Ben Roethlisberger: Injury Was Scary, but Isn't Serious

When Max Starks stepped on Ben Roethlisberger's foot last week, every Steeler in the area's heart jumped into their throat.
"Everyone thought they heard a pop, too. You didn't know what happened. Luckily, it was a bruise," Roethlisberger said.
But Roethlisberger's fears of a serious Achilles injury were quickly replaced by reality: he had only a bruised foot that allowed him to return to practice this week after missing Saturday's game against the Redskins. He'll be able to play this weekend in the Steelers' third preseason game.

If Roethlisberger had popped his Achilles, the Steelers' Super Bowl chances would have suffered a huge blow. With Byron Leftwich backing up Roethlisberger last year, Pittsburgh had a No. 2 quarterback who could conceivably step up and keep the Steelers' Super Bowl chances alive. With Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon backing up Roethlisberger this year, there's more cause for concern.
