Ref Says 'Close Enough,' Gives Steelers First Down vs. Browns

In the second quarter of the Steelers' win over the Browns on Sunday, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger plowed into the line of scrimmage on a fourth-down sneak and appeared to be stopped short of the first down.

Referee Walt Anderson called for a measurement and the ball looked like it was about an inch short of a first down, and the Cleveland defense started to celebrate. And then Anderson signaled first down, Steelers.

"It was a close play - and we got lucky," Roethlisberger told the Associated Press after the game.

Browns linebacker David Bowens said he had no idea how the play could have been a first down.

"He made the call; you have to live with it," Bowens said. "I don't know if there was (an explanation). He just said first down and that's it."

Anderson claimed after the game that he stood by the call, and he said people watching on TV might have been fooled by the camera angle.

"If you shot that angle from the other side, it might actually look like it's further in advance of the stake of what it was," Anderson said.

I dunno. Anderson had a better view of it than I did, but it sure doesn't look to me like it could be a first down from any angle.
