Three days after the trade that sent him from New England to Oakland for a 2011 first-round draft pick, Richard Seymour still hasn't reported to his new team. Several people with knowledge of the situation have told FanHouse that Seymour is upset because the trade blindsided him, and that he'd been hoping to sign a contract extension with New England. Seymour is due to make $3.7 million this year and can become a free agent when it's over -- and there's been some speculation in recent days that he could sit out the season if he doesn't want to play in Oakland. But according to one NFL source, Seymour can't sit out the year and expect to be a free agent next spring. If he never reports to the Raiders, his contract is frozen, meaning he'd still be expected to play one year for the Raiders (or whichever team controls his rights at that point if the Raiders trade them in the meantime) before hitting the market.
It's a murky situation that still could end up in the hands of the NFL commissioner, because right now, the two teams involved seem to disagree on how official and final the deal is.
Raiders coach Tom Cable said on Monday that he's spoken to Seymour, that Seymour wants to be a Raider and that he still has "some issues" to work out with the Patriots before the deal is done. Patriots coach Bill Belichick has deflected all Seymour questions in recent days, insisting that the whole thing is in his rear-view mirror and all he's thinking about is beating Buffalo in Monday night's regular-season opener.
It's easy to see why the Patriots would take the stance that they're clear of this thing. They've got a first-round pick (and probably a good one, given the way the Raiders run their operation) in their pockets and Seymour off their books for this year and beyond. Their position is that the paperwork has been filed with the commissioner's office and whatever dispute remains is between Seymour and his new team.
But if Seymour doesn't show up, the Raiders could contend (according to another league source) that the trade was never finalized because the player didn't pass a physical exam. And if that case holds water, a very cranky Seymour could conceivably be returned to the Patriots with the Raiders getting their first-rounder back. The Raiders probably could smooth all of this over by signing Seymour to a contract extension, but there's no indication that they want to do that. They made this deal in an effort to help their 2009 team, with little thought to 2010 and beyond. The commissioner's office isn't commenting on the matter.
"Any comment on the details of a trade between two teams would have to come from the teams, not us," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an e-mail.
But it's possible, unless Seymour shows up and decides to play 2009 as a Raider, that Roger Goodell will have to comment on this sooner or later. And that it could be up to him to determine whether this trade actually happened or not.

I know it's a business, but it's a sh*tty way that the Patriots dealt with Seymour...nice way to treat a player, but look at what they did to Bruschi?

So Rob tells us what the Pats did to Bruschi. As for Seymour, he is injury prone and he would not of signed with the Pats after this year.

WHAT DID THE PATRIOTS DO TO TEDDY ? HE RETIRED BECAUSE HIS BODY COULD NOT TAKE ANOTHER FULL YEAR IN THE NFL AND HE HAS NAGGING INJURIES SO ROB EXPLAIN ? BILL CALLED TEDDY THE COMPLETE PLAYER !! DAM THAT IS SO BAD ! SEYMOUR WOULD NOT RESIGN WITH THE PATRIOTS AFTER THE YEAR ANYWAYS SO THEY GOT A FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK ( MOST LIKELY TOP 5 TO 10 WHICH THEY WILL TURN INTO 2 LOWER FIRST ROUNDERS OR A FEW OTHER ROUNDS BUY TRADING THAT PICK ) I BELIEVE THIS WAS A GOOD TRADE AND NOW IF SEYMOUR WANTS TO COME BACK HE CAN RESIGN BUT HE WANTS MILLIONS TO PLAY AFTER THIS YEAR AND THE PATRIOTS DO NOT PAY ANYONE TOP DOLLAR

Rob, What the hell are you talking about? It is Seymour who has never been fair to the Patriots. He was a major holdout a few years ago due to his greed and with his contract coming up again, he's already gearing up for another battle to be paid way more than he's worth. Plus he's had questionable injuries the past three years in a row.
As for Bruschi, he is the only player who I have ever seen get treated like royalty by Belichick. He retired on his own. After his retirement, it was the first time I ever saw Belichick actually cry.
You just couldn't be more wrong with your comments.

Al Davis gets it wrong yet again ! FIRST you build a strong, modern, football organization. THEN, you build a respectable team, mostly from within. FINALLY, you attract top notch free agents like Richard Seymour to make you a playoff-ready team.
I know that Al, at 80, is in an even bigger rush to get that one last Super Bowl ring. But, if he keeps getting this bass-ackwards - and getting in the way of progress - the Raiders will continue to fail !

Seymour needs to get over himself and report and play football and earn the $3.7 million. Here is a guy who has been around a while and yes ... the Patriots didn't treat him with much respect in how they did this ... but this is a business and trades happen all the time. He is only going to reduce the amount he gets paid about $250,000 a game and game one is coming up soon! Unless he wants to make even less money and have less worth next year ... he better get his big azz to Oakland and start earning some money! He is only proving the Patriots correct to get rid of him when he drags his feet and whines. These are supposed to be MEN ... guess he watched Crabtree and thinks he can make more money next year by being a pain this year! Not gonna work!

I'm so sick and tired of his fans and sports media saying that "Crymour" has all this "leverage and power." In reality, he has NO POWER OR LEVERAGE----PERIOD. He is under CONTRACT and has to abide by the contractural agreement he signed--PERIOD. The only problem here is just how far the NFL, Pats or Raiders want to take this. He's tried this crap before and the Pats cowered to him. If I were an owner, I would bury his ass in a sea of lawsuits, if he pulled this stunt on my team. First, for not living up to the conditions of a legal, binding contract and then blast him with a damages lawsuit. He'd be lucky to be coaching Pop Warner Fottball for the next few years. Public opinion be damned. This is a business and he is violating his contract. For all you know nothing Seymour fans, try breaking a signed contract and see what happens. This is the real world, not a happy fizzies party.
