The Eagles held Brian Westbrook out of their lineup Sunday, two weeks after he suffered a Grade 3 concussion against Washington. But Westbrook's post-concussion symptoms aren't the only issue he's dealing with -- Eagles coach Andy Reid said that his running back's surgically repaired right ankle is bothering him again."Brian had some work done on his ankle, so if he doesn't go on Wednesday [at practice], that would be the cause unless something crazy [happens] with his concussion," Reid said Monday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "He had a little bit of swelling, so he had some work done."
The "work done" did not involve any sort of surgical procedure, and Reid went on to say that, if Westbrook has to sit in Week 10 when Philadelphia visits red-hot San Diego, it would be because of lingering headaches due to the concussion. Reid held Westbrook out of Philadelphia's practice last Friday with the sore ankle, but it was the concussion that kept him out of the lineup Sunday night.
Still, any problem with Westbrook's right ankle is cause for concern. Backup LeSean McCoy had an adequate performance in the Eagles' Week 9 home loss to Dallas, but even so, Philadelphia mustered just 89 yards on the ground and the Cowboys chewed up the clock in the second half.
McCoy's capable of a receiver out of the backfield, too (his five catches for 61 yards were both team-highs Sunday), but it's hard to argue against Westbrook's impact on the Eagles' offense when he's right.
That hasn't been the case much this year -- Westbrook's played in only five games and has a measly 49 carries after topping 230 rushes in each of the past three seasons.
