Mike ShanahanMike Shanahan and the Redskins are "in talks," according to a report in the Denver Post -- theoretically, the former Broncos coach and two-time Super Bowl winner would be taking the job beginning next season, even though current coach Jim Zorn has yet to be relieved of his duties.

Shanahan as a coaching candidate would makes a lot of sense for the Washington job, especially from Daniel Snyder's perspective, because he's a high profile name, which Snyder has been drawn to in the past.

More interestingly, though, is the rumor that brand-spanking-new VP of Operations Bruce Allen in Washington was -- had the Buffalo Bills lured Shanahan to replace Dick Jauron -- part of the package.

Not to play the role of Debbie Downer for Zorn, because his team has played well recently, but when the boss that hired you (regardless of how incompetent he might have proven himself to be) gets fired and a new boss starts working and that new boss reportedly happens to really like an unemployed candidate with an impressive resume ... well, then you might want to take the buyout if it's there.

Allen, for his part, is denying that Zorn is a dead man walking:
"Give us some time to see how our relationship develops," Allen said.

"Obviously, Bruce has got the authority," Snyder said. "And when he makes a decision, the club makes a decision, it's a Redskins decision. ... I've not been as involved as people may have thought. In terms of the future, obviously we're going to be counting on Bruce to help lead the way."
Admittedly, this is a pretty nice out for everyone involved -- Snyder doesn't have to look like a jerk when he has Zorn canned, because Allen can do it for him (although most would probably guess that Snyder is involved on some level), Allen doesn't look too bad because he's giving Zorn at least a semblance of a chance before bringing in his own guy, and Zorn even gets to leave with a touch of dignity -- it's not his fault that his new boss wanted someone different working underneath him.
