Bumbling Rams Allow Unusual Safety

Rams vs. LionsSunday's St. Louis-Detroit matchup appeared destined to be one of the worst of the NFL season -- the teams entered Week 8 a combined 1-12 on the year -- and one second-quarter play summed up the ineptitude of both teams pretty well.

With Detroit facing 3rd-and-10 from the Rams 12, quarterback Matthew Stafford fired a pass over the middle that ricocheted off the hands of running back Aaron Brown and right to waiting St. Louis safety James Butler.

Butler made a shoestring grab in the end zone for an interception. But rather than take a knee for a touchback, Butler attempted a return, running out of the end zone to the St. Louis 2 -- then reversing field back across the goal line, where he was tackled by Kevin Smith for a safety.

Brown's missed catch was one of at least five drops that the Lions had in the first half.

"Don't ask about that dumb play," Butler said. "I knew it wasn't going to hurt us. I just knew we were going to win because I have faith."

Moments after his mental mistake, Butler flat-out botched a second interception. Stafford overthrew a pass down the middle, hitting Butler in the numbers, but he was unable to reel it in.

The wacky safety didn't wind up doing the Rams in, though -- St. Louis scored late to grab a 17-10 win, its first of the season.
