I caught up with Raiders rookie <a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/DarrenMcFadden/">Darren McFadden</a> at the EA Sports Rookie Madden Bowl in Los Angeles. He had plenty to say to his new fans in the Bay Area. And to me. And to his Arkansas teammate <a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/FelixJones/">Felix Jones</a>. I know he's already a <a href="http://www.yardbarker.com/users/DarrenMcFadden">blogger starlet</a> in the making, but clearly he's ready for <em>video </em>fame. Someone get this guy a reality TV show, stat!<br /><br /><object width="415" height="347"><param name="wmode" value="opaque" /><param name="movie" value="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v7.306/en-US/uc_videoplayer.swf" /><param name="FlashVars" value="aID=136626fafb805d7612bba4a38900eebef&amp;site=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/"/><embed src="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v7.306/en-US/uc_videoplayer.swf" wmode="opaque" FlashVars="aID=136626fafb805d7612bba4a38900eebef&amp;site=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/" width="415" height="347" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object><br /><a href="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/videos/36626fafb805d7612bba4a38900eebef?index=0">AOL Video link</a>. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6Ph-iubYPI">YouTube link</a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Also on FanHouse:</span><br /><a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/2008/06/12/ea-sports-rookie-madden-bowl-red-carpet/">EA Sports Rookie Madden Bowl: Red Carpet<br /></a><a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/2008/06/13/nfl-rookies-battle-for-madden-supremacy/">NFL Rookies Battle for Madden Supremacy</a><br /><br /><!-- START SWF PUBLISHER Module: 303854 --> <script src='http://www.aolcdn.com/ke/swfobject/aol_swfobject.js' type='text/javascript' language='javascript' charset='utf-8'></script> <script src='http://www.aolcdn.com/ke/swfobject/alt_content.js' type='text/javascript' language='javascript' charset='utf-8'></script> <script src='http://www.aolcdn.com/ke/swfobject/aol_swfobject_helper.js' type='text/javascript' language='javascript' charset='utf-8'></script> <script src='http://www.aolcdn.com/ke/swfobject/ke_kit_refresh.js' type='text/javascript' language='javascript' charset='utf-8'></script> <script src='http://www.aolcdn.com/_media/modtools/swfpublisherproxy.js' type='text/javascript' language='javascript' charset='utf-8'></script> <script src='http://www.aolcdn.com/_media/channels/jfs_msgr.js' type='text/javascript' language='javascript' charset='utf-8'></script>

Players competed in a tournament just like the regular Madden Bowl held during Super Bowl week, but this one was just for rookies. Oh how I love rookies! He was there to accept the Mickey Herskowitz Award for being the most media friendly Texan. The video above is his message to Texan fans, and what he said to the crowd when he accepted his award. (The "Mark" and "Gary" referred to in the video are Texans TE Mark Bruener and coach Gary Kubiak)<br /><br />Ephraim's personality is as big as he is, which given that <a href="http://www.houstontexans.com/team/player.asp?player_id=215">he goes 6'7" 300ish</a>, means it is huge. Very friendly personable guy. He had a busy offseason of media-friendly duties after he won the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPLX_ckw0G4&amp;feature=related">Super Bowl NFL Player</a> ad contest. After that winning that, he and fellow Texan offensive lineman, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EYk643Qn10">Chester Pitts did repeated guest shots on the Ellen DeGeneres show.</a><br /><br />If he wants, he really should have a career on TV when he retires.<br /><br />Off camera, Ephraim and I talked about how we need to get Ellen to come to Houston for a game or training camp. I think the only nationally known Texan fans are Ellen and George Bush the Senior, as the Texans haven't been around very long and haven't had a winning season yet. They are clearly not a bandwagoners. <br /><br />I told him that if Ellen comes to Houston, I could make sure she received a world class tour of the tailgates, as I am an unofficial Texans tailgate ambassador. Heck, I own enough <a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/category/texans/2007/01/09/2007-miami-super-bowl-parties-need-two-tickets/">Texans custom attire</a>, I could even deck her out for the game. So, <a href="http://ellen.warnerbros.com/">Ellen's people</a>, get in touch with <a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/contact/comments/">my people</a>. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Previously at FanHouse:</span><br /><a href="http://www.fanhouse.com/2008/01/23/texans-win-super-bowl-ad-contest/">Texans Win Super Bowl...Ad Contest</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2008/05/03/texans-lt-ephraim-salaam-wants-ellen-degeneres-to-come-to-a-texa/">Texans LT Ephraim Salaam Wants Ellen DeGeneres to Come to a Texans Game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://nfl.fanhouse.com">NFL FanHouse</a> on Sat, 03 May 2008 10:45:00 EST . He is likely to get lost with Tennessee fans never seeing him play, and Houston fans knowing he will belong in Tennessee's part of the Hall.<br /> <br /><a href="http://www.houstonprofootball.com/"> HoustonProFootball.com</a> has a terrific summary of <a href="http://www.houstonprofootball.com/team/olb1.html">Robert Brazile's career here</a>, and of various <a href="http://www.houstonprofootball.com/team/">Houston greats here</a>. Brazile was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1975, appeared in <a href="http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BrazRo00.htm">7 Pro Bowls his first 7 seasons, was selected All Pro 8 times</a>, and is a part of the <a href="http://www.nfl.com/history/legends/1970s">1970's NFL All Decade Team</a>. <br /><br />He is the only member of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_1970s_All-Decade_Team">1970's All Decade Team not in the Hall of Fame</a>. (the others in Canton are Bobby Bell, Dick Butkus, Jack Ham, Ted Hendricks, Jack Lambert). I believe next year is the last year Brazile will be considered with the modern candidates instead of the few senior candidate spots.