Michael Vick Takes to '60 Minutes' to Rehabilitate His Image

Michael VickNew Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is attempting to re-shape his image with the American public, but his first high-profile interview since leaving prison -- which aired Sunday night on '60 Minutes' -- mostly came across as though he was reciting the things his media handlers have coached him to say.

CBS Sports correspondent James Brown didn't ask any questions that could have surprised Vick, and that allowed Vick to hit the basic themes he wants to get out there: He's remorseful for participating in dog fighting, he knows he was wrong, his time in prison caused him to re-think his life, he wants a second chance, and so on.

"First day I walked into prison, and they slammed that door, I knew the magnitude of the decisions that I made, and the poor judgment and what I allowed to happen to the animals," Vick said.

"There's no way of explaining the hurt and the guilt that I felt. That was the reason I cried so many nights, it put it all in perspective. ... When I was in prison, I was disgusted because of what I let happen to those animals. I could've put a stop to it."

The '60 Minutes' interview also showed Vick working alongside Wayne Pacelle, the president of the Humane Society of the United States, who has urged Vick to speak out against animal cruelty. The '60 Minutes' cameras were given exclusive access to a speech Vick gave to a group of children.

"I encourage you to love your animal, your animals -- whatever animal you have," Vick told the kids. "Whether it's a dog, a cat, reptile, you know, if it's a horse, I encourage you to love that animal dearly, with all your heart."

Vick said that he got involved in dog fighting at a young age and that "We didn't think it was bad at the time," but that he now thinks he deserves all the punishment he got. Referring to his NFL-record contract, Vick said, "I deserved to lose $130 million. Why would a guy who's making $130 million, on the flip side killing dogs, they don't deserve it."

And Vick seems to know that his best chance of winning public redemption is to portray himself as someone who wants to put his past bad acts behind him and be a good role model going forward.

"I still, regardless of football, will have a voice that will have an impact on kids," Vick said. "Because I will be a living example of what not to do."
