The law enforcement investigation of the deaths of Steve McNair and his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, concluded that Kazemi shot and killed McNair before committing suicide. But a new investigation from CBS News raises serious questions about whether the police properly investigated the incident, and whether they may have reached the wrong conclusion.On Monday's Early Show, correspondent Armen Keteyian reported that his own three-month investigation (video after the jump) found errors made by the police, including a major one about when Kazemi supposedly bought the murder weapon. Police claimed that they had pinpointed the time when Kazemi bought the murder weapon as during a two-hour period when she was absent from work. But Keteyian reported that the police were wrong about the date on which Kazemi was gone from work for two hours, and that there are major questions about whether she purchased the gun at all.

And while police say Kazemi was distraught about being broke, CBS obtained her bank statement and other information about her finances and found that she had more money on hand than she owed in bills. Police also said Kazemi was angry about having been arrested for DUI, but CBS uncovered video footage showing Kazemi at the police station after her arrest, and she doesn't look distraught.
On Tuesday, CBS is promising to reveal a "big" mistake that the police department made in the investigation. Keteyian's reporting has already revealed enough to make me think the police have a lot of explaining to do.

So, what do we have here? A police department that made a rush to judgement or a reporter that thinks he can do a better job than the police? And in the end, does it matter who is right, there are two people dead.

Of course it matters. Yes, two people are dead, a tragedy, but we need the police to do their job and do it right. If they're not doing it right, then we need someone to tell us they're not doing it right and making mistakes.

It matters for 2 reason. Firstly we need to be sure police get it right and not just accept everything they say when facts prove otherwise, because innocent people could be a victim. We would in effect be ignoring possible corruption and abuse of power.
The other reason to get it right is because if this was not a murder suicide then the real murder is still on the lose free to kill again.
yes it does matter. Sometimes the police rush to judgement and are wrong. The Misty Croslin case. they never arrested her and she had no alibi. So the child has been missing since Feb 2009. If the police do not get leads they come to their own conclusions. I have seen many people get arrested just because they found the body. And The Green River murderer was not considered a suspect and he went on to kill 30 other woman before he was questioned again. People are given life sentices on circumstantial evidence. I know 2 people are dead and the issue is, if there is a murderer out there he will kill again. That is why the police have an obligation to get it right.
I don't want to belittle the work that police detectives have to do. It's a tough job, especially when you have to investigate something as gruesome as an assumed murder-suicide. Having said that, time and time again we discover that police don't do their due diligence and it's apparent that they come to conclusions without truely analyzing the evidence as thoroughly as possible.
While this case may carry increased attention because it involves a well known person, it makes one wonder how many other similar cases involving regular people included shoddy police investiations. No one questions those cases with the possible exception of family and friends because it's assumed that law enforcement carried out a thorough investigation. While some may say that the reporter is just opening old wounds, it's journalism like this that exposes incompetence in law enforcement that can ultimately affect all of us.
The saddest part of this case is that just when the families of everyone involved were probably finally coming to terms with what happened and had found some degree of closure, they're now learning that law enforcement may not have done their job thoroughly enough and that there's more to the story.
There is a former Nashville police officer that has questioned the investigation from the beginning. Also, McNair's friend and co-lessee called McNair's other friend, Robert "Big Daddy" Gaddy and waited for him to arrive before the Metro Police were ever called. Evidence tampered with? We may never know.

I agree. The gun was in one hand but gun residue was found on the other?????????? WTH? Residue was found on her left hand, she shot herself on the right side of her head......The evidence does not add up and that isn't the only thing. Several things don't add up.

Oh yeah, did anyone watch the news this morning (10/20/09). There is new evidences evolving the guy who sold the gun to Kazemi.
To me, the only thing that would make this investigation a failure is if a third party was involved and knew the act that was going to take place. Given the circumstances, I don't think anyone could have known unless they themselves had direct contact with McNair, with the aid of Kazemi. Other than a another suspect, when she bought the gun, time frames, and other misc. facts mean nothing. Like someone posted earlier. Two people are dead. She killed him. She killed herself. Blood spatter evidence is just to conclusive and the positioning of the bodies leaves little doubt that the act happened as reported. This timing semantic argument means nothing to me.
if there's more to learn about the motive and circumstances of these deaths, and if someone found additional evidence about the case other than the police, it needs to be brought up. If the whole truth isn't out there yet, I think the families would want to know what else might have been going on.
So...Armen keteyian, of CBS reporteer fame...tells us he did it better, in what would be a murder investigation that this major police department did...A Police Department that sent out its best murder invesitigators to investitigate this very high profile murder...Investigators with many, many, many, years of investigating murders and other major crimes....Armen...how many murders and major crimes have you investigated and sent to the grand jury with proof beyond a reasonable doubt???....None????...Is it any wonder that America finds you and CBS news a laughingstock............
I am the see-er, now is the time for all eye to be open. The couple was killed by a police officer who had contact with the young lady when she was arrested. The weapon use was a drop gun, record can be fixed by the right person. Read the police report, who else would she had let in that late???????
