on Aug. 29.

Still, the Chiefs had enough talent around to justify Toomer's release. Bowe and Bradley now look like favorites to be in the starting lineup, while Engram, Copper and Lelie add depth.

Lelie likely won his roster spot after Darling went down on Saturday against Seattle. In that game, Lelie led the Chiefs with four catches for 52 yards. With Toomer struggling to show any burst throughout camp, Lelie's performance cemented his fate.

There are still teams out there in need of receiver help -- the usual suspects like Chicago, Baltimore, San Francisco and even Dallas come to mind. Toomer may be able to latch on somewhere before the season starts. If not, he'll probably hang it up having played all 190 of his career games as a Giant.
Amani Toomer Odd Man Out in K.C. originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 16:35:00 EST . In and of itself, this isn't terribly huge news, considering Hood was recently cut from the Cleveland Browns. The issue at hand, though, is the overall health of the Bears' secondary.

Between Charles Tillman, Nathan Vasher and Zackary Bowman, the Bears were expected to have their two starting cornerbacks and one solid backup. Instead, both Bowman and Tillman are hurt. Tillman doesn't expect to be ready for the final preseason game and he's even worried he won't be ready for the Week 1 tilt in Green Bay.

The Bears secondary has been a patchwork unit for the first three preseason games. Tillman, Bowman and Danieal Manning have missed all three games. Manning, a starting safety, will be ready to get some reps in the game Thursday night against the Browns, but it doesn't appear likely Bowman or Tillman will be ready to go just yet.

Trumaine McBride has been starting opposite Vasher in the exhibition games, but he's been pretty unimpressive. Corey Graham has spelled Vasher and done a nice job, so he'll likely remain in the mix. Expect Hood to get a look instead of McBride while both Bowman and Tillman remain sidelined with injuries. This will be his chance to curry favor with the defensive coaches, many of whom are either newcomers or in new positions.

Hood is a seventh-year veteran from Auburn. He had 5 interceptions (taking 2 for touchdowns) and 21 passes defensed in 2007 for the Cardinals, but took a step back last season in coverage. The Cardinals released him in a financial decision following the Super Bowl run. He also played in the Super Bowl for the Eagles.

Hood was unemployed for right around 24 hours, as he was released by the Browns Monday. With the move, the Bears had to release someone, and it ended up being Derek Kinder -- the rookie wideout from Pittsburgh.
Bears Add Hood to Ailing Secondary originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 14:35:00 EST . After two games, the Seahawks are 2-0 with wins over Denver and San Diego. But it's hard to get excited over that record given that the Seahawks' running game was about as effective as taking a knee.

In their first game, the Hawks' leading rusher was rookie Devin Moore with 32 yards on eight carries. Last week, quarterback Seneca Wallace led the way with 20 yards -- three other backs averaged less than 2.5 yards per rush. On top of that, projected starter Julius Jones missed the contest with a mysterious leg injury.

So with desperation close to setting in, Seattle reportedly signed veteran Edgerrin James to a one-year deal on Monday. Pro Football Talk first reported the deal.

Here's an appropriate time for the usual disclaimers you'll hear about James these days -- he's 31, already played 10 full seasons and has definitely lost a step.

He's also still arguably as good or better than any of Seattle's other backs.

The Seahawks had high hopes for Jones after bringing him in from Dallas last year, but then he put up a whopping 698 yards as their No. 1 guy and scored just twice. The James signing might hint that Jones is currently more hurt than Seattle's letting on, but even if he's not, it's debatable that the Seahawks could count on him to carry the load. Behind him is T.J. Duckett, a fantasy headache last year with eight touchdowns and just 172 total rushing yards -- he becomes a possible cut now with James in tow. At third-string is Justin Forsett, an athletic guy that has never had a carry in the NFL.

There's not exactly a Walter Payton in there.

So even though Edge isn't a big-play threat (though he never really was -- his longest career rush is 43 yards), this move, while surprising, could be a good one. Or at least an understandable one.

