NFL Twitter nation had plenty to say on Week 1 of the NFL season, with the main topic of conversation being the Chicago Bears, who struggled through questionable decisions by Lovie Smith and questionable passes by Jay Cutler, and also lost Brian Urlacher for the season. We also have comments about Brett Favre, Jon Gruden and Tom Brady in our NFL Twitter mailbag, which is below.
tgaume: I think Lovie Smith & Charlie Weis have been comparing notes on how to keep from getting a win.
I've always maintained that Smith is a very good coach, but for all his success at preparing his teams during the week, I think he makes more than his share of mistakes on game day. Those mistakes were plain to see on Sunday night.
stonemq: Mark my words, Bears fans will long for the days when they were winning with Kyle Orton
As bad as Jay Cutler looked Sunday night, I don't agree with this. I still think Cutler is a substantial upgrade over Orton, and I think in the long run, Bears fans will be happy with Cutler. But it's going to take longer for Cutler to establish a rapport with his receivers than I thought it would.
lelandroling: Will Bears try to get Derrick Brooks? Rumors are flying.
Bears coach Lovie Smith thinks highly of Brooks, but it sounds like Smith would rather focus on adding younger linebackers, and especially on linebackers who will be solid contributors on special teams. I would have thought making Brooks a Bear would make a lot of sense, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.
RNeilan: Favre does NOT look good. Looks like he's not communicating w/ receivers.
I agree. Favre looked like a guy who spent all off-season on a tractor instead of learning the playbook and practicing with his teammates. He didn't have any interceptions or fumbles, so his Vikings debut wasn't a total bust, but he needs to get better if the Vikings are going to be contenders.
jordanbreen: Feel bad for Gruden. He's clearly one of those people who sucks at names, and probably calls everyone he's met once 'Mike'.
I thought Gruden was OK in his Monday Night Football debut, but he definitely needs to get better with names. Calling Patriots left tackle Matt Light "Todd" once is forgivable. Doing it three times is a serious problem. And I agree with you, some people just aren't very good with names, and Gruden appears to be one of them.
acforever: Brady is a protege of Bill Belichick. So it should be no surprise when he acts like a jerk.
I was surprised by the way Brady ignored Suzy Kolber after the Patriots beat the Bills on Monday night. All he had to do was stand there for 10 seconds, look at the camera and answer Kolber's question. Is that really too much to ask?

I think it was childish that Moss and Webster had to start a fight in front of all those fans!

Geesh Michael - you can't pass up a chance to bash Favre even when he wins! I think Favre looked real good. When he walked off the field and put on his cap, the Vikings were up 34 to 13! Can he improve, of course he can. So can a ton of other QBs, including Rodges and Cutler.

Gee Farve did not throw the ball on every play for 300 yards and numourous touchdowns. But with this team he doen have too. Vikngs had a great running game when he came onboard. So when the other teams start to gear their defence for the running game, they will have Farve to contend with. Smart thinking on the Vikings coaching staff.

The Vikings are trying NOT to show any looks before bigger games. All these people that trash Favre are mostly the Media anyway, if Chilly thought Bret was or is injured or isnt performing, hes off the field and a back up brought in to play instead. The plans are for the team to show a different look with other Quarterbacks and not just Bret himself. So far the teams the Vikings have played, posed no threats to begin with so they havnt shown another look yet and we did get to see a little of TJack the first weekend, but then again it wasnt even as much as we seen TJack play yesterday. The main plan is to get ahead in the North by a couple games and then; allow either Jackson or Sage to start where the team can afford to lose a game, then other teams will need to prepare for a different QB and passing game. BY doing this it confuses the other teams who will be playing the Vikings.
