The New England Patriots have confirmed a rather shocking trade that will send defensive end Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders, according to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that New England will receive a 2011 first-round pick in return.
More Coverage: Belichick Shows No Sentimentality
Seymour, a five-time Pro-Bowler and a three-time first-team All-Pro is coming off a 2008 campaign in which he tied a career high with eight sacks.
This is the second trade between the Raiders and Patriots involving a defensive lineman in the past month, as Oakland sent pass-rushing end Derrick Burgess to New England in early August.
It appears to be a rather good move for the Raiders in the short-term -- and a very, very questionable one for the long-term -- as Seymour instantly becomes their best defensive lineman this season, and they pick him up without having to surrender their 2010 first-round pick (likely to be a high one). The problem, of course, is that he's scheduled to be a free agent following this season. If he doesn't sign, that's a steep price to pay for one year of a defensive lineman that's not likely to be the difference between a playoff season and a non-playoff season.
The Patriots, meanwhile, continue their trend of stockpiling future draft picks (on Saturday, the Patriots dealt fourth-year tight end David Thomas to New Orleans for a 2011 draft pick.) It also creates some long-term holes on the defensive line, seeing as how nose tackle Vince Wilfork is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent following this season.
New England will be filling Seymour's roster spot with offensive lineman Kendall Simmons, according to Schefter.

starting to lose faith in billB's decision making. let asante go, gave away vrabel...not seymour. we already had trouble putting pressure on the QB, this isn't going to help.

I guess Al Davis is trying to stop the blood from flowing but, He needs to think about shoring up that sorry O-line with that so called pass blocking . Damn a 1st rounder though? That will be a top 10 pick . And all we frigen got were 4th round picks for R. Moss and D. Burgess ? Way to go Al. So that everyone can see it is not the Oakland Raiders Team or coaches that suck . IT IS AL DAVIS THAT NEEDS TO ASK THE DEVIL FOR HIS SOUL BACK SO HE CAN FINALY DIE . Then will win again.

Who is going to step up and be the leader on the Patriots? The only defensive hold over from the 01',03', 04' Super Bowls is Ty Warren.. I know there are some transplants(Thomas,Springs,), but now that Bruschi & Harrison retired, Vrabel bounced to the Chiefs, and Seymour to Oakland looks like big daddy Warren needs to step up...

Seymour was on the downside of his career anyway. Plus Pats would never re-sign him for the $$ he would be looking for after this season. Bill B is a genious and will probably get a top 10 pick in 2011. Will probably use the $$ to since Vince W now.

The Pats had 31 sacks last season. 12 of them have left town in the offseason. Those defensive backs are going to get exposed if there's no pressure.

Patriots may be giving up some defense talent, but they must do something to ensure a competitive futre team with the fan base they now have.
SuperBowls or not they will now be a $$$ making machine.
We will have all the Week 1 NFL Winners FREE from Las Vegas...

Great move. Pats just picked up a fantastic draft pick (which they will trade in 2010/2011) for a guy who has contributed little to nothing the last few years and would have resulted in nothing next year. They got value out of someone who has none. Sly.
