Former Detroit Lions running back Kevin Jones, a free agent recovering from a serious knee injury, invited the entire NFL to a workout Saturday. Only four teams showed up.

Among those four teams -- the Lions, Dolphins, Packers and Steelers -- the best option might be for Jones to sign a deal to return to Detroit, assuming the Lions offer him one. In Miami, Green Bay and Pittsburgh he'd have almost no shot of rising any higher than third on the depth chart, and third-string running backs who don't play special teams don't have much job security.

In Detroit he'd at least have a shot at the starting job, although the Lions don't seem particularly interested in bringing him back -- they've even given away his jersey number.

Jones once looked like one of the league's up-and-coming young running backs, rushing for 1,133 yards and 4.7 yards a carry as a rookie. Since then he's never had even 700 yards or four yards a carry. At age 25, there's a chance that he's done.

Two weeks ago, former Dolphins wide receiver Marcus Vick was arrested with the woman whose picture you see at right, Delicia Cordon. Vick was charged with drunk driving. Cordon, an aspiring model and actress, was charged with being drunk in public.

Cordon was identified as Vick's girlfriend, but she apparently has some type of history with Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown. The web site of the Miami-Dade County Clerk's Office says that Cordon filed a lawsuit against Brown, although that suit was dismissed when Cordon failed to show up for a hearing this month.

The publicly available information doesn't make clear why Cordon was suing Brown, and as Pro Football Talk notes, it's even possible that the case involves a different Delicia Cordon or a different Ronnie Brown. The web site RipOffReport.com says Cordon was evicted from a Miami condo owned by one NFL player this year, and that she recently got "out of a really bad relationship with another player." It's not clear whether either of those players are Vick or Brown.

I think the obvious answer to that question is no. Realistically speaking, there have been far worse quarterbacks in the NFL than the piano man, I mean, there's got to be a reason guys are sitting below him on depth charts even though we're far removed from any semblance of hope that he'd live up to his draft status. But what if you take into account the whole statistical shebang, including the amount of opportunities with which to suck? That might be a different story.

Or at least that's what Pro Football Reference thinks, as they've compiled their list of worst quarterbacks in the league's history, which -- if your surname isn't Imus -- you should be smart enough to realize is headlined by Joey Harrington. The reasoning is a stew of numbers and equations (here's the method behind the madness). It's definitely worth checking out for the comprehensive perspective it takes, even if it took me three reads and the assistance of a Mensa member to understand.

That being said, I'm a firm believer in the eyeball test, and I stand by my very subjective scientific opinion that Harrington isn't the worst. There are surely a couple of inferior quarterbacks in history. There are even a couple of current quarterbacks who are worse. Hell, there are a couple of quarterbacks currently on the Chicago Bears who are worse than Harrington.

Or maybe I've just got a soft spot for someone who can tickle the ivories.

Miami Herald writer Armando Salguero posted an item on the team's NFL blog last week saying that Dolphins kicker Jay Feely's big mouth was getting him in trouble with the team. It was typical off-season NFL fare, and nothing exceptional.

But Feely took exception to it, by posting a comment on the Herald's web site. The comment began, "armando, This is jay feely." And it also included this criticism:
I think you presented a much more controversial view of the situation than I did when you interviewed me. Never did I say they told me to 'shut up' as you wrote in your article. You asked me if they asked me to not do as much media work and I said 'yes, and I was willing to do that." I also told you my approach has been to work as hard as I could, to be the best kicker I could be, and that I believed the best kicker would win the job.
Feely has confirmed it really was him who posted the comment, and I think it's great. Feely might be the next Chris Cooley.

Jason Taylor wants to leave the Miami Dolphins for a team he thinks has a shot at the Super Bowl. The Green Bay Packers are coming off a 13-3 season and are looking to improve their pass rush.

The Green Bay Press Gazette reports (via PFT) that the Packers have contacted the Dolphins about an agreement that would make Taylor a Packer. Robert Nunn, one of the Packers' defensive assistants, made clear he'd like for it to happen:
"Anytime you can get a guy of that caliber, you'd want to try to get him," said Nunn, who was with the Dolphins from 2000 to 2002. "But I don't get involved in anything like that.

