SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Mike Singletary didn't exactly hand it to his old team. That didn't matter - Jay Cutler handed the desperate San Francisco 49ers a much-needed win.Frank Gore ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, Cutler threw a career-high five interceptions with his last coming in the end zone on the game's final play and San Francisco snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears 10-6 on Thursday night.
Cutler showed up for his postgame news conference still dressed in his uniform, minus his pads and jersey and quickly apologized.
"It was tough. I have to apologize to the defense,'' Cutler said. "I think the offense as a whole has to apologize. They played a great game and kept us in there even through all the turnovers.''
After Singletary elected to punt against his former team on fourth-and-6 from the Chicago 34 with 2:53 left, Cutler drove the Bears to the San Francisco 12 with 13 seconds remaining. After an incompletion on first down, Michael Lewis picked off Cutler's next attempt in the end zone as time expired. That sealed San Francisco's first win since a 35-0 rout of the Rams back on Oct. 4.
The game was far from a pretty display by two struggling teams still hoping to make the playoffs.
Four days after the 49ers (4-5) committed four turnovers that led to 24 points in a 34-27 loss to Tennessee Titans, they were penalized nine times and Smith threw an interception and was sacked twice. San Francisco did just enough right to win.
Cutler took chances away all game from Chicago (4-5), which had 10 penalties and lost its second straight and fourth in five. Patrick Willis wreaked havoc on the Bears with 11 tackles, one of few bright spots for the 49ers.
"It's nice to be on the other sideline of that, that's for sure,'' Smith said.
The five interceptions by Cutler are tied for the most by a Bears quarterback since Zeke Bratkowski threw seven in a 42-7 loss to Baltimore on Oct. 2, 1960.
Cutler threw four or more interceptions for the second time this season and has an NFL-worst 17 in all. He became the first Bears quarterback since Billy Wade in 1962 to have two four-interception games in a season.
"I've played Thursday games before and been successful,'' Cutler said. "It didn't affect us. We saw everything coming. They didn't have any surprises for us. We just didn't execute.''
The Bears got field goals of 50 and 38 yards from Robbie Gould in a game that quickly became about who could keep possession of the ball and make the fewest mistakes.
It marked the first time Singletary faced his former team as a head coach. The Hall of Fame linebacker spent all 12 of his NFL seasons with the Bears, capturing two Defensive Player of the Year awards, being selected to 10 Pro Bowls and winning the Super Bowl following 1985 season.
Singletary wanted little to do with the hype of him facing the Bears, insisting he couldn't think about anything but coaching the 49ers to victory to save the season.
"They're just another team on the schedule,'' Singletary said afterward.
San Francisco won its seventh straight home game against the Bears, including one in the playoffs. Chicago's last victory at Candlestick Park came during the Bears' '85 Super Bowl season with Singletary leading the defense. The Bears had won the last three in the series.
Gore ran for a 14-yard touchdown run one play after Cutler's second interception late in the second quarter as the Niners took a 7-3 halftime lead.
"Everybody has a bad day at work, that's just it,'' Bears defensive end Alex Brown said of Cutler. "We have to be there to have his back and we do.''
Joe Nedney added a 21-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter after missing a 39-yarder wide right on San Francisco's opening drive -- his first miss of the season from inside 40 yards.
Neither quarterback had impressive numbers. Smith was 16 of 23 for 118 yards and Cutler 29 of 52 for 307. Chicago outgained San Francisco 350-216.
Niners tight end Vernon Davis fired up the Bears with his trash talk Tuesday, saying: ``I think we can destroy their front.'' Davis and Bears defensive lineman Adewale Ogunleye got into a pregame jawing session and some of the Chicago captains intentionally avoided shaking Davis' hand before the coin toss.
Davis dealt out his own punishment when he bowled over Bears linebacker Nick Roach, sending him to the sideline briefly on his only catch of the half. Davis committed two false start penalties.
"It was a big relief,'' Davis said. "It's truly a blessing to be able to get this. We just have to keep winning.''
San Francisco punted with 2:53 left to give the Bears a final chance.
The Bears lost tight end Desmond Clark to a neck injury and cornerback Zackary Bowman to an abdominal injury. Niners linebacker Takeo Spikes left the game in the second quarter with a strained left hamstring and didn't return.

Two delay of game calls and the other penalty's are the sign of an undisciplined team and reflects the lack of control by the coach...Trading the future for Cutler who is NOT a leader, plays with a lackidasical attitude and throws directly to opposing teams is a relection of the coach and GM. Bears fans just have to hang on through the next coach who will also be fired because they won't have any draft picks and in 5-6 years, should be a contender again...in the meantime Bear fans, only a few more weeks and a potential win next month against the Rams.

