Face it, people. The only reason you don't want to believe this about the Minnesota Vikings is because of him. And honestly, that's fair. Brett Favre drives everybody crazy all summer with his anguished, will-he-or-won't-he retirement drama. There are and should be consequences for something like that. In this case, the consequence is that you won't let yourself believe the gray-haired Sears pitchman from Mississippi has his hands on the reins of the best team in the NFC.But I'm sorry to report that Favre and the Vikings don't care what you think, because as of this morning they were 6-0. And regardless of how good the Saints looked against the Giants, Minnesota is the deserving favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
The counter-arguments to this assertion are few, but they're out there. People think Favre is too old, or that he'll blow it in the end like he did with the Jets last year. There's a school of thought that Brad Childress isn't a good enough coach to pull off a Super Bowl run. And finally, there's the general feeling today that the Saints deserve the title of Best-in-NFC right now because of how badly they beat the previously unbeaten Giants on Sunday.
Well, Favre is old, but the only reason he blew it with the Jets last year is because he hurt his arm. If he stays healthy, there's no reason to think he can't quarterback this team to a title. He's won a title before and knows what it takes. He's playing under control, avoiding risks and taking over the game with his arm only when that's called for. See, the secret about this year's Vikings is that they were already a Super Bowl contender before Favre signed on. They're not about who's playing quarterback. They're about all-world running back Adrian Peterson and a defensive line that, for the past three years, as made the Vikings as hard on opponents' running games as their own running game is on opponents' defenses. They're about depth of talent all over the field. They're stacked, and what Favre brought them is a veteran's cool and confidence at a position where that was lacking.
As for Childress, I don't know. He may be too dopey a coach to win a Super Bowl. But he may not, and it's not as if we have a pile of evidence at this point that he'll be the one that stands in the way. It's not as if the Vikings have been knocking on the door the past few years and missed out on a Super Bowl trip because of poor decisions made by the coach. Childress has never had this good a team before (Favre says he hasn't either), and frankly these Vikings are the kind of team that can make a coach look like a genius.
And then there's this: How do we really know the team the Saints beat Sunday is better than the team the Vikings beat? Sure, the Giants came in 5-0, but against a schedule that would keep them out of contention for the BCS title game. New York's wins were against the Redskins, Cowboys, Buccaneers, Chiefs and Raiders -- a crew with a combined record of 8-21. Dallas, the only team in that fearsome fivesome with a winning record, ran up 250 rushing yards on the G-men and might have won the game had they not managed it so stupidly in the fourth quarter. I think the Giants are a good team, but what have they done this year to prove that another good team, playing at home and coming off its bye, shouldn't be able to handle them?
The Vikings on Sunday beat the Ravens, whose .500 record keeps them out of the discussion about the league's best teams -- for now. Baltimore's record is a particularly brutal 3-3. They were 3-0, remember, and rightfully atop many of the weekly power rankings charts, before losing last-minute heartbreakers to the Patriots and Bengals (each of whom is 4-2). Desperate for a win this week, they mounted a furious rally and had were a field goal away from taking down Favre, Peterson and the gang in Minnesota. Yes, the good teams find ways to win, but the Ravens will be heard from before all is said and done. They finished just one game worse, remember, than the Super Bowl champion Steelers a year ago. In Joe Flacco, they have one of the league's best young quarterbacks. In Ray Rice, they have one of the league's most thrilling running backs of any age. Those who would base their claim that the Saints are the NFC's best on the fact that they just smoked the Giants would be wise to consider just what they were really watching. Minnesota's victory over Baltimore Sunday was at least as good a win as the Saints' victory over the Giants was, and maybe better -- a validating victory after the Vikings' own soft-schedule start to the season.
Things continue to get tougher for Minnesota. They travel to Pittsburgh this week, and the week after they head to Green Bay for a game that will ooze emotion and network-driven hype like few ever have. But with the depth of talent they have on both lines, a slew of skill-position superstars in their 20s, 30s and 40s and the confidence they've amassed during the season's first six games, these Vikings are built to handle it. And to win the NFC.

Weak. The vikings could just as easily be 4-2 as 6-0 and only won two games because of last minute good fortune. I'm not saying they are bad or won't compete, but best in the NFC? Look at how they've actually played. In the first three weeks they faced bad teams and were trailing in the first half in several of them. Against the 49ers they barely won on a last second hail mary that could just as easily have been picked off as caught for a td. And this was with the 49ers missing their best player for the majority of the game. And this was the same 49ers team that just got blown out by the Atlanta Falcons. Then against the Packers they won sure, but the Packers honestly are not that good this year. 5 sacks against the Detroit Lions does not = a team that's ready to contend for the division. Finally, they barely beat the Ravens and were both ran against and passed against with ease. A 44 yard field goal miss is not something that's likely to happen very often. They're run and pass defense has been exposed also, giving up big yardage to Ray Rice, Joe Flacco, and Aaron Rodgers. Now look at the Saints. They've never trailed in any of the games they've played. They have one of the best quarterbacks and wr groups in the league, and they're running back depth and skill is huge. They also have a defense that has dominated every team they've faced. Sure, the Saints schedule hasn't been brutal, but they did dissect the Eagles vaunted defense, beat the Jets, and crush the undefeated Giants. The vikings schedule hasn't exactly been difficult either -- 3 bad teams to start, an overrated packers team, a 49ers team without their best player that just got crushed, and a very good Ravens team that has a terrible secondary. Maybe the Saints will be exposed later on and maybe the Vikings will keep winning. But for now, the Saints are easily the best team in the NFC.