"All I know is that when I coached him, he was a great football player and a great person. I hope it works out for him because he's had such a great career, and I'd hate to see it end on a bad note in the public's eye. The guy is such an outstanding individual and a great football player, and I just hope for the best for Jason and hope it ends well, and he's able to compete for a Super Bowl."
Packers coach Mike McCarthy has said he wants the defense to be more aggressive in getting after the quarterback, and adding Taylor would certainly be a good way to do that. Still, the Dolphins seem intent on getting a first- or second-round draft pick for Taylor, and that may be a higher price than the Packers will pay.

Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown was having a great season for a bad team in 2007. Through seven weeks he led the league in yards from scrimmage, and Patriots coach Bill Belichick called him the best offensive player New England had faced.

And then he tore his ACL in October, an injury that ended his season and called into question how well he could prepare for 2008. But Brown said that after participating in 11-on-11 drills this week, he knows he'll be ready to go by the time the season starts:
"It's a bigger step, a step closer to getting ready for the season and getting ready for training camp," Brown said. "The last couple of days, the knee is doing real well. I look forward to going to training camp and being able to participate in that, and we'll see how everything goes. By the time September rolls around, I feel I'll be pretty good, 100 percent and more."
I'm not sure about the "and more" part, but I do think Brown and Ricky Williams have the potential to be an effective 1-2 punch for the Dolphins. If a team coming off a 1-15 season can be said to have a "strength," running back is it for the Dolphins -- as long as Brown is healthy.

In a post on the Miami Herald's official blog last week, columnist Armando Salguero called Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor a liar. Now the Herald's ombudsman says Salguero did so without any proof that what Taylor had said was a lie.

Salguero's post included this passage:
Although Taylor lies states he would be happy playing for the Dolphins in 2008, the fact remains he wants to play for a winner. The Cowboys fit that bill. Taylor, I am told, would happily adjust his contract to make a move to Dallas for the one more year he says he's going to play. This is not a money issue for him, it is about the chance to go out with a ring and he doesn't think he has that chance in Miami no matter what he lies says to protect his image.
By using the word "lies" in strikethrough, Salguero explains, ''I was trying to communicate that Jason Taylor, some of what he said, was indeed dancing with the truth, was indeed fudging."

But Herald ombudsman Edward Schumacher-Matos says that's not good enough, and I have to agree. If Salguero can demonstrate that Taylor lied at the press conference when he said he hasn't requested a trade, he should do so. If he can't, he should acknowledge he was wrong to call Taylor a liar.

The Miami Dolphins won't pick a starting quarterback at this weekend's June minicamp. Or when training camp opens in July.

No, Dolphins quarterbacks coach David Lee says the time to pick a quarterback is in August, when you can watch him play in a game:

''I really believe this in my heart,'' Lee said. ``You evaluate a quarterback once he gets into a game when people in the stands are cursing at him and throwing ice at him and the Fox camera is running over his head in the huddle.

``That's when you evaluate the quarterback.''

It's good to know that the people in the stands cursing and throwing things at the players will play a part in determining where Josh McCown, John Beck and Chad Henne fall on the depth chart. I'm sure that will make tickets to Dolphins preseason games a lot more valuable.

Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Kory Robertson has announced his retirement. At age 23, without ever having played in an NFL game.

Robertson, who played college football at Virginia Tech, reportedly told his agent that he didn't "have the fire to do it."

At 6-foot-4 and 345 pounds, Robertson certainly looked the part of an NFL defensive tackle, but he was viewed as a project who would need time to develop, which is why he wasn't selected in last month's draft. The Dolphins signed him as an undrafted free agent.

It's always a surprise when someone like Robertson is afforded the opportunity to achieve fame and fortune in the NFL and chooses not to pursue it. But if he doesn't want to play pro football, here's hoping he finds something he does have the fire to do.

We knew the Miami Dolphins and defensive end Jason Taylor were heading for a showdown, and it looks like Taylor will make a big move today: Taylor has a press conference scheduled for this morning, and the Miami Herald reports he will tell the assembled media that he wants to be traded.

The Herald also reports that if Taylor isn't traded, he will seriously consider retiring from the NFL, and that he already has an offer to appear in a movie that begins shooting in October. He'll turn that offer down if the Dolphins trade him, but he might accept if they don't.

So will the Dolphins trade Taylor? I think that between now and September, some team will offer them a third-round pick for his services, and the Dolphins will accept.

Right now, the Miami Dolphins and Jason Taylor are staring each other down. By Friday, one of them will have to blink.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network notes that the Dolphins' mandatory minicamp next weekend isn't just a meet-and-greet session. It's a contractual requirement that Taylor is obligated to fulfill. If he chooses not to show up, he can be fined more than $25,000 for the three days, and more importantly, it could give the Dolphins the right to take back some of the bonus money they've already paid him, depending on the language of Taylor's contract. That could cost Taylor millions.

