Redskins Reverse Stadium Sign Policy

Dan Snyder, in making absolutely sure that no one was aware how horrible a job he was doing with the Redskins, recently banned signs from FedEx Field under the pretense of "safety." Local media -- particularly Dan Steinberg -- and fans were outraged (the latter so mad they even drove to Atlanta to protest) ... and rightly so.

It appears now, too, that their effort was worth it -- Snyder and the Redskins announced today that they were reversing the sign policy at FedEx Field.
"We have no intention of trying to control our fans' varied ways of expressing their views on the Redskins organization and the team's performance," said David Donovan, the team's Chief Operating Officer, who has overall responsibility for the stadium.

"We've disappointed our fans so far this season, and I'm as disappointed as they are," said team Owner Daniel M. Snyder. "I understand that some fans want to express their feelings with signs and they should do so, as long as they stay within the boundaries of good taste and don't block the view of other fans."
Of course, it's unlikely you'll see many signs today; the Redskins released the news at approximately 10:30 Sunday morning, just a scant 2 1/2 hours before kickoff against Denver -- given the proximity of the stadium to D.C. and the propensity of 'Skins fans to tailgate, well, yeah, it'll be a signless game except for the folks that thought to bring markers and posters out in their cars.

Additionally, there's two more pseudo-sneaky issues involved here: first, the 'Skins are on the road the following two weeks before returning home for a game against New Orleans, at which time most fans probably will have lost the will to actually be creative. And secondly, the signs must be "within the boundaries of good taste" and not "block the view of other fans." Something tells me anything really nasty about Snyder won't be considered in good taste.

Still, it's at least somewhat refreshing to see Snyder take responsibility as owner and actually admit that Washington's football team is a total embarrassment.
