After paying a hefty price, in terms of draft picks and Kyle Orton, to acquire quarterback Jay Cutler this past offseason, the Chicago Bears have now likely ponied up a hefty monetary price as well. Exact terms of the deal have not been disclosed just yet, but the Bears have announced, via press release, they have come to terms on a two-year contract extension with their quarterback. He's now locked up in Chicago through the 2013 season.Considering some of the contracts quarterbacks with similar stat-lines have signed recently, it's not very likely Cutler would agree to a cheap extension. You can argue whether or not he's a "franchise quarterback," but it seems pretty likely he'd be asking for franchise quarterback money. Then again, you never know, because two years is a pretty modest extension in terms of length. Cutler will only be 30 when the contract expires.
Cutler has been pretty solid for the Bears after an abysmal start on Sunday Night Football -- when he threw four interceptions in a loss to Green Bay. In the four games since then, the Bears have won three as Cutler's thrown nine touchdowns -- and run for one -- compared to three interceptions. His completion percentage has been solid and the team has had good success driving the football, even without the presence of a respectable running game.
The Bears face the Bengals in Cincinnati this Sunday.
Update: John Clayton of ESPN.com is reporting the extension will add $30 million to Cutler's deal, meaning he'll likely make around $50 million over the course of the next five seasons.

Hey Randy,
The NCAA has been a political entity for a long time. Obviously you were never an NFL fan to begin with.

He is worth every penny...but without the above average receiver's that he had in Denver along with the above average Offensive line it will end up being a waste of money. Kyle Orton appears to be the Franchise QB that we had and didn't realize it. Average Coaching and a below average front office will always equal at best a team that gets to the first round of the playoffs and no farther, and realisticly a team (like Da Bears) that will struggle trying to get to the last few weeks before they are eliminated from contention to make the playoffs.

This Bronco fan would "gladly" give back Orton to Chicago for Cutler! Barring injury, Jay Cutler will be in the Hall of Fame........NOT Orton. Believe me, the honeymoon will be over in Denver real soon!

Has a Denver fan I too believed Baby Jay was the "real deal". I kept telling myself that Elway thru alot of INT's too. It came withe the big arm.
I have since discovered after a few years that his great play to stupid play ratio wasn't very good. He is also so full of himself that he thinks he can do anything. He can do anything, anything but win. I'm sorry Chicago has traded away their franchise for several years to come. Chicago will discover soon (just wait till it gets cold) what they have done and Cutler moves on a very rich but hated man. Good luck Chicago. You'r going to need it.

Hey bb07- you got it right.
That "big arm" of Cutler's that all the Chicago fans were drooling about is not turning into wins, is it? They got smacked by the Bengals today and Cutler was horrible.
Of course, the Bears' babies will say he has no OL and no WRs. In Denver, it was "he has no defense".
Every excuse will be afforded to make sure Cutler himself gets no blame. But naturally, in time, as those who say Cutler is a Hall of Fame QB start to see the truth, they will change their screen names and run him out of town.
Sadly, it will be too late. Five more years of no playoffs for the Bears... but it isn't Jay's fault. It never is. LOL

I've been a denver fan my whole life. I was right up there with people who wanted to kill josh McDaniels when he traded off our franchise qb for some so so guy. But obviously he knew what he was doing. Cutler can play but he's gonna throw picks. Just like Farve did. It's that gunslinger mentality. Pay Cutler what you want but his attitude is poor and the first time he doesn't end up with what he wants in Chicago he will be whining again.