But there's a flip side: If Taylor shows up to minicamp and gets hurt, the Dolphins would have to pay him his entire 2008 salary of more than $8 million. Given the strong signs that the Dolphins' front office doesn't even want Taylor around, do they really want to risk being on the hook for his whole salary?

Schefter writes that the Saints, Eagles, Buccaneers, Cowboys and Chargers could be interested in Taylor's services. If a deal is going to get done, some time in the next six days would be a good time.

The National Football League is investigating Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Allen over a variety of suspicious activities, the Palm Beach Post is reporting.

According to the paper, the league's investigation started when a suspicious Detroit bank told NFL Security of Allen's involvement in a large amount of money being wired to South Florida. After the NFL started investigating that, Allen was involved in an incident in which he was accused of pulling a gun on a man who confronted him about gambling debts. In 2001, Allen was robbed at gunpoint of jewelry and valuables worth more than $100,000.

Police say they are still investigating and have not decided whether to charge Allen with a crime, but even if he isn't charged, Allen could still be in trouble with the league. NFL rules stritctly limit players' associations with gamblers.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter appeared on ESPN's NFL Live today and lashed out at the New England Patriots, saying that in his mind, Spygate isn't over.

"They cheated. There should be an asterisk," Porter said. "They cheated and they got caught."

In Porter's view, the fact that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell chose to destroy the initial evidence collected on the Patriots' cheating is a sign that it was more widespread than the league wants people to believe.

"Why, if you have nothing to hide, would you destroy [the evidence]? That's how I've looked at it from the beginning. Why destroy something that doesn't have to be destroyed? Let everyone know what was on the tapes. Why would you destroy them so fast?"

Porter called the $500,000 fine assessed to Patriots coach Bill Belichick a "slap on the wrist didn't fit the crime."

Agree with Porter or don't, but while Goodell thinks Spygate is over, Porter is the latest in a long line of people who want to keep it alive.

It's been building for quite a while now but it looks like push has finally come to shove between Jason Taylor and the Miami Dolphins. The final straw may have been his announcement, via ESPN blog, that he was going to be in Los Angeles this weekend. The Dolphins have a minicamp starting Friday and Taylor will be in Los Angeles because "he's got some things to do there."

The Dolphins responded via head coach Tony Sparano on Wednesday.
"I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTAs. I know that Jason will not be at any minicamps. I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp. That's what we know. Jason is a player under contract with the Miami Dolphins. He knows that. Both parties are well aware of the information. That's all I'm going to say about it....I'm not going to talk about another thing about Jason."
Taylor's long maintained that he'd be ready to go when he had to be and that there was no problem between him and the Dolphins. It never seemed that way from the other side and Sparano's comments pretty much confirm that the team is done dealing with questions about his whereabouts.

Taylor's been quite clear about his desire to start laying the groundwork for his post-football career and a move from Miami to a team with a bigger, i.e. winning, profile would be a part of that.

So what happens next? The Dolphins haven't been able to find a trade partner willing to give up value commensurate with Taylor's abilities and Taylor has said that he doesn't plan to retire. The former could change as teams get more of an idea just what they have in house but teams know they're hamstrung because Taylor doesn't want to retire and, from all appearances, Bill Parcells & Co. don't want him on the team.

The other option is that this is a last-ditch effort by the team to get Taylor interested in playing football again but that seems unlikely. Both sides have been acting aggrieved, each with some justification, and things seem too far gone right now for everyone to kiss and make up.

Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Allen is reportedly being investigated for pulling a gun on a man to whom he owed money for gambling debts.

Allen has not been arrested or charged with any crime. A Miami Herald report says that Davie Police have confirmed that Allen answered their questions Friday evening about "a dispute," but the Herald gives few details about the nature of the dispute.

The Sun-Sentinel reports, however, that WPLG-Channel 10 is reporting that the dispute was over gambling debts that Allen owed to another man. The WPLG web site has nothing about Allen.

From the NFL's perspective, it's the gambling aspect of this story that is the biggest concern. The NFL tells players not to even associate with gamblers, let alone get into a position where the gambler is demanding money from the player and the player is pulling a gun on the gambler. If that's what happened here, Allen could be in trouble with the league office.

