Super Bowl XLII Hero David Tyree Cut

David TyreeIn Super Bowl XLII, David Tyree provided one of those incredible moments that will forever live in sports lore. Tyree's career with the Giants did not last nearly as long. New York cut the wide receiver on Saturday, about 17 months after Tyree's postseason heroics.

"Like anyone else, it was a tough thing for David to hear. He's actually saying his goodbyes to his teammates right now," Tyree's agent told the Star-Ledger.

Saturday's move serves to highlight, even further, just how remarkable Tyree's Super Bowl catch was -- Tyree's an incredibly average player who made arguably the best catch in playoff history.

Tyree's ball-to-the-helmet grab that set up New York's title-winning touchdown was his third grab of that Super Bowl game against New England. During the entire 2007 regular season, just to put that in perspective, Tyree made four grabs. His best season came in 2006 -- 19 receptions for 197 yards and two touchdowns. He missed all of last year after suffering a training-camp knee injury.

But no matter where Tyree goes from here -- and there's probably a team out there willing to take a shot on him (Baltimore?) -- he's got his spot in football history secured.
