ARLINGTON, Tx -- The Cowboys offense can be good and bad without wide receiver Roy Williams.
The first-team offense scored 10 points and had a field goal nullified by a penalty in a preseason game on Saturday night against the 49ers. Yet, this same offense didn't score any first-quarter points for the first time this preseason.
Williams is out with a shoulder contusion and coach Wade Phillips said following the 49ers' 20-13 victory that his wide receiver is feeling better.
"He said he was OK tonight," Phillips said. "I don't know for sure, but he thought he could have played."
In Williams' absence on the first team on Saturday were regular wide receivers Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin. Sam Hurd, another regular, who emerged as a nice backup wideout, missed Saturday's game with a quad injury.
No matter, quarterback Tony Romo found another unheralded receiver to throw to in Kevin Ogletree.
Romo found Ogletree on two third-down plays, totaling 36 yards. Austin also got involved with three catches for 44 yards, including a nice diving grab in the middle of the field. "They are playing well," Romo said of Austin and Ogletree. "They know the offense and they're doing a good job. There's a couple of things we are going to have to work out, a couple of timing things. Overall, I felt they did a really good job tonight."
The Cowboys excelled on third down with their first-team offense, converting five of eight attempts.
"It's what we're trying to do," Romo said. "Good teams are successful in the red zone and on third down, and that's part of the next step for us."
The Cowboys also have a deep running game led by Marion Barber, who changed his running style slightly last season. Toward the end of the season, he battled a toe injury that hampered his progress. Barber turned from a physical back to a finesse one by trying to elude defenders.
Well, this entire preseason, especially on Saturday, Barber made sure he started the contact when he ran into defenders.
And while Barber attacks defenders with a physical style, Felix Jones eludes them. He's got fantastic speed -- a 4.3 in the 40 -- that makes him dangerous in space. Most defenders can't cover Jones one-on-one.
Jones almost broke free for a long touchdown run before getting tripped up when he got into the secondary.

"I really thought I did [break free]," said Jones, who averaged 4.6 yards per carry Saturday night. "The offensive line created a big hole for me and the fullback made a great block. They gave me a couple of options to go either way, but I just didn't finish the run right. I need to pick up my heels and I thought I could have scored there."
Of course, the Cowboys can't succeed fully unless Williams returns. All summer the Cowboys talked about Romo and Williams building chemistry because there was none last season. Williams had just 19 catches in his time with Dallas. In the offseason, Williams began his workouts two weeks before the rest of the team. He caught passes with Romo and discussed what he likes and doesn't like in the passing attack.
But for all the good vibes coming from the Cowboys, there was a need to finish drives. The Cowboys should have an extra three points on their side, but a holding call took the made field goal away. Romo didn't throw a touchdown pass and had a costly interception. The offense was shutout in the first quarter for the first time this preseason -- against a questionable 49ers defense, no less.
"One of the thing we emphasize is situational football," offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said. "You got to be good in short yardage, you got to be good on the goal line, you got to be good in the red zone, you got to be good in coming out in situations. All those things are really, really important and drives hinge on those things you convert or you don't convert."

Greetings David - This article is ABOUT THE COWBOYS, it isn't about the 49ers. How is that showing any bias? If the article was specifically about the Niners, should they talk about a different team?
Gotta love the delusional 49er fans though. They have no QB, no good WRs and a terrible offensive line (league high 55 sacks last year), yet they all think their team is going to the big dance. Take them out of the worst division in football and they wouldn't even sniff eight wins. Congrats, though, they did beat the woeful Cowboys in a meaningless preseason game by scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter with all of the scrubs in the game.

Why are all these topics about how Dallas has been improving? San Francisco is 3-0 (albeit preseason) and nobody seems to care at all, this is like a damn miracle! The cowboys couldn't finish the job and choked, end of story.

Ahh, Yeah! Hate the Niners and all their fans all you want. We'll still be divisional Champs at the end of the year and maybe in the Super Bowl Winning it for our sixth in a row.

You are right man...everyone wants to beat the Cowboys because EVERYBODY hates them. I dont know a single person that likes the Cowpies. At least where I am located. I think people hate them because they celebrate every time they make a tackle, first down, or anything for that matter. I mean overly. It makes them look stupid when they are losing a game. And what do you mean Americas Team? Hell, my son is 12 and he hasnt seen the Cowboys in the playoffs in his life, so he doesnt even know the Cowboys exist. He thought they were a college team! LOL!! I had to tell him the truth though...I told him the Cowboys were a high school team. And I dont want to hear about your 5 rings...its in the past. What have you done lately? I mean, even the redskins, eagles, and giants can win a playoff game. Your team is the joke of the division, not to mention the joke of the NFL. Just say Jerry Jones and people laugh..its really funny! Every year all we hear is how great Dallas is , and how Dallas is going to the Super Bowl from the Cowboy fans (who are the worst in the league too) and what happens? Nothing. Just a bunch of idiots that celebrate all the time and go home and watch the playoffs on tv. Thats it. I mean really man. Put up, or shut up!

YEAH RIGHT, why not keep hiding the truth about the Cowboys from your 12 year old son just so that he can grow up to be just like you....which is PATHETIC! I admire your courage in coming here and kicking a dog while it's down and then when that same dog eventually gets back up and bites your butt you go crying. Why NOT tell us who your TEAM is so I can really educate your son for you?? There has NOT been a single Team in the NFL that has not been bitten by a playoff drought..."Including YOURS!" In fact there have been several other Teams who have taken decades just to get too a playoff, much less win one. There are 31 other Teams in the NFL from 20 other STATES. Than leaves 30 other States without an NFL Franchise and "Several" of those Non Franchise States have Adopted the Dallas Cowboys. All the other NFL franchises hate them because of their winning history and several Non Franchise States love them for the very reason you hate them, for WINNING!
Poor kid, to have such an arrognant father like you. Teach him to be loyal to your team, like you but not to be ignorant, like you.

Thank you for the bit of support Samm, I know it must hurt you to do such LOLLLLLLLLLLL but WE NFC EAST have to stick together. In fact that's why the NFC East is "one" of the best if NOT the Best Division of the NFL. By the time we beat on each other, whoever comes out of our Division is normally ready for the Playoffs!
Nineteen Superbowl appearances, eleven wins from the NFC East ( most of all the divisions).
Mr. Yeah Right says put up or shut up. Typical Dallas Cowboy hater he is, he puts up all the negatives in front of his 12 year old and hides the truth. It doesn't matter who finishes last in our Division, our last place finisher is still normally better than "half" of all the rest of the NFL. The Boys made improvements for this coming season but unfortunately, so has the Eagles, Giants and Redskins. I honestly can not say the same thing about any other Division as a whole.