The Miami Dolphins waived offensive lineman Drew Mormino after he failed a physical. Mormino, a sixth round pick last year, spent all of the 2007 season on Injured Reserve with a torn labrum.

One thing it means ... according to The Phinsider ... that #1 overall pick Jake Long will be able to wear jersey #77. Long wore that number at Michigan; Mormino was assigned that number with the Dolphins.

It also means that the Dolphins will have a very, very, very young offensive line. Long, a rookie, will be planted in as the left tackle. Fourth round pick Shawn Murphy could be the starting right guard. Next to him is center Samson Satele -- a second year player. Sixth round pick Donald Thomas could fight Murphy for a starting gig or, at least, figure in as a backup on the interior of the line. Second year player Ikechuku Ndukwe could factor in as well.

Expect Miami to take a gander at a veteran free agent before camp starts in July.

The University of Texas has had two Heisman Trophy winners, Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. Both of them expressed opinions recently on the legal situation involving another former Longhorn, Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson. We'll start with Williams because his comments are funnier.

After Williams told the Austin American-Statesman that Benson invited him to the boat party at which Benson was arrested for boating while intoxicated, Williams said he's sorry he declined the invitation. Williams said that if he had been there, he has a feeling that none of this would have happened:
"I think if I had come down, things might have worked out a little bit differently," Williams said Wednesday. "I find I have a calming influence on people I'm around."
Yes, Ricky, we know all about your calming influence.

As for Campbell, he called what Benson did a "dumb mistake," and added:
"I think at some point you have to stand up and take responsibility and realize that you not only represent Cedric Benson and the Chicago Bears and your family. It's bigger than that. You represent the university family. You as a man should have some pride in what you do."
I think Campbell is being a little unfair to Benson there. Right now we just don't know what Benson did and whether the police were justified in arresting him. Unless Campbell is aware of evidence that hasn't been made publicly available, he's making an awfully big leap by suggesting that Benson made a dumb mistake, when Benson himself says all he did was try to enjoy a quiet evening on his boat.

The Miami Dolphins tied an NFL record for losses in a season last year, with 15. They may be looking to break a record for Mormons on a team this year, with six.

Of course, the NFL Record & Fact Book doesn't actually list "Most Mormons, Season" as an official record, but Dick Harmon of the Deseret News (a paper owned by the Mormon church) reports that if it were an official record, the Dolphins would be going for it:
As the Dolphins began rookie mini camps and camps for veterans, there are six members of the LDS faith on the team right now, including a trio of veterans, quarterback John Beck (BYU), John Denney (BYU) and Sampson Satele (Hawaii) Steve Fifita (Utah), who was cut and picked up by New England, would have been the seventh, had he stayed on the roster.

The others are Utah State offensive lineman Shawn Murphy, son of former Atlanta Brave star Dale Murphy, who was drafted in the fourth round by Miami, No. 115 overall; free agent signee Kelly Poppinga (BYU) and free agent receiver Devone Bess (Hawaii), who was thought to be taken in the fifth round by Miami but was picked up after the draft.
And as Matt Sussman at Sports By Brooks notes, the Dolphins are so desperate at quarterback, Ty Detmer could be next.

When he was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Bill Parcells made the call to pick Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter in the first round of the 2006 draft. Parcells loved Carpenter and viewed him as the typical "Parcells guy," just as Carpenter's father, former New York Giants fullback Rob Carpenter, had been a generation before.

However, not many Cowboys fans love Carpenter. You can't exactly call Carpenter a bust, but he's only started one game in his two seasons in Dallas, and he's not expected to start this year, either. He's OK on special teams, but when the best you can say about a player after two years is "OK on special teams," that's disappointing for a first-round pick.

But Parcells still loves Carpenter. The Star-Telegram reports that Parcells attempted to get the Cowboys to trade Carpenter to the Dolphins before the draft. And in a sign that the Cowboys still see some potential in Carpenter, they said no.

I'm skeptical that Carpenter will ever be a good NFL linebacker, but if a football man as astute as Parcells likes him -- and if the Cowboys still want him -- he obviously has potential.

This is just weird:

That was Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor's performance during the Latin round on Dancing With the Stars last night, dancing to the Monday Night Football theme song. I can understand, I guess, the choice of song, even if I don't really think "Latin" when I hear the first four notes of the MNF theme. But did Taylor really need to wear the eye black? That just looked stupid.

Taylor is currently in first place on the show, ahead of Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.