Cutler is way over paid and WAY over rated. Maybe he could ask some highschool teams for advice. I loved the last play of the game, interception in the endzone way to go.

here we go another qb that cant run or operate the bears offense....so is it the players or the designed plays and routes ? hmmmmmm others who left the bears ...how they doing ...albeit some had theyre confidence completely destroyed by the bears system ...and others rebounded didnt they ? I liked this coach at first until I was able to view a few games back in the year they went to the bowl ....I knew the only way they would ever win is if they can overcome theyre coach & plays called ....you can put hall of famers in a bad system and you'd still lose ! dont matter both my teams have been ruined by nuts !!! raiders and bears super bowl !!! lol I think the cubs will proably win the world series before that ever happens lol I dont watch anymore too aggravating ...heck even I can mis manage the clock & call the wrong plays on all downs trade away good players and the likes !!! wheres my playstation game where I can be the owner/manager/gm/coach and players !!!! invent it already and we can go head to head and make fantasy football ...really interesting !!!

I think Jay Cutler would be a lot more effective if the bears had a half way decent offensive line, I think its time to fire Lovie smith and get another coach in there, good luck in the draft Chicago lol

Have you ever noticed Cutlers demeanor? On the sideline shots regardless of the game situation the guy looks like he is sittin in the dentists office waiting for a root canal. No apparent passion or enthusiasm for the game.

You guys all better be careful about criticizing Jay Jay Cutler.
Just last week, a bunch of loser Bears' fans were crybabying all over this blog about how "it's not Jay's fault, but it's the OL and the coach and the defense and anything else but their god- Jay Jay".
Their posts should be coming soon. Look for the "excusers" to come up with all sorts of stats and whiner reasons why it's EVERYBODY ELSE's fault but their king, Jay Boy Cutler.
They consistently forget one thing- to be a winner in the NFL, you need a QB who is a m-a-n.
Jay Boy is a whiney little crybaby p-u-n-k.
Oh, BTW- a nice left tackle at #1 and a nice OG at #3 would have done wonders for this Bears OL. Instead, they gave up those '09 picks for their wonder boy Jay Jay.
This is the funniest move I've seen in years and the moron Bears' fans just open wide and swallow it all. After all, Jay has the "big arm" and he went to the aPro Bowl in '08, right ??
Bring on the excuses, guys.
IT AIN'T JAY CUTLER'S FAULT. The Five INTs were not at all because of HIM. ha ha ha ha ha

Chicago gets the Eagles, Vikings, Rams and Packers the next four weeks.
The Great Jay Cutler should lead the Bears to wins in all four games.
After all, Bears' fans said in September that Cutler's addition means a SuperBowl in '09, remember?
Also remember that the claim was Cutler had a bad OL, a bad "D" and no running backs last year in Denver, yet they went 8-8.
Think Chicago gets to 8-8 this year?
Think a #1 and a #3 for Cutler was worth it?
To me, the answer to both questions is "NO". P

Doesn't fit into the Bears offense!?? You are kidding right? For years the Bears "offense" has consisted of punt returns, kick off returns, recovered fumble returns, interception returns, and field goals. The defense and special teams HAS to score. The Bears place ZERO premium on offensive players, and ALWAYS have. Cutler may not be the star his hype says he is, but even if the Bears had brought in Tom Brady or Peyton Manning their success would be limited with the supporting cast on this offense. Quaterback was a missing piece, no doubt, but the Bears offense was missing about 7 or 8 other pieces. Adding one player to a good offense sometimes changes the equation, adding a player to a bad offense, even a quarterback, isn't going to magically change bad to good.

"..but the Bears offense was missing about 7 or 8 other pieces."
Chicago added Orlando Pace at LT. Kruetz was a Pro Bowl center, Olsen at TE was a star as was Hester at WR. Forte was a highly-touted RB and Cutler was supposed to close the deal. That's six "supposed" quality starters. So the "missing 7-8" pieces was actually just five, and few teams have more than SIX quality offensive starters.
QBs like Matt Shaub (for one example) at Houston do pretty well with only 6 quality starters.
One more thing- the Bears history of defensive points production doesn't mean Cutler wasn't brought in to specifically improve the offense. The issue is not that the Bears need defensive points to win- the issue is that the Bears needed an offense to win.
They still don't have one. Seems like the "poor Jay" folks are emerging from the woodwork. OK, it's not Cutler's fault. It's everyone else's fault.

I don't know why the media has such a love affair with Jay Cutler. He has a big arm, but he's never impressed me as a great QB. He is an average QB, that's it. As I write this, Mike and Mike are talking about how he is still going to be a great, elite QB....despite a career of mediocrity. What has he accomplished? I wonder why they don't give the same credit to Tony Romo, who has never finished a season ranked less than 8th in the NFL for QB ratings, yet they shred him mercilessly if he has a bad game.
Bias much?