<br /><br />Please check out the <a href="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/search/relevant/61a1300bccd83d7f260088cb12971c37">FanHouseTV interview I did with Brazile and Oiler quarterback Dan Pastorini</a> talking about Hall of Fame subjects during a dinner that the Houston Texans had honoring the Luv Ya Blue Oilers in December. (sorry about the music, lighting and the silly laughter part).<br /> <br />If you would like to catch up with the Luv Ya Blue era Oilers, check out this great feature in the Houston Chronicle sports blogs that <a href="http://blogs.chron.com/sportsupdate/archives/2007/12/remembering_the.html">includes videos and recent biographical information</a>.<br /> <br /> In any event, as <a href="http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/T/TippAn00.htm">Andre Tippett got into the Hall this year</a>, I think a great case could be made for Brazile, a physical, quick, intimidating linebacker, a modern prototype at his position.<br /><br />I know a number of Oiler fans visit over here. Does anyone have anything they would like to add to this subject? Additions? It was an incredibly popular subject, and Deadspin's commenters found some truly awful names. Recently I gave some thought to what the worst team nickname of all--high school, college, professional sports included. <br /><br />I think the worst name in sports is the Tennessee Titans. Before you disagree with me, here's <a href="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/videos/day/1b2322db312e31374d1eaacc9620e95b?index=4">the video evidence</a> to prove it (maybe a little NSFW):<br /><br /><object width="415" height="347"><param name="wmode" value="opaque" /><param name="movie" value="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v6.220/en-US/uc_videoplayer.swf" /><param name="FlashVars" value="aID=11b2322db312e31374d1eaacc9620e95b&amp;site=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/"/><embed src="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v6.220/en-US/uc_videoplayer.swf" wmode="opaque" FlashVars="aID=11b2322db312e31374d1eaacc9620e95b&amp;site=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/" width="415" height="347" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object><br /><a href="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/users/texansfanhouse/1b2322db312e31374d1eaacc9620e95b?index=0">Video Link</a><br /><br />%Gallery-12219% Yeah, the Redskins have a name that is basically a <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/redskins/2006-08-11-redskins-indians_x.htm">Native American slur</a>, but at least they have an excuse that it dates back to the 1930's and is intended to honor native peoples rather than offend.<br /><br />When NFL owner Bud Adams moved his team, he wanted to keep the name Oilers but the folks in Tennessee wouldn't allow it. So in 1998, he put together an advisory counsel to come up with names and had a "Guess The Name" contest to get more feedback. Later that year, <a href="http://www.titansonline.com/history/1990s.php">the name "Tennessee Titans" was chosen</a>, meant to reflect, as Adams said, "strength, leadership and other heroic qualities."<br /><br />Apparently, Adams isn't particularly familiar with the sordid details of Greek mythology.<br /><br />Tennessee is a lovely state with beautiful urban centers. To much of the country, however, Tennessee might be considered <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beverly_Hillbillies">backwards and hillbilly</a>. So, I am wondering why you would name your team after Greek gods who had, uh er, lots of improper sexual relationships between family members and other bad stuff.<br /><br />The best I can figure is that Bud Adams likes alliteration, doesn't know much about Greek mythology, but figured "Tennessee Tuxedos" was out of the question. <br /><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.fanhouse.com/media//2007/11/titans-awful-logo.jpg" /><br />To add insult to injury, the logo choice of a flaming tack/flaming meatball might also be one of the worst logos in sport too. Adams said, "I feel we have developed a logo that fans throughout the state of Tennessee and around the country will embrace for years to come."<br /><br />Of course, if you have seen the clothes that man has worn over the years, you can understand why he thought people might like that logo. Besides, he couldn't have chosen a logo that involved improper sexual relationships between family members because I think that would be really hard to draw and merchandise.<br /><br />There's tons of awful sport nicknames out there. Check out this <a href="http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/ ">website for nicknames of every college team in America</a>, which includes some wildly questionable ones. <br /><br />All that being said, I think the Titans name is the worst name of all factoring in: 1. Value of team; 2. They actually spent time, consideration and money choosing this name; 3. That the naming was done in the 1990's and not more than a half century ago; 4. Tennessee folks sensitive to hillbilly talk pick a Greek myth chock full of inbreeding and assorted ook.<br /><br />So, after watching the video, have I convinced you? If not, tell me some worse sports nicknames. And if you were given the choice of naming the Tennessee franchise, what name would you have picked? %Gallery-6080%<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2007/11/28/the-tennessee-titans-have-the-worst-name-in-all-of-sport/">The Tennessee Titans Have the Worst Name in All of Sport</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://nfl.fanhouse.com">NFL FanHouse</a> on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 10:00:00 EST .
