FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- With confetti and congratulations pouring down on him after Sunday's 31-17 Super Bowl XLIV ambush of the favored Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton – a guy who likes to celebrate -- said he wasn't sure he would make it to the traditional Monday morning winners' news conference.
He showed up, hair uncombed, bleary eyed, looking every bit like someone who had just spent a sleepless night. Except that Payton did get some shut-eye, with some interesting company at his side.
Holding the Lombardi Trophy in his hands as he faced the cameras one last time before heading back to the Crescent City for what promises to be an epic "Who Dat" victory parade, Payton doesn't sound like a guy who's eager to let it go anytime soon.
"This thing laid in my bed next to me last night," Payton said, holding the NFL's championship hardware like it was a much-loved teddy bear. "I rolled over a couple of times. I probably drooled on it. But man, there's nothing like it."
The sterling silver Lombardi Trophy has a special connection to the Saints' organization. It is named for Vince Lombardi, the legendary Green Bay Packers coach. And Lombardi's grandson, Joe, is the Saints quarterback coach.
Sunday night, the team had a special group photo taken with the NFL's most coveted prize.
"Joe Lombardi, his father Vince Jr. and his two brothers sat and posed with this trophy while pictures were taken," Payton said. "And I just thought to myself, 'You have to be kidding me.'
"If you believe in heaven, and you believe Vince Lombardi's there, looking down on his grandson ... this is the guy who coaches our quarterbacks, who coaches Drew Brees. And here's a trophy named after his grandfather. So you can't ... you can't get enough of this."
There's still a dream-like quality to this storybook Super Bowl championship for the resilient Saints, the longtime laughingstock of the NFL until Payton and Brees rolled into town, and their still-rebuilding city that continues to shake off the devastation of Hurricane Katrina 4 1/2 years ago.
Brees, the Super Bowl XLIV MVP for his 32-of-39, 288-yard, two-touchdown passing performance, woke up Monday and turned to his wife Brittany for affirmation."Did it really happen?" he asked her.
The Saints needed 43 years to win their first Super Bowl, and they relied on the support and strength they received from their irrepressible fans to get them past the AFC's top-seeded team on the NFL's biggest stage.
"We got our strength from the people," said a beaming Brees, a year-round New Orleans resident and advocate, "because we knew what they had been through, yet they continued to fight, continued to believe and continued to have faith. And they helped instill that in us."
"We're going to enjoy this for awhile. I think New Orleans is enjoying it right this second, still. And don't expect anybody to go to work today in New Orleans. Or maybe for the next two weeks, considering Mardi Gras is next week."
Let the partying continue. New Orleans and Louisiana's Super Bowl champion Saints are entitled to every minute of it.
"This is something that I think we all deserve to enjoy for awhile," Brees said, "and reflect on what it's taken to get to this point. All that we've been through, and all that we've fought so hard to get. This is the pinnacle.
"We know what it's like to build something from the ground up and just to feel like 'This is our time, this is going to be our year.' But I think what's going to be fun is using the term 'Repeat' all next year."
Next stop, Skyline Chili. RT @terrellowens: Okayyyyyy I got it now, 2 n's & 1 t! CINCINNATI!! LOL!

Proud of you Saints. A long time coming after all you have been through. God Bless for now cause my Packers will be back.
Yesssssss congrats Saints....also bad bad boys for playing dirty football.Elbows and stepping on players and cheap shots to the QB.
i would like to agree and also congrat. it has been a long time coming. i know what its like. im a chiefs fan. maybe someday we will get back too. wish i could be in new orleans. i lived there as kid for a while. you know its probably going to be mardi gras from now until the end of mardi gras.
Rodfrozilla, thanks for the kind words....yes, we have waited a long long time...and it feels sooooooo good.
Peytan Manning showed VEY VERY poor sportsmanship by walking off the field without a word to Sean Peytan or Drew Brees last night...Even though I am a Saints fan, I loved to watch Peytan Manning play....Peytan, you lost a fan last night....Shame on you..
Did you hear why he left ? No I guess not , he did not want ANYTHING to take away from the victory . He waited until later to talk to them personally !!
A loyal Cowboy fan here!!!! Even though I was a who dat fan last night dont be to hard on Peyton Manning Im sure he thought he let his team down. So lets live and let live How bout dem Saints yee haww Troy
Yo guy with the screen name "Peytan Manning" you know how I know your not really him....him name is PEYTON MANNING. What a dumbass hahaha.
CONGRATS Who Dat Nation NO Saints on wining the Super Bowl it's been a long time coming for the Saints to win the Super Bowl you guys deserved it.
Peyton Manning will be in the hall of fame on the first ballot. He is a nice guy as well as all of his family. The Saints were lucky but you know that the Vikes should be the ones sporting that trophy today. If Favre had just kept the ball on the ground, his kicker would have put them in the Super Bowl and I believe they would have won it. But back to the Colts, they with Peyton Manning probably have at least two more super bowls before all is said and done. This will probably be the last one the Saints ever see. As far as sleeping with the trophy...that shows you what Sean Payton worships doesn't it.
Get lost, fella -- you're as bad a sore loser ass Manning!
ahamm, sounds like sour grapes to me...if "if" was a sciff we would all sink....lol
Sorry [I think}: as
the big walking raspberry to you!
"If favre kept it on the ground..."- he didn't. He made a bad call, and a bad pass. If he were the greatest QB ever, who deserved to win as all had said, he shouldn't have made that mistake. Throughout his carreer he made such mistakes and lost many a game to the same poor choices.Check it out on you tube. he has retired from every team on a game losing pic. He is a quarter back and it is his job to throw the ball. he didn't do his job as well as he could that day and he LOST... Look at the numbers. Drew Brees has led the league in many stats, and made it to the superbowl, and WON. The Saints won because they played better and they deserved to win. if you don't like it, watch another sport.- Question= WHO DAT SAY GONNA BEAT DEM SAINTS!?!?, answer =NOT THE CARDINALS
WOULDA, COULDA, SHOULDA,admit it if the Viking's hadn't turned the ball over so many times, they MIGHT have won the game so give it a rest!!!!
Congratulations to the Saints, they deserve to be the champs. They played hard all year. This is the question that I have? Nobody is crucifying Peyton Manning for walking off the field without the customary congratulations to the Superbowl champs. MSN hardly makes a note of this. Lets rewind to the NBA finals when Labron did the same thing. People were acting like he had killed someone and MSN lit the fire. Things definitely are different depending on who you are and what you look like. THink about it America.
Born and bred in So. Calif---I've visited New Orleans 4 times and I love the city, the food and especially the people!! Have never met anyone who didn't show how much they loved their wonderful city!!! The history of that city, the beauty of the trees, moss, even the crocs are inspiring!!
Great game with a great win for a great city!!!
Great win for the Saints. My hat is off to the Saints coaching staff, they played to win rather than playing not to lose. This showed the players that the staff had confidence in them and further boosted their own confidence. Sean Peyton's aggressive style when all the marbles were on the line had the Colts rocked back on their heels. Finally, I don't think Manning choked when he threw the interception. Rather, I imagine that when the truth comes out the Saint's defensive staff set the interception up and had been planning to trap Manning in the 4th quarter, Manning and the Colt's staff fell into it by going to the well once too often. Just my take on the game.
Set Payton & the /colts up? GET REAL!!! As for the "AINTS" yes it's spelled correctly. Cherish this win bcuz it's the only one you'll get!
