Out of the 14 NFL players that were franchised in 2009, Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson was the only one who chose not to sign a long term deal or sign his franchise tender in time to make camp. Reportedly, he turned down $23 million dollars in guaranteed money last February, which would have put him in the top three of NFL corners in guaranteed dollars. He sat out all of camp and preseason, then signed his tender a week before the first game, just in time to get his first paycheck -- $585,705 of the almost $10 million he will receive for 2009.Fans were displeased to learn that during the Texans ugly loss to the Jets in the home opener, Robinson was wearing shoes that read, "Pay me Rick." The "Rick" in question is Houston general manager Rick Smith.
As a result, the Texans have fined Robinson $25,000 for conduct detrimental to the team.
"I got here today, and it was in my locker," Robinson said about the official letter notifying him of the fine. "I knew it was coming. I talked to Rick (on Monday), and he said he was going to fine me, so there's nothing to be surprised about. When asked about the shoes after the game, Robinson laughed and said it was to remind him of why he was playing: "to get paid." Fans weren't terribly amused with this act. He admittedly struggled in his first game due to his lack of preparation, and is already getting paid more bank than most people will see in a lifetime.
"It was over a long time ago. I've moved on. Me and Rick don't have a problem. I'm focused on Tennessee (this Sunday)."
Smith didn't like the message Robinson was sending.
"When he reported to sign his contract, I explained to him how important it was that he not let his contract status become a distraction," Smith said. "He assured me he would do that.
"That's not the message we want to send. I explained that to him Monday. I let him know that clearly he didn't get the message when we talked the week before, and we were not pleased with it, and we were going to fine him and that we expected that his behavior be more reflective of our team philosophy and what we believe in."
The inevitable fan-media hubbub ensued, and Robinson eventually made the common modern non-apology, apologizing to "people (he) offended." He explains that the shoes were a joke from months ago, and wearing them last Sunday was a locker room gag. He believes that had the Texans won, fans would have thought they were funny:
Out of touch much? Personally, I think it demonstrates incredibly poor judgment to see any athlete crying about being paid when they turned down enormous guaranteed money, and are still receiving gigantic guaranteed money. I guess he doesn't remember what it is like to struggle to pay bills. The video shows he doesn't get it.
When asked about the shoes, Gary Kubiak said in his press conference that he didn't see them but that he was disappointed, that the matter is being handled in-house and that they need to move on and prepare for getting destroyed playing by the Titans next week on the road.

Yeah, the shoes got a lot of pub. Also getting a lot of pub is the GK "Its my fault" excuses. I have my own....
Its my fault, I did not properly prepare my wallet for the hole in it when I paid for my season tickets (again). I think we need to look at how we scheme and what we are asking the money to do when it is faced with overpriced club seats, overpriced drinks, and an overpriced, underachieving team that have leaders sending messages via shoes.
Pathetic, I must go an vomit know

stephanie nobody cares what your stupid ass thinks. dont cross out "getting destroyed" like this is a note pad. notice im the first comment cause nobody knows/cares who you are. I hope the Texans win so you learn something about football because all you got out of a game is a message on dunta's shoe.

Jordan,
I'd actually would like the Texans to win against the Titans too on the road. They won't win unless they play appreciably better on both the offense and defense. In the game against the Jets, the Texans couldn't run or pass the ball, and allowed 55% third down completions by a rookie quarterback. Are you confident that the Texans can go on the road and beat a physical Titans team?
I'm not quite sure what your point is. You are angry that I've suggested that the Titans may beat the Texans next week? Because that is more likely than not the outcome unless they fix a bunch of things immediately. You think it is a great idea for Dunta Robinson to write "Pay me Rick" on his shoes?

Jordan....Chill bro, Steph is making a valid point. As to being the first one to post may speak to the fact that people like me work and post at lunch time. I might also add Steph has a blog on chron.com/blogs that many people respond to. Got to go now, I have got just enough time to write a message to my employees on my shoes.

I agree the Jets completion percentage on 3rd down was overwhelming. Except for the drive that ended in a Steve Slaton fumble, the offense was anomalous. Proclaiming the 2009 team incompetent after one game is embarassing though because you represent the Texans more than thousands of die-hard Houston fans. Dunta's impatience caused him to make a mistake, we all do that. I apologize for coming at you like that but please uphold the team more respectfully on your platform. Passion rivals criticsm, which side are you on?