James won't be able to handle 30 carries a night, but he doesn't have to in Seattle. He can split carries with Jones and whoever else remains when the regular season starts, plus add sturdy blocking and a decent set of hands to the backfield. Sort of exactly what he did during a strong postseason with the Cardinals last season, while sharing time with Tim Hightower.

Beyond that, he's been on a lot of winning teams, a resume-booster that the Seahawks no doubt noticed. Oh yeah, and he gets two chances this season to stick it to Arizona for phasing him out.

Edge won't turn Seattle's rushing attack into the best in the league. He will improve it, though, even if that accomplishment doesn't seem like much at the moment.

That decision, however, isn't as clear cut as some personnel situations can be. No, like a well-written book or film that weaves a story so complex the plot's end is never obvious until it arrives, there are a few details to the Jammal Brown Situation that have fans in suspense.

Let's start with the present: Brown is currently on the shelf after having surgery Thursday for a sports hernia. It's possible he can recover on the short end of the injury's typical timeframe (three to six weeks), which would have him healthy for the season opener, but it's more likely the team plays it safe and makes sure this thing doesn't linger into the playoff race. He has yet to play 16 games in a year, this injury could push that streak to five seasons. That's certainly not a positive for a player who before he was even drafted in 2005 was dealing with a condition in his knees that had a lot of teams and medical experts predicting a short career.

In his place, Jermon Bushrod, a fourth-round pick in 2007, started at left tackle in Saturday night's preseason game against the Houston Texans, and surprisingly held his own against Mario Williams. It was obviously an encouraging sign, even with the typical preseason caveats, for a third-string tackle (Brown's backup, Zach Strief, is sidelined for time being).

A lot of teams would die for a solid starting five on the line, let alone depth that goes two or three deep especially at tackle. But the Saints have made the offensive line a focus, dedicating five picks in Sean Payton's first three years to the unit. If Bushrod's performance against Williams proves not to be a complete anomaly, he and Strief, who has played well filling in for Brown in the past, could be enough to keep the Saints from paying ridiculous money to Brown if he hits the completely open market, especially given Brown's weaknesses (inconsistency, lots of penalties, that injury thing).

That's a big if, though. Under normal circumstances, Brown would be an unrestricted free agent when his contract ends after this year. But the CBA drama dictates that if a new agreement is not reached, players will need six seasons instead of four to qualify for unrestricted free agency. Unfortunately enough for Brown, this will be his fifth season, meaning if no labor deal is reached -- and there's certainly not much to be optimistic about at this point -- Brown will only be a restricted free agent.

That would mean a huge difference money wise, as Brown would almost certainly be the best player available at a premium position. Tackles are always given outsized contracts because they're so important and scarce on the market, and a cursory look at 2010's potential free agents doesn't produce much competition for a tackle who has the age, skill, and resume personnel people would drool over. Those weaknesses wouldn't stop anyone from giving Brown a ton of money, but they're still very real concerns. It's possible that a team could even conceivably give Brown a large contract as a restricted free agent and test the Saints' bond with the former first-rounder.

If Brown becomes an unrestricted free agent, the question is do you overpay to keep a talented player with injury issues at a premium position even though you have above average depth behind him? It's never good to let talent walk, especially on the line, but there are other aspects that weigh into that decision.

But what more likely happens is that the NFL and NFLPA won't reach an agreement on time and that Brown will become a restricted free agent, making the Saints' decision much, much easier. They'll give him the highest tender possible and take the compensatory draft picks if another team wants him, which probably won't happen. They sign Brown to a palatable short-term deal (two or three years) that is a bargain compared to what he could get on the market, sparing them from potential cap trouble if Brown can't physically last a long contract, and let him walk when that deal ends.

Still, though, there's an awful lot up in the air to feel confident about that prediction at this time. For starters, Brown needs to get on the field and work on improving from a 2008 season that was his worst as a pro.
The Vexing Jammal Brown Situation originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Sun, 23 Aug 2009 14:15:00 EST . Chris Mortensen followed up a half hour later, during ESPN's broadcast of Cardinals vs. Steelers. The news has been confirmed by Joel Segal, Vick's agent.

It's a one-year deal for $1.6 million, with a team option for 2010 at $5.2 million.

