SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers are cutting ties with their general manager, Scot McCloughan, over what has been described as a "personal matter" not related to team issues.Reached Thursday morning, McCloughan told FanHouse via text message, "I'm fine and moving forward." He would not elaborate further.
Team president/CEO Jed York told FanHouse that he did not want to comment on McCloughan's status with the franchise at this time. However, multiple NFL sources confirmed that McCloughan is no longer with the organization because of longstanding personal issues.
"It was by mutual agreement," a source said of the decision that followed a closed-door meeting on Wednesday between McCloughan, York and several members of the 49ers' front office team.
McCloughan leaves at a time when the 49ers hold the 13th and 17th overall selections in next month's NFL draft. However, head coach Mike Singletary -- who has final say in all roster decisions -- has been more actively involved in the scouting, background checks and evaluation of 49ers' free agents and draft prospects.
"The 49ers are in a good position right now; they have their draft and personnel matters well under control, and this is the best outcome for all parties. Everyone can move forward," a source said.
The 49ers are expected to make a brief announcement today regarding McCloughan's departure from the team.
McCloughan joined the franchise in 2005 along with former head coach Mike Nolan as the 49ers vice president of player personnel. He was promoted to the vacant post of general manager on Jan. 2, 2008.
The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, citing sources, reported Wednesday that McCloughan's files were removed from the 49ers' headquarters in Santa Clara following the closed door meeting with top team officials.
McCloughan's agent, Peter Schaffer, did not return a phone call on Thursday seeking comment. But Wednesday night Schaffer told the Sacramento Bee, "Scot McCloughan is not resigning as general manager of the San Francisco 49ers."

@iainrobinson goodell's track record on ALL suspensions. It was 4-6 when he imposed it. Time off if he behaves.

i think we need a gm with balls ala mr eddie debartolo to bring us back to the promise land we mite actually already have him in young jed york whos influence is from eddie...
DeBartolo? Yes, white-collar felons have balls. So perhaps they should peruse federal prisons for their next leader.
Football GMs aren't as important as baseball GMs, mainly because baseball has more player movement. Singletary has it under control, I'm sure. Let's get a pass rusher and improve the O-line. Somewhere, somehow, someday that gem of a late round quarterback (Montana, Brady, etc.) will arrive and glory days will return.
Cool. Maybe Condi Rice can step in and fullfill her dream job.
[Rumors] He's going through a divorce.
Few divorces could ever be described as easy or pleasant, even if the feelings are largely mutual, but most people wouldn't walk away from their successful careers AND get a divorce. It certainly could be nothing more than that at the end of the day, simply love gone sour and the resulting complications. They're apparently calling it an indefinite leave of absence and that's fine, but if he never returns to the organization you can bet there was more going on there than just a divorce.
Dammit!!! If Mike Holmgren could've just waited a few more months. Anyway bring on Mariucci or the Pittsburgh Chin.
The Chin wood be great, but Ronnie Lott would be better.
Great but Ronnie Lott would be better.
Lets see how little Jed York can do ! " Men ! give it one for the Gipper" wow !! what a motivator .. I hope he doesn't screw it up >>>
