There isn't a doubt that Michael Vick has paid his debt to society. And, yes, he deserves another chance. And, yes, if some NFL folks want him on their roster, he should be allowed to play again.
But can we talk? Most of those who belong to the Latter Day Church of Michael Dwayne Vick keep exposing themselves as frauds.
They should quit claiming they want Vick back in the league for lordly reasons, ranging from truth, justice, and the American Way to the Judeo-Christian concept of forgiveness. It's really like this: Since Vick spent nearly two years in prison courtesy of that dogfighting mess, they want him to zig and zag his way back into their hearts with his magical legs. They want him to entertain them again.
Everything else is a lie.
Two words: Donte Stallworth.
If any NFL player deserves unabashed compassion -- you know, such as the kind that is directed toward Vick by his congregation -- it's Stallworth, and this is not to excuse his hideous act. He was suspended indefinitely by league commissioner Roger Goodell for killing a pedestrian in Miami while driving drunk.
That said, in contrast to Vick's hideous act involving the torturing and the killing of dogs, Stallworth did everything right in the aftermath.
He pulled over to the side of the road. He immediately called the police. He told everybody from the start that he was drunk, stupid and wrong. He apologized to the victim's family. He tried to compensate the family. As a result of his sincerity, he received just 30 days in jail, a couple of years of house arrest, 1,000 hours of community service, eight years probation and a lifetime ban of his driver's license.
He was released from jail after 24 days last month, and he met with Goodell on a possible reinstatement this week. He still was straight forward. He still was remorseful. He still was deserving of a universal hug.
Why don't we hear cries from Vick's congregation for mercy on Stallworth in light of his consistent honesty?Said Stallworth in a public statement after his Goodell session: "Whatever [the commissioner] ultimately decides is the appropriate discipline, I will accept knowing that I have profoundly affected the NFL and its relationship with the fans of our game. I jeopardized the honor and privilege that I have been given to be an NFL player and to play for our fans. I am truly sorry."
This was after Stallworth admitted the truth of doing "irreparable harm" to the family of the victim. He added, "I recognize that there is a difference between the legal standard in my criminal case and the standard to which NFL players are held."
Did Stallworth write that wonderful statement? Probably not, but he approved it, and given his post-tragedy actions, he meant it.
So where is that universal hug for Stallworth?
Why don't we hear cries from Vick's congregation for mercy on Stallworth in light of his consistent honesty? If such a thing is happening, it is happening in whispers instead of shouts. Instead, you have Vick's congregation blasting supporters of Stallworth by saying that they (whoever "they" may be) are giving Stallworth more of a break for killing a man instead of a dog.
Actually, it's like this: Stallworth should be getting more of a break for telling the truth instead of a lie.
The only statements, words and remarks Vick issued after his dogfighting mess were disingenuous. In fact, he looked Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank in the face, ignored the fact that this was the man who gave him $130 million to become the NFL's richest player, and lied about everything.
Vick also lied to Goodell in a private huddle.
Then when federal and state officials got involved, Vick lied to them. He also failed a drug test after the court told him to stay clean until sentencing.
It was the lying more than the dogfighting mess that contributed to the length of Vick's stay in Leavenworth. It was the truthfulness more than the second-degree manslaughter charge that pushed the court toward leniency with Stallworth.Despite all of their Vick-related talk about the need for mercy and forgiveness in this world, members of Vick's congregation couldn't care less about Stallworth. For one, he was just a decent wide receiver for the obscure Cleveland Browns. For another, he never did anything to zig or zag his way into their hearts.
He never entertained them.

That is great news! That means there will be at least one more ticket available and one more Eagles t-shirt for TRUE NFL fans. Thanks!

its not about lying and the telling the truth. its about stallworth taking someones life. You kill an animal everyday you eat meat. They both broke the law, only one ended a PERSON'S life, a bred fighting dog is no different then a bred beef cow

you hit it on the head, one lied, and one did not, facts are facts! Well if a team gives him a chance, so be it, I would not stand in the way of a man that wants to work. But I will not root for the team that picks him up. I will lose respect for the owner who hires him. Stallworth should be allowed to play again.

Terrance Moore, I've seen your act the Jim Rome show and how transparent your sorry ass really is. You think that in some twisted, clever way you can earn your bones by being the black, tough-minded reporter that is tough on black athletes. You really come across as a sort of Sambo-Sellout. I think I understand your purpose and that would be to do whatever it takes to keep your mug on t.v.. You and Rome belong togeather, just remember to keep your sorry ass's in the studio. I'd love to be in a room away from all of the camera's and see if you had the guts to trash and insuult all of those athletes directly to their faces.

Vick is still a no good dog hating POS, prison or no prison. He has shown NO remorse and would probably do it again for the money. Vick should never play in the NFL again. As an avid football fan, i will not watch any games he plays in, or support any team that signs him. Roger Goodell is hoping and praying that no team will sign Vick.

well here's the thing, stallworth was drunk, stupid, careless and as a result was involved in an accident that killed a man. a terrible thing. he accepted and continues to accept responsibility for his actions. it won't bring the victim back or undo the suffering of the victim's family but at least they don't have to put up with stallworth lying or trying to deny his culpability or make excuses. vick on the other hand willingly engaged in criminal behavior for several years, made money from his criminal behavior, and apparently enjoyed torturing and killing powerless creatures or, at a minimum, enjoyed watching the animals being tortured. and when he finally got caught, he lied, lied, lied and also allowed his buddies to make excuses fo him, the lamest of which was that dog-fighting is part of his culture. so is beating women and selling your kids in some cultures but that doesn't make it legal or particularly appealing to the majority of people. as far as i can tell, vick has never said anything that indicated that he accepts responsibility for what he did adn his only remorse was for getting caught.

The Michael Vick Hypocrisy? how about the Terence Moore Hypocrisy? Look Moore your a bad spokesman and nobody will ever care what your take is on Michael Vick. You hated him in Atlanta always blaming him. how many games did Vick led offense put up 20+ points only for the D to lay down. How many drops did you say were because Vick throws to hard? Yet at the same time you praised Brett Favres Laser of an arm? Moore i don't know you personally but your comments on national media make you look like a sellout. You seem to take the position of the white majority and endorse it blindly. Wake up man you need to realize thats not the worlds greatest tan. You are black.

Maybe he's paid his debt in your eyes, I don't think 2 years is enough for what he did. I certainty don't think he should ever play in the NFL again, another opinion you impose on everyone as the "right" idea

Sorry Janice but if you’ve ever read Uncle Tom's Cabin then you know Uncle Tom wasn't an "uncle tom", Sambo was. So you can say Terrence Moore is Sambo but Tom was a stand up dude in the book so you do him a disservice with this comparison.

I'm not saying Michael Vick should or should not be playing football this year. What I will say is that it is absolutely ridiculous to say that Donte Stallworth did the right thing. Stallworth deserves to rot in a cell for a very long time. We have always been taught not to drive drunk yet Mr. Stallworth decides to ignore the warnings. Donte Stallworth should never be allowed to play football again. I would rather see Michael Vick playing football than Donte Stallworth.

I hope Vick gets reinstated. I will watch every single game he plays in rooting for him. Everyone who can sacrifice missing a football game is clearly not a football fan and will not make an impact to the NFL whatsoever.
