New Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is attempting to re-shape his image with the American public, but his first high-profile interview since leaving prison -- which aired Sunday night on '60 Minutes' -- mostly came across as though he was reciting the things his media handlers have coached him to say.CBS Sports correspondent James Brown didn't ask any questions that could have surprised Vick, and that allowed Vick to hit the basic themes he wants to get out there: He's remorseful for participating in dog fighting, he knows he was wrong, his time in prison caused him to re-think his life, he wants a second chance, and so on.
"First day I walked into prison, and they slammed that door, I knew the magnitude of the decisions that I made, and the poor judgment and what I allowed to happen to the animals," Vick said.
"There's no way of explaining the hurt and the guilt that I felt. That was the reason I cried so many nights, it put it all in perspective. ... When I was in prison, I was disgusted because of what I let happen to those animals. I could've put a stop to it."
"I encourage you to love your animal, your animals -- whatever animal you have," Vick told the kids. "Whether it's a dog, a cat, reptile, you know, if it's a horse, I encourage you to love that animal dearly, with all your heart."
Vick said that he got involved in dog fighting at a young age and that "We didn't think it was bad at the time," but that he now thinks he deserves all the punishment he got. Referring to his NFL-record contract, Vick said, "I deserved to lose $130 million. Why would a guy who's making $130 million, on the flip side killing dogs, they don't deserve it."And Vick seems to know that his best chance of winning public redemption is to portray himself as someone who wants to put his past bad acts behind him and be a good role model going forward.
"I still, regardless of football, will have a voice that will have an impact on kids," Vick said. "Because I will be a living example of what not to do."

I watched this James Brown interview and it made me sick. That Vick said that he didn't realize what was wrong until he got into prison was bs. He blamed others because he couldn't say no. It was loathsome to watch. Goodell should be fired and the Eagles should be boycotted. Vick is a fake, only saying what he thinks others want to hear. You can see the man has no compassion or any capacity to understand how offensive he is to those of us who love animals. He has no clue what he did to football fans. No clue. You can say he "paid his dues and deserves a second chance" but that man is like looking at a shark. Cold, dead eyes. Killer eyes.

LOWERED EXPECTATIONS is what they ask of us by putting a low life like Vick back on the sports field. The man has no class to even consider coming back after insulting everyone's intelligence for so long and now continuing to do so, lying through his dumb mouth. A man of his callous character doesn't become a better person simply for having gone to prison and he does not deserve to be held up in the spotlight as an example for ANY crazy, contrived reason, regardless. I boycotted the Eagles game today, even though I am a Pats fan. I refuse to watch ANYTHING concerning Vick. I did, however, watch his interview on 60 Minutes and it was PAINFULLY OBVIOUS the man has no capacity for sincere contrition for his heinous acts. He is not capable of that level of thought. Save our youth from watching the travesty of this man being paid even though he is garbage. BOYCOTT his games entirely. The team owners and the NFL ask us to lower our standards for one of our favorite national pastimes. It's like saying we'll take your money, but we don't care about integrity of the sport anymore. Get rid of Vick once and for all or I'm not watching again!

WOW! After reading so many negative posts, I must say that I didn't realize that there were so many PSYCHOLOGISTS invovled (sp) in sports. Many of you are waisting your time if you're not PSYCHOLOGISTS, because you can look at a person on television and tell what they are thinking. Man you're good! Yeah right!

Completely scripted speech. He will say whatever he needs to to get back in people's good graces. I'm just thankful he landed in a town where people can really turn on an athlete. Let's hope he gets his.

I certainly hope that all who comment negatively about Mike Vick NEVER and I stress, NEVER have a bad situation happen to them. We all have skeletons in our closets and all deserve a second chance when we have done wrong and have paid the price. I am not saying what he did was acceptable, but let us see what the future holds for Mr. Vick. If Tony Dungy is standing behind him, then I have a very good feeling that Mike Vick is on the right road. REMEMBER- we are all not perfect and deserve a second chance.

You are so right, he was sorry alright, sorry he got caught. He was part of this dog hell, he was killing the dogs himself, drowning, electrocuting not to mention the pit fighting. What a monster!

This guy is worthless. It is my opinion that most athletes don't have a conscious anyways, he just adds credibility to that.
His P.R. officials are desperately trying to restore his character, and are failing. He should've stayed in jail.
No being, canine or human, should have to go through the pain that this guy put those dogs through.

Oh, get real, it is over, he has paid his debt to society. From your comment you must be someone who knows nothing about getting a second chance.
He knows he made a mistake, it has cost him dearly for what he did, so give it up.
I find it so interesting that here we have a man that has paid his debt and yet it's not over for him, what about Cheney and Bush who lied to the American people and so many of our young men have died for a senseless war, why is it that no one talks about that, what about Muhammed Ali who refused to serve our country, becuase of his new "found religion", a cop out to get out of going to serve, yet he gets treated like royalty, so please, go to church and say a prayer for people who are trying to get a second chance, but cannot because of the ignorance of some people.
Please get real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I agree. Cold, dead eyes. No remorse. But of course, the fools will believe whatever he says because he is a celebrity football player.
It doesn't matter though, because what goes around, comes around. Treat an animal or a human being cruelly for pleasure, and sooner or later, the sword will come back to you.

Wow i can tell that you've been everywhere and did it all well the truth of the matter Michael has made the same mistakes that many of our athletics has done and no doubt will still do, You have to leave your home boys behind and surround yourself with people who you have now elevated yourself to people who has money and know how to invest wisely

My issue was that EVERYTIME, he put "my career" before "my family" in his responses. It shows you why he is upset at what he did. It's not that he hurt living animals... Regardless of what he SAID, it's obvious that his 'career in jeopardy' is why he is upset at what he did.

Jan and Jason, you are so right. This animal doesn't deserve anything! If you can do this to animals you can do this to people. People like that need to stay locked up or took care of some other way. This is such a disgrace to football. I won't be watching any Eagles games that's for sure!

I have to agree with you. Anyone who goes to an eagles game from here on in is making the statement that they condone what Vick did or don't care. Furthermore, he is like a child molester who hurts innocent, trusting children,in that he can not be rehabilitated.....just like a child predator cannot be helped.
Of course, he wants a second chance!!!!That's a no brainer!
If he has it in him to do such heinous things to animals, what else is he capable of?
Nice message to send to our youth! Hey, if you torture, kill and mame animals for sport and greed, then spend a few mnths in jail for it, you can still make millions doing what you were doing before you got caught!

First off, I'm an animal lover, and adore dogs in particular and I'm glad Michael Vick went to jail. I truly hope his work with the Humane Society teaches him what loving creatures dogs are. But having said that, I know people who have grown up in an atmosphere where dog fighting was acceptable and who are otherwise good people. Frankly, it stunned me to find out they didn't seem to have a problem with the fighting. Since it's what they grew up with, they often just don't stop and think about whether it's right or wrong. Similar to those who grow up hunting, it's what their peers do so they do it too. I do think people should take stands on such moral issues, but they often don't in an effort to fit in with others. Many people don't believe that Michael Vick can change, but having seen hunters who have grown up to deplore what they previously did, I believe that Michael Vick CAN realize that errors of his ways. Whether he actually WILL or not, remains to be seen, but let's at least allow for the possibility.
