Michael Vick Can Play Week 3

Michael Vick's long absence from the NFL can end on September 27, when he will be permitted to play in the Philadelphia Eagles' third regular-season game.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters in New York today that Vick will be permitted to play in Week 3, when the Eagles host the Chiefs.

The news first broke on Twitter, from some of the writers in the room with Goodell -- including FanHouse's Dan Graziano, who reported that Goodell said, "We're looking for a success story here."

Bob Glauber of Newsday tweeted additional comments from Goodell: "I'm interested in Michael as a person and what we can do to help him be successful." He called the decision "a gut check" and said of Vick, "He understood and he recognized he still has to prove himself every day. He's realistic about the challenge ahead."

According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Goodell also said Vick is planning on marrying his longtime girlfriend, who is the mother of his children. Goodell has said he wants Vick to be responsible in his personal life.

For the Eagles, this means they'll have two weeks of Donovan McNabb at quarterback and Kevin Kolb and A.J. Feeley behind him. Starting with Week 3, they'll have some difficult decisions to make about how many snaps to give Vick and at which position, and there might not be room for Feeley on the roster.

The reinstatement of Vick in Week 3 ends a suspension that began just before the 2007 regular season and ran through his year and a half in jail after a guilty plea to conspiring to run a dog fighting ring. Vick's last regular season game was in December of 2006.
