FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- This is how Jets receiver Jerricho Cotchery knows his quarterback is an overgrown child. On the first play of the second half Sunday against the Patriots, Mark Sanchez hit Cotchery with a 45-yard pass down the right sideline. When Cotchery got up at the end of the play -- a 45-yard pass play, remember -- Sanchez was standing right there in front of him, screaming in Cotchery's face and whacking his helmet in celebration. And it's not the first time that's happened.
"When you catch a long pass 30, 40 yards down the field, you're not used to seeing your quarterback right there in your face when you get up," Cotchery said Monday. "I'm like, 'What happened? Did you throw it and start running after it right away?' "
Much is made (and was, in advance of Sanchez's debut for the Jets) about the drawbacks of an NFL team starting a rookie quarterback. When you're as young as Mark Sanchez is (22), and you're playing quarterback in the NFL for the first time, you make mistakes. Bad decisions. You're overwhelmed by the speed of the game, the size of the defensive players and the fact that they're hitting you on basically every play. This is the conventional wisdom. These are the reasons teams aren't supposed to hand these crucial jobs to rookies.
But you know what? These are the Jets. The perpetually cursed, doomed-to-second-fiddle-status Jets. September's darlings and December's laughingstock. They haven't been to the Super Bowl in 40 years, and the list of quarterbacks that have failed to to get them there is as long as it is comical.
So it might just be that a little counter-intuition fits here. It might make a perverse sort of sense that the Jets could succeed by doing something the way you're not supposed to do it. Like the Seinfeld where George decided to act against his every first instinct and landed his dream job with the Yankees. Last year was a classic Jets dud, so they turned the whole thing on its head. Out went stodgy, paranoid Eric Mangini. In came funny, blustery Rex Ryan. Out went rickety old Brett Favre. In came a kid whose teammates lovingly describe as...
"Goofy," Cotchery said when asked what Sanchez was like in the huddle. "He's calm, but he's playful and just kind of goofy. Like a little kid, just playing around a lot."
It was important for the Jets who were here last year to make a break from it -- to forget the 1-4 finish that cost them a playoff spot that seemed assured at 8-3. An infusion of youthful energy in the form of a so far stunningly competent rookie quarterback has helped do just that.
"We're having fun playing football," center Damien Woody said. "I think that's the main difference this year."And Sanchez is a part of that. He's not just goofy and little-kid enthusiastic on game days. He's like that in practice, sprinting to congratulate Cotchery when they bust a big one against their own secondary on a random Wednesday. He's like that in the film room and the weight room. Monday, he was chasing an equipment manager around the locker room in some kind of bizarre game of "tag" when the media entered to talk to the players.
"It's more just the energy he has. The guy loves playing football," Woody said. "You make a big play, and he's like, ready to tackle you or something. I'm like, 'Man! Slow down!' "
But that's a joke. They don't really want Sanchez to slow down. Especially not as long as he's making the right throws, protecting the ball and winning games.
The Jets know it won't always be like this. They know they won't go undefeated, and that Sanchez is in for a game or two where his rookieness rears its head and his inexperience costs them. But they're prepared for that, because of all the good that comes with him.
"The guy prepares like a pro, but it's all still new to him, so that enthusiasm comes out, and our guys are happy to see him," Ryan said. "I mean, it's like, I love watching him get interviewed. I was watching an interview he gave [Sunday] night, and he mentioned nine different teammates. So he's a great teammate, the guys really like him, he's got a million nicknames ... He's everything you look for."
And it may be that, young as he is, Sanchez is exactly what the Jets need.

Is it me or do all the other Jet fans feel the same way,Its like I dont know how to act I want to bealive but I just keep waiting for something bad.I have been a fan since the late 70s and this team looks for real. This is the first year since the Teteverde injury that I think they can do something special,I agree with everything they are doing we have a real defense a great offense line,2 real running backs,A soon to be pro bowl Tight End,Even our punter and kicker are performing at a high level, Great special teams,Our coaches finnaly seem to be one step better than the rest (so far),And maybe we finnaly have a franchise Quarterback. Its funny because fans of any other team would be talking Super Bowl right now and Im just worried about this week.I guess thats what its like to be a true Jet fan

I agree somewhat with peter - it's hard to not be excited at the prospects of the team this season, but it's also hard not to be in an anticipatory funk about the expectations of the wheels coming off. SO, this year I'm jsut going to enjoy watching a team actually having fun playing and knowing there's almost no pressure. I'm guessing that even the first loss will be quite a show!

Get real... nobody will be saying this stuff in December when the Jets are losing and way out of playoff contention, especially not in New York.

Sorry Geezer but this is a different Jet team built on defense with a great coach and Bart Scott leading the way. This kid Sanchez is a good QB and will only get better. When we add 1 more real good receiver this league will be in trouble. Believe it.

I'm not a Jets fan, but I find it really hard not to like Mark Sanchez. He just seems to work hard. He loves the game. And, on top of all that, he says all the right things and comes off as such a goodhearted, friendly person.
I don't often wish for any college player to go to the NFL and completely fail (though, there are some). But I also don't usually care a lot about which guys succeed (except for players that go to teams I like and players from Ohio State). But I really want to see Mark Sanchez succeed and become a great QB... Even though "my" Browns passed on drafting him =)

You're right Peter. I want to get excited too. But now I just have cautious optimism. We'll see. I've been a Jet fan for all of my 42 years, so I'm used to being dissapointed. I even have the old logo tatooed on my left shoulder blade. what was I thinking?!?

Ha! Rex Ryan...great coach! What a joke.
Rex Ryan is Buddy Ryan Lite! Just look at the 1976 Eagles. Exactly the same crap. Great players under the worst coach in Philadelphia history! Have fun learning the Ryan system New Yorkers! He will destroy any team spirit those guys might have through his childish penalties. Just like his fat ass Dad! Not My Buddy Ryan!

I also agree with Peter, its hard not be Sceptical after all the let downs over the years. As a fan since the mid 70's there has been so many let downs its become expected year after year that something will go wrong even after an 10-0 start in 86, you know the rest. My opinion is, there was something or someone wrong for the organization internally that refleacted on the coaches we had in the past. I don't know what it was but if you take a guy that was the Defensive coordinator here for several years and give him the head coaching job and all he does is quit.
Then turns around and wins in NE, that spoke huge volumes of what had been happening here for years. This is no longer the case, I think this team's ownership is finally doing whats right for the organization, team, fans. They have the right people in place to turn this thing around and our 3-0 start reflects the change in the Jets direction.
The NE fans that are poping off here by puttings Rex Ryan down calling him a joke. Remember, Rex Ryan ran the defense in Balitmore that won the lone SB for the Ravens vs the Giants and they did it with a less talented QB than our rookie. His defense was top 5 in every defensive catagory 5 years running. What wins SB?
I don't care what anyone says we have a shot very soon, maybe not this year but soon. I'm having a blast and I'm excited about the teams future. J.E.T.S. JETS! JETS! JETS!