Jordan-
I appreciate your thoughts. I could see how this could hit you in an ugly way but I didn't proclaim the Texans team incompetent after one game. The strikedout section isn't a reflection of what I want to have happen, but rather what I think just about the entire universe is thinking, and it was used to highlight the difficulties the Texans will be facing next week to bounce back.
If you wish for a more in depth discussion of what this loss means to the Texans, and a forward looking look at the season, I suggest checking out this post:
http://blogs.chron.com/texanschick/2009/09/houston_texans_reality_check.html
I think it is absolutely compatible to be a diehard fan of a team and objectively recognize what problems are. It might be seen as mean to you, but are you putting money on the Texans next week? They have their work cut out for them.
Cheers,
Steph

Dunta?, Must be from the Ghetto Book of baby-momma names for their kids? He sure didn't major in Finance at college. He turns DOWN 23 million GUARANTEED? WTF!!! THEN he insults his BOSS publicly no less, after the team loses, and he plays terrible! I guess the 23 mil is no big deal, when his greedy attitude and he inevitable injuries force his retirement, he can make the GUARANTEED money up at his next job? Let's see, how many cars do you need to wash and wax to make 23 mil? OR, maybe he'll do the tired and true washed up Ghetto Rat way, and put his money in some "Powdered" investments?

I bought four PSL rights for four seats three years before Reliant Stadium broke ground and I paid $16,000 for them. That mandates that I spend $4,000 every year on season tickets or forfeit my PSL rights. I have gone every year and have been a loyal Texans fan. I am ready to give these tickets AWAY!! Dunta Robinson's arrogant attitude is the reason this team can't win. They are more focused on their astronomical paychecks, custom cars and parties than they are on football. What this guy makes is sickening and he can't even play football. He doesn't want to play football. There are three players on that team that consistenly make things happen and he's not one of them. The others are Football fodder making the big bucks. They deliver about like our government does. We get no return on our investment. "Pay me Dunta".

Some of these NFL players need to swallow their ego before they choke on it. Be happy you made it to play professional ball and that you no longer have to struggle in life.. I played with Marcus Freeman(Bears) in High school for Wayne and were close to Mike Mickens(Cowboys) and Greg Orton(Bengals) who were all drafted this year.. Trent Cole(Eagles) played football with my cousin Tre' Greene for Xenia and made them into the program they are today.. I know these men are happy to have reached their dreams and could care less about being the top paid at their positions... I'd be happy with a starting spot getting paid the minimum salary, just being part of the team. They have reserve players for a reason and don't forget that some can get the job done with the best of them.. Be happy you made it and your not at home kicking yourself for missing your dream.. And for my comrades I mentioned McKelley says good luck to you, we're watching...

I'm not a sports person, in fact I'm just about the most unathlethic person you'll come across, so I don't know much about all these rules in the sports world. But I've come to the conclusion that many of them are just STUPID. Like this one. Someone's feelings got hurt, they were embaressed, so they fine someone a bleedin' $25,000? In my opinion, that's insane. Nothing like that happens in any other area of business. If my co-worker writes something and it hurts my feelings, I can't fine them for a shocking amount of money. In my opinion, my athlethes and those associated with them such as owners, managers, coaches, etc. ALL still have to grow up. I personally thought the place he put this note was witty and clever. I personally knew a groom who's groomsmen wrote "Help Me" on the bottom of his shoes and the entire congregation chuckled the whole way through the wedding. No one got their panties in a wad and got bent out of shape, even the bride. Not this bunch, their funny bones died years ago. Afterall, it was not vulgar, insulting, or belittling. What it boils down to is the sports world does not have a sense of humor. I actually think the team would have looked 10 times better in the eyes of the public if they would have just laughed along with everyone else, but instead, they ended up looking petty and childish because someone couldn't take a joke. Sometimes people just need to be mature and laugh at things, something the NFL isn't able to do.

Lets go back to the days when we had intelligent and classy players in the NFL. Players like; Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Dan Marino, John Elway, Randal Cunningham, Warren Moon, Bob Griese, and Terry Bradshaw, just to name a few.
