Bills rookie offensive lineman Eric Wood suffered an ugly injury in the third quarter of Buffalo's 18-15 loss to Jacksonville. The injury was so bad, in fact, that CBS opted not to show any replays of the play because it was too gruesome.Wood was rolled up on during a Buffalo pass play, and his left leg bent at an extremely unnatural angle. According to the Bills, Wood fractured both his tibia and fibula, and stayed in Jacksonville to have immediate season-ending surgery. The injury was easily one of the worst in the NFL this season and could wind up keeping Wood out of the lineup for much longer than the final six weeks of 2009.

You can see video of Wood's injury on YouTube, but be warned that the footage is very graphic.
"No matter how much you work out, injuries are going to happen," fellow lineman Jonathan Scott said. "Unfortunately for us, we seem to get a lot of them at the same time. It's tough because the guys who went down are good guys, hard-working guys. We just have to persevere and try to get through this as best we can."
Wood's surgery replaced the fractured bones, and he is expected to return to Buffalo as soon as Monday. The Bills will almost certainly place Wood on injured reserve and fill his roster spot once Week 11 ends.

Human legs aren't designed to do that. Hope he can come back at some point, if not this season. That's eerily similar to the Theisman injury from years back.
Living in Jacksonville, I could only listen to the radio commentators since the game was blacked out here; but I couldn't make out whether they said it was as bad as Joe Theisman's injury (which I did see, and on two replays), or not as bad. In either case, it was bad enough.
I just watched it on youtube. It's hard to tell at that angle, but the initial contact seems pretty severe. I doubt if it was worse than Joe's though. LT ended Joe's football career.
Remember Junior Seau's broken arm a couple of years ago? That was bad, too.
Doesn't look like he will come back. Joe didn't from his injury. His leg will not be the same in strength. Sorry it had to happen to such a good player and so young. But, that is the risk's you take when you play ball.
"Returning to Buffalo as early as Monday"?
I doubt he'll return to Buffalo today, just hours after having major leg surgery. Even if he did, there aren't enough painkillers in the world to kill the pain he'll have flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet. That cabin pressure will make that the longest and most painful flight of his career.
I wish him the best of luck for a speedy recovery and no lasting damage.

On the contrary. Broken bones are usually stronger after they heal from a break than before. It may take him a while to recover, but if the breaks were clean, he should be fine. He's young and healthy, which makes his return even more likely.
Theismann was 36 years old when he broke his leg and already an "old man" by NFL standards, especially in 1985.
yikes
That was nasty
OUCH..WHAT HURTS WORSE..THE LEG INJURY OR BEING A BUFFALO BILL??
Hurting worse? Leg break or being a Bills Fan? Hmmmm. Almost a tie. It does remind me of the Thiesman Leg Break many years ago! As a PATRIOTS Fan...I know he'll be back next year. He'll need alot of rehab for sure.
That is a horrible statement to make. Eric is a really nice, down-to-earth guy and a human being - have you forgotten what that is? No one should ever have to tolerate such an injury - nor your impertinence. If you don't like the Bills, don't watch the game and please, don't leave a comment.
Altiora, Eric.
REALLY? how tasteless....
What a shame. He's a young guy and that is probably a career ending injury. He's a rookie and will probably never play ball again. Hope they update us on his progress.
quite a number of years ago an Eagles player had a leg broken in a similar fashion. That photo was on the sports page of the Philadelphia Inquirer that Monday.
u talking about bryon evans? yeah I was at that game.. u could hear the crack of the bone all the way up to the 700 level..never forgotten that..
As a fan of the Buffalo Bills, I wish Eric Wood the very best and sincere regret about him being injured that way. I hope that he can make a full recovery and get well soon.
I was at that game today and they didnt even show the reply there, in fact they didnt send him to the hospital until a few minutes after the game ended,me an my friends watched them load him in the ambulance as we were leaving
poor guy
ooh that just bout literally made me sick like dude can I have my leg back I hope he will be able to walk again so horrible for a young guy too