According to a source close to Vick, the quarterback picked the Eagles over one other top candidate. He has to pass a physical before joining the team.

Philadelphia hosts Jacksonville on Thursday, August 27, in what would be the first game action Vick could possibly see.

Beyond that, Vick's reinstatement is on a "conditional basis," and his regular-season playing status will be determined by Week 6, if not before.

"What sort of message does this sent to young fans who care about animals and don't want to see them be harmed?" "PETA certainly hopes that Vick has truly learned his lesson and feels truly remorseful for his crimes -- but since he's given no public indication that that's the case, only time will tell."

Though this signing answers a number of questions, it brings up a litany of new ones. "It's not a matter of if, its when and Mike's excited of the opportunity the commissioner gave him and he's ready to go help a club win."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally reinstated Vick a week after he completed a 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring.

Even if an NFL team signs Vick, he's not eligible to play until the final two preseason games, yet can participate in practices and meetings. Vick will have his playing status for the regular season reviewed by Goodell by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19).

Segal said he and Vick expected a slow process, but now there's a feeling something might happen. Segal was in Redskins camp on Tuesday and ruled out the Redskins. Several other teams have said no on Vick.

Yet, Dungy said at least 12 coaches have contacted him regarding the quarterback.

"I recommended to maybe a dozen guys, I think that [Vick] has changed as a person," Dungy said Tuesday morning on ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike morning show. "I think he realizes what he did and the lifestyle he had wasn't conductive to not only playing well, but also a detriment to a lot of young people."

There is a thought that Vick might have to change from quarterback to running back. With several NFL teams using the Wildcat offense, which utilizes a quick ball handler who could also pass in certain situations, Vick has been linked to those teams.

But Segal said Vick is mainly a quarterback and doesn't expect a position change.

"Just wants to get back and run around," Segal said of Vick.
Agent: Five Teams Interested in Vick originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 16:30:00 EST . After being released this past offseason by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- with whom the 36-year-old had played his entire 14-year career -- Brooks couldn't find interest from anyone. Well, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Brooks has finally received some interest.

The Saints will bring the 11-time Pro Bowl linebacker in for a workout. Brooks still has enough ability to fulfill a need for the Saints, considering their weakness at linebacker other than Jonathan Vilma. The need became even greater when backup linebacker Mark Simoneau went down with a torn triceps muscle.

The Saints decided to give Brooks a shot in light of what head coach Sean Payton saw when studying film from last season.
"We felt like he was still playing at a high level," Payton said. "He's an intelligent player, instinctive, a guy that's really been a pain for us over the years, so we've got a lot of respect for his ability."
At this point in training camp, bringing in Brooks would be a superb move for the Saints. He's not highly sought after, so it's not like they'd have to break the proverbial bank to land his services.

In addition to the aforementioned Pro Bowl appearances, Brooks was named first-team All-NFL five times and NFL Defensive Player of the Year once during his sparkling stint in Tampa Bay. He also accrued a defensive touchdown en route to winning the Super Bowl in 2002.

We're talking about an all-time great linebacker, so anything he has left in the tank would be a plus for a defense that was dreadful last season. Plus, with his leadership and experience, he'd be like a coach on the field for many of the younger players.
Derrick Brooks to Work Out for Saints originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 15:45:00 EST . (AP) -- Michael Vick returned to the area that once celebrated his brilliant play on the football field, this time for the first of what he vows will be dozens of appearances around the country to urge low-income youths to avoid the tragic trail left by dogfighting.

Few got to hear Saturday's message, however.

Vick's visit to a suburban Atlanta community center was largely off limits to the very neighborhood it was supposed to be helping. In an agreement between Vick's handlers and the Humane Society of the United States, only 55 people and one media crew were allowed inside. An Associated Press reporter, videographer and photographer were among the media banished from the property by police.

Moore: Please, Stop The Vick Hypocrisy
Blackistone: Is NFL Unjustly Blackballing Vick?

Most people who live in the largely black neighborhood southeast of Atlanta were unaware of Vick's appearance. Several showed up after the former Falcons quarterback had already left in a black limousine.

