On Saturday, the New Orleans Saints held their first scrimmage of training camp without starting quarterback Drew Brees, who was excused for what the club said was a "family matter."While the Saints did not go into further detail about Brees' absence, the Austin American-Statesman reported that Mina Brees, Drew's mother, died at the age of 59. Marty Akins, Mina Brees' brother who is a former University of Texas quarterback, said he was told Friday morning that she died in Colorado, where she was visiting her son Reid. The Denver Post later confirmed her death with another family member. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Brees' mother was a prominent Austin attorney who was recently subpoenaed by the Texas attorney general's office. According to reports, her office had sent letters to numerous Houston and Austin restaurant owners demanding at least $20,000 to continue using their businesses' names. She reportedly had until Tuesday to hand over all letters sent to the business owners along with any other documents showing payments she may have received.
Update (8/10/09): Brees was back practicing with the Saints on Monday in Metairie, La. His father, Austin lawyer Eugene W. Brees II, told the Associated Press that the family would have no comment.

I wonder if there was foul play involved in her death...with the deadline approaching for her to turn the papers over and all; it just seems weird that she suddenly died, or maybe the stress of it all got to her...

Drew Brees and the rest of the Brees' family have my deepest sympathy. Losing a parent is one of the hardest thing to endure no matter how old you are. I hope that Drew and his mother made amends before her death.

Read the story carefully. Her son "refused to sign her as an agent", and their relationship was "non-existant". No wonder. Just from what I have read here, I wouldn't have done business with her either.

The article sounds like she either committed suicide or someone did it for her. Usually when someone dies, it usually states the cuase of death.

Mina Brees was a two-bit shyster tort lawyer in Texas whose extortion racket targeting restaurants in the state was just exposed last week. She was being investigated by law enforrcement authorities and the state bar association, and she likely would have been disbarred and gone to jail. She very likely herself out of shame. Drew had had nothing to do with her for years, and for good reason.

Just because a woman gives birth to a baby, it doesn' mean she will be a good mother.

DREW, I WISH YOU THE BEST, BUT, MAY THIS BE A LESSON FOR EVERYONE ELSE... EVEN THOUGH ONE'S RELATIONSHIP SOURS WITH A PARENT, IT TRULY IS INCUMBANT ON BOTH PARTIES TO TRY AND RESOLVE THE SITUATION BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS AND WE WERE NOT MEANT TO LIVE FOREVER, SO NEVER PUT OFF FORGIVENESS UNTIL TOMORROW WHEN TODAY IS THE ONLY DAY THAT COUNTS.
