Gannon: Romo Will Benefit From Dumping Simpson, Losing TO

This should go over well: former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon ranks the NFC East quarterbacks and he thinks Tony Romo is the best of the bunch. It's hard to get worked up about such lists since they have absolutely no bearing on how the season will unfold. But that's not the point, at least for fans of the Eagles, Giants and Redskins.

Anyway, here's what Gannon said on Sirius NFL Radio (via the Dallas Morning News' Todd Archer):
"I think now that he's dumped Jessica Simpson, he's got the golf clubs in the closet, he's able to focus, he's got rid of T.O., I look for him to have a great year, absorb and take on more of that leadership with the Cowboys. I just think he's got the best skills of all those quarterbacks. ... He's a great competitor. He's got a little bit of that gunslinger mentality like Brett Favre. He's willing to take chances. I really think he's probably going to have his best year in the absence of T.O."
Because, really, you can never blame Jessica Simpson and Terrell Owens enough. I don't actually think either had anything to do with Romo's on-field performance, but Gannon's probably right about Romo taking on more of a leadership role with T.O. now in Buffalo.

Of course, we could do without the "he's a gunslinger like Brett Favre!" cliches because that's hardly a compliment -- even backhanded -- and I'm not convinced Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett actually approves of Romo heaving punts down the field instead taking a sack or throwing the ball away.

To the bigger question: is Romo better than Donovan McNabb, Eli Manning and Jason Campbell? No idea. Romo, Manning and McNabb are all in the conversation, although I'm not comfortable saying one is clearly better than another. What I will readily admit, however, is that Jon Kitna > Colt Brennan > David Carr > Kevin Kolb.

So if Romo re-injures his pinky this year, Dallas won't have to endure three weeks of Brad and Brooks. So there's that.