"Not too many people knew he was going to be here," said Stan Sutton, who stopped by the New Life Community Center to pick up some clothes and wound up being one of the few invited inside to hear Vick speak. "There would have been a lot more people here than there are now. The whole Eastside would have been here."

Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society, said the group wants to be transparent and reach as many people as possible with its anti-dogfighting message. But the tightly controlled appearance comes as Vick is trying to rehabilitate his image and ease his path back to the NFL.

The quarterback is apparently planning to do his first major interview since completing a 23-month prison sentence with the CBS news magazine "60 Minutes," which sent a three-person crew to film the event. The AP was barred from entering, and the windows were covered to prevent anyone from looking inside. Eventually, police were called, and all media were forced to stand on a sidewalk in front of the complex.

"It was a controlled environment for obvious reasons: Vick is so high profile," Pacelle said. "We're going to have plenty of opportunities in the future to have Michael to speak at community-based forums."

The Humane Society did not publicize the event, going along with the media plan laid out by Vick's handlers even if it meant missing the chance to make a real impact in a community where he is still revered for his brilliant play during six years with the Falcons.

"We're giving him an opportunity to plug into our community-based forums," Pacelle said. "But he obviously has his own set of individuals who are working with him and want to present things in the way they want."

A Vick representative said the quarterback would have no comment on the appearance. Vick entered through a back door and spoke for about 12 minutes, Pacelle said. The small audience was moved by what it heard.

"He said he did wrong," 17-year-old Stanley Jones said. "Now he's trying to come up with a smarter way to help the whole community, for young people like us, to make a change."

Jones said he appreciated having Vick in an area plagued by drugs and violence.

"You usually don't see that in the 'hood. You don't see someone from the NFL," the teenager said. "When you see a big star like that, you don't have any choice but to respect them."

Jones held up a pamphlet that was given out by the Humane Society: "Dogfighting Hurts." But Vick's words had more of an impact.

"It seemed like it came from the heart," Jones said. "I heard him saying something about how he came from the same (sort of) neighborhood that we did. He said he had only one dream, and he messed up that whole dream."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has conditionally lifted Vick's ban from the league. He can participate in training camp and exhibition games, and would be eligible to return for the sixth week of the regular season if he has no further setbacks.

But Vick, the only quarterback ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, has yet to find a job. Most teams have said they have no intention of signing him, and he may be forced to go with the fledgling United Football League to demonstrate that he's still a useful player after missing the last two seasons.

"Where he goes to play football now is his decision," Goodell said Saturday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Vick didn't discuss his NFL ambitions at New Life Community Center, but it's clear he still has plenty of fans.

Asked whether Vick should get a second chance, Jones said, "I hope so. He didn't say anything about it, but I hope so."

Copyright 2009 The Associated Press. Ferguson is a seven-year veteran of the NFL, most recently with the Minnesota Vikings. He only had three receptions last season but over his career has 151 receptions and 13 touchdowns.

"We like his skill set and he's going to have an opportunity to catch up real quick." said coach Mike Smith following afternoon workouts where Ferguson made an immediate statement catching a 50-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Shockley.

Marty Booker was the second free agent signed on Thursday. Booker has ten years experience in the league as a wide receiver and had two 1,000 yard receiving seasons in 2001 and 2002. Both the addition of Booker and Ferguson add much needed veteran leadership to a young group of receivers.

To make room for Booker on the roster, the Falcons had to cut rookie free-agent receiver Brandon Godfrey.

The fourth roster move came in the form of an injury. Second-round draft pick William Moore had an arthroscopic procedure done on his left knee Thursday morning. He is expected to miss two to four weeks.

Missing two to four weeks doesn't sound bad until you consider the fact that Moore was a rookie battling Thomas DeCoud for a starting safety spot. Smith says Moore is, "gonna have to do some extra work in the classroom" while he cannot be on the field. The time missed may be too much for Moore to legitimately compete for the starting job for week one.
Plus 2, Minus 2: Wounded Falcons Make 4 Roster Moves originally appeared on NFL FanHouse on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 22:00:00 EST .