it is true,a win is awin,is awin, not afavre fan,but this guy walks into minnesota,no idea of offense, and they are 6-0. last minute near losses are defense tiring, just like the jets, last year.they are getting better every week,31 pintsa game, now a two headed best,as you recall favres job was to hand off and that is it,wake up,im not saying they will beat new orleans, usethat rusted brain and h\think back to thssteelers recent success, last year they skimmed every game.brett favre is really making alot of writers, analystsetc.,looklike what they are, nobody.the packers were rated 1 this year,he toyed with them, rodgers is the most overrated in history,6-10,not one playoff appearance,2acl ruptures, bad shoulder, foot, hesdon 2 years

Well, isn't it going to be interesting. The Vikes go to Pittsburg and the Pack goes to Cleveland. There's a high probability that entering the week after the Vikes will be 6-1 and the Pack 4-2. What does that mean-well, here's my comment-The Pack has decent defense, now that Kampman is a down lineman again, the Vikes have an awesome front 4-check to the Vikes. The Pack has a great WR core, the Vikes are okay-Check to the Pack. The Vikes have a very good OF line, the Pack's line is at best mediocre (Alan Barbre will not start against the Vikes-wanna bet?). The Vikes have a great running back, the Pack have Ryan Grant-by the way where's that Kid from Northwestern who had great quickness and vision-oh yeah-"dead head" Thompson cut him. Check to the Vikes. The Pack has a great secondary-the Vikes have holes-Check to the Pack. Okay, the Pack has Rodgers-a very good quarterback coming into his own. The Vikes have-oh yeah-Farve-when you let go of your emotions-you can see that Brett and Payton read defenses better than any other QB in Football (Drew's really coming on though). So, even if you give the home field 7 points-the Pack will have to pull up their shorts tight, and play lights out to beat the Vikes-I'm a Packer Backer for over 30 years, but Thompson's ego and his inability to understand it takes 3-5 years to develop a good OF line will end up keeping the Pack from this one- Yeah I know-The Pack is an OF line and good Running back away from being great-two things the Vikes have as well as the Brett master. Here's the score-ready-31-17 Vikes -makes me sick too-But give Brett his due, he came back to a team that can get it all-the Saints have a QB-the Vikes were only in need of a decent one and they got Brett-if Caper's can't get to him he'll slice and dice the Pack secondary because they'll have to "pack" the line to take care of Peterson-sorry boys-the truth is the truth-By God I hope they prove me wrong-Greg

Greg,
The Vikings Secondary 'Sucks' BIGTIME! They're better off picking up some descent collage players and bench their 'half ass Titan like' secondary guys! If they can't fix this problem, they have NO shot in the playoffs nor the Super Bowl! As for the OF front line, they have stepped it up a bit BUT, are going to have to continue to strengthen themselves even 'MORE' in order to protect Favre from getting 'hit!' If the Vikings can't get these two areas under control, their screwed.....period! Pittsburgh will tear these guys apart if they can't get this under control!!

Of course Mr. Graziano would know more about these predictions than I. However, let me make a more slightly more plausible prediction.
The NFC championship will, in all likelihood, be played in a Dome.
As a Saints fan, I would much rather it be played in New Orleans. That way, Brett can lick his wounds at home, and our Minn guests can wash away their sorrow on Bourbon Street. This is not to take away from Brett's spectacular run. I just don't think Mr. Graziano has a clear picture of the Saints balance. Perhaps the stats have escaped his eagle eye, but the Saints have scored more points against quality opponents in 5 games than the Vikings have in 6 games, with fewer points given up per game. Nevermind the fact that the Viking opponents have a combined won-lost record of 12 and 23, and forget about the fact that the Saints lead the Vikings in every major category except for sacks, the real reason the saints will prevail is because of one simple area of past weakness. Brett Farve has been here before, and the one knock is his need to zip the ball to less than open players. If Mr. Graziano learned anything from the highlight reals of the Saints-Giants game (he obviously didn't watch the game), then he would realize that Brett will need to bring a lot more than emaculate receptions to his last supper.
With kindness and southern hospitality.

A very stupid and irrelevant argument. This is 2009, not the 1990s. Stop living in the past, it has no bearing on who's the better team right now.
