Plaxico Burress received a rude welcome to prison life Tuesday. When he arrived at Rikers Island to begin a two-year sentence, his fellow inmates taunted him -- sometimes obscenely -- and heckled him with taunts of "Giants Suck," jail guards told the New York Post.Cue the most obvious statement you'll read all day:
"He was depressed," one of the guards told the Post after Burress spent his first night behind bars. "He was trying to keep to himself, but everyone was yelling at him."
Fortunately for Burress, his stay at Rikers was short -- by Wednesday, he had already been moved from Rikers to the medium-security Ulster Correctional Facility in Napanoch, N.Y., where he'll be evaluated before he's moved to a permanent location.
While at Ulster, Burress will be under protective custody and mostly kept from the other prisoners.
"He will be separated from the inmate population at all times and confined to a single cell," Corrections Department spokeswoman Linda Foglia said. "He'll only get out for three hours of recreation per day, plus his required meetings with counselors and medical and mental health staffers. He's allowed three showers a week and one visit per weekend. At 11 p.m., it's lights out."
Burress also will be trading in his No. 17 jersey for his new inmate number, 09-R-3260.
According to the Post, the earliest that Burress can be released from jail on good behavior is June 6, 2011.

Sorry Bill but i cannot get past the ad to post a new topic. aol u need to fix that and is pissing me off enough to consider cancelling our service after 20 plus years.
I feel that this man got screwed! my daughter who was 8 when she was raped at the age of 8 on her birthdays perp got time served after being in jail for 8 months. He was found guilty and later incarcerated for not registering for about 8 months.
This man heart no one! i am not a sports fan but this struck a cord with me. He had a fire arm for protection and did not harm another person.... he was obviously concerned for his well being. i too feel that way at time as a women who is frequently out on my own. i fear for my kids.
how would u feel being confronted by a perp at gun point with you or u and your family being confronted by someone who is intended on harming you or your family?

I can't believe any person, regardless of their beliefs would make such a statement! Bill you are one stupid MF. Athletes (especially football) are being targeted for robbery and some are murdered. Where I'm from it is legal to carry a concealed weapon with a permit. He should have gotten a permit and thats that. The punishment does not fit the crime! I'm beginning to dislike AOL because of people like you.

The punishment does not fit the crime. He should have paid a steep fine and probation. What good does this do anyone. I by no means am a fan of his but really people do things to kids and get less.

Sorry dude, you're wrong. I'm no softie and I'm definitely not a Giants fan, but this sentence was psychotically out of proportion. Work out your issues with a therapist, not on a message board.

It was a stupid thing to do. It was a dangerous thing to do, thankfully no one was hurt other than Plaxico. That being said, (and for the record, I am semi liberal, and am strong anti-gun on the gun issue) I feel that he was used as an example because he is an NFL player. On the heels of Vick and Jones, they decided to get tough. I think that perhaps the people of the community would better be served with him paying a fine and community service. Have him get out there and do gun safety and control lectures to the at risk youth. How much time did Vick do for his heinous crime? Our judicial system boggles my mind sometimes.

He is lucky, for having an unregistered pistol, it is usually 5 years federal penalty.

It's insane how different states have different rules. The Emperor of NYC Mr. Bloomberg just needed to set an example of him. In NJ. boxer Kendall Holt was arrested and convicted of laundering drug money. He got a GOOD attny. He wound up doing community service...Go figure,,Laundering DRUG money and get community service.. It all comes down to who's running for office, who has HUGE ego's..

I'm a Giants fan and a Plax fan, but he was just plain stupid to carry in the City. Part of the mentality of me me me -- part of the gangsta mentality too. Why couldn't he hire a bodyguard?

I'm no longer amazed that there are folks in this world who seem to be chomping at the bit to throw stones at those who fall from grace. They seem to enjoy being involved in contributing to the stinch of hurtful criticism. At times I wish these types of folks never had a voice to air their evil misguided and misplaced ignorance. One can only hope that carma exists and the scales of justice work swiftly with time.

Being heckled by inmates to a newbie does not surprise me, you will be tested the moment you enter the facility, especially if you are high profile, going into special housing is the way to go, lonely but there will be less contact with inmates in general pop. BTW, wish the media would stop calling corrections officers, jail guards, grrrr!

Well maybe if they did some correcting then they wouldn't be called jail guards which by the way is exactly what you are. You can change the name all you want you are still just a guard.

Actually - they are referred to as turnkeys. CO is too much credit for the job (or lack there of) that they do. Coming from experience.
