Amobi Okoye and the 2007 Texans Draft Class

I've always found it pretty funny the strong feelings that NFL fans have about the draft. A lot of fans are adamant about who is the right guy for their team, even if they have never seen a single snap of that player. In the age of 24/7 draft coverage and internet draft reports, fans love going Kiper, but hopefully with a more fortunate hair style.

Well, I will up and admit that I didn't watch much any of Louisville at all, much less focusing on the 10th pick in the draft, Amobi Okoye. Fortunately, some wildly enthusiastic Texans fan made a YouTube video focusing on Okoye using Senior Bowl and draft day footage. (embed disabled so follow that link). It's worth a look if you are at all curious about Okoye.

Send a Birthday Card to Amobi Okoye: 20 Spankings Not Advisable

The Texans first round pick, defensive tackle Amobi Okoye turns 20 on June 10th. The impressive story about how Okoye went to high school at age 12, and college at 16 has been well documented. Think of what you were doing or will be doing at age 20. Probably it wasn't or won't be terribly responsible and/or involving moving ginormous growned up mens around.

In any event, if you are a Texan fan it might be nice of you to send him a birthday card at this address. To check out some of his progress, TexansTV today has an interview with Okoye (and also a Gary Kubiak state of the team report).

What Are Your Expectations for Amobi Okoye?

When defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was picked with the 10th pick in the draft, I was fine with the selection. He was the top defensive player on the Texans board, fit an important need on the team, and is the sort of smart, hardworking player that the team covets.

That being said, though he has very high expectations for himself, I can't say that I am expecting a lot out of him this year. He's 19, weighs a little less than 300 pounds and from what I've been told by people who know these things, he doesn't have much frame space to get significantly heavier. Traditionally, the defensive tackle position is a difficult one for rookies to excel at immediately. So far in OTAs, Kubiak has praised Okoye's pass rushing but identifies run defense as something he needs to work on.

"The thing he's doing is he's showing he can rush the passer, which is the thing that stood out about him coming out of school. You look for an inside player that can rush the passer and he's shown that everyday out here.

The thing he's got to catch up on is holding the point, the run game, those big bodies coming down hill on him But, he's doing a good job and he's been in there from day one being put in a starting position, so to speak, and he's handled it like a trooper. He's a mature above his years. We're trying to keep him going and get him better."

Okoye has set high goals for himself, including Defensive Rookie of the Year. Getting that award is a tall order for a defensive tackle given that since 1967, only 5 defensive tackles have been named DROY. Personally, I think Texan fans would settle for a consistent pass rush and a competent run defense.

Louisville Wins the Big East 2007 NFL Draft

To go along with Louisville's 2006 Big East Football Championship, and a nifty pair of Big East Golf Championships, Louisville is also this years winner in the 2007 NLF Draft among Big East teams. The Cardinals were able to land four players on NFL teams in this years draft. They were followed by Pittsburgh and Rutgers with three each, Syracuse and Cincinnati with two each, South Florida and Connecticut each had one player drafted, and dammit I'm missing someone here. Let's see....oh yeah, West Virginia with zero players drafted. Ugh!

Another sign that the Big East is crawling out of obscurity, this was the first year since 2004 that the Big East had two players drafted in the first round. The 16 players drafted this year also compares favorably to 11 Big East players being drafted in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Next years draft should consume more high profile players from the Big East with the likes of Brian Brohm, Steve Slaton, Mario Urrutia, and Pat White all eligible.
