Eli Manning has been rewarded for his Super Bowl victory in 2008 with what sources say is a six-year, $97.5 million contract extension (with an average annual salary of more than $15 million) that will make him one of the highest paid players in NFL history. The contract, which would be added to the nearly $10 million Manning will make this year, is expected to be signed later today.
While the 28-year-old Manning is not typically regarded as one of the top-five quarterbacks in football -- his brother Peyton, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and several others have better numbers -- he has been one of the best in pressure situations.
His most notable accomplishment came in a Super Bowl XLII win, capped by an electric 83-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that culminated in a Manning-to-Plaxico Burress touchdown pass with 37 seconds left. The drive also featured Manning's escape from a sure sack to complete a third-down pass, on which David Tyree made one of the most-heralded catches ever, pinning the ball against his helmet as he was hit by Rodney Harrison.
Manning was the first pick in the 2004 draft by San Diego, even after he insisted he didn't want to play for the Chargers. The Giants then used the fourth pick to take Philip Rivers and traded him to the Chargers with draft picks for Manning.

There is not a sports figure alive worth this kind of money. It is ridiculous.. The sporting world spends money on overpaying their players like corporations spend on overpaying their CEO's.
Do you really think any sports figure should be paid more than the President?

Bullcrap,
too much too soon..doesnt matter anyway, his contract could be ripped up in 1 more year, they could change things, stipulations can come into effect..all we know is how much he MIGHT be getting paid.

It took me to the third paragraph to realize they were talking about Eli instead of Peyton.
This contract is downright nuts. Not because players aren't worth the exorbinant amounts they get paid (that's a different argument) but because while Eli has shown he's a fine quarterback, he's certainly not league-MVP material... And this contract is league MVP money.
I'd like to believe that the market will drive these prices down at some point as fans quit going because they can't afford the tickets, but I'm afraid that's just not going to happen. Rich folks stay rich, and can easily afford to pay these rates -- and with time it's also becoming more and more popular for businesses to buy season tickets so they can entertain clients at the game.
Like everything else in America, the big profits are in catering to business interests, not us regular folks. Isn't much we can do about it. That's just how the cookie crumbles, folks. You can also see this trend in seating arrangements at new stadiums, and renovations to older stadiums. The trend is always towards more club & box seating, as those are the sorts of premium seats corporations want.
We mere rabid fans don't have the scratch, and teams know they can still milk us for fan paraphernalia even if we watch at home or at the bar.

I think Micheal Vick should earn at least this much per month. He's proven himself and is a valueable player.

Too soon. He's been in the league 5 years now and has a superbowl ring. Should he wait till he retires?

I have never heard of this guy, but I betcha that 3 years from now he will be pennyless and bankrupt. For some reason it always seems to happen to the most overly paid players.

How lame a comment is that?
He gets what the market will bear - that is the fact of a free enterprise economy.
Q: Who are you to decide what he can make and when?
A: Nobody.
The market decides, and it has spoken. Personally, I don't think he's good enough to warrant that big a contract... but I'm not the one paying it.

Don't forget that they could have repeated last year if they had a deep threat, the previous one shot himself in the leg. Their lack of repeat had nothing to do with manning, and if you look at his stats, it is rather impressive. 4 years with 3000+ yards, 20+ touchdowns, a super bowl in which he defeated the unbeatable. Last year he had an 86.4 QB rating, 60.3 comp percentage, 21 TDS, 10 INTs, all without Burress and that deep threat. The guy is a legit QB, and handles the pressure of NY rather well. If they felt they needed to pay him this, it can be rationalized. Who out there is going to do better? Carson Palmer, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Maybe McNabb? You don't have but 5 legit starting quarterbacks in the NFL that have proven they have more than one miracle season. His 4 3000+ put him in that category.

What a waste of money...these deals priced me from ever again going to a football game. I would much rather see the money going to public safety.Police and Fire protection... ahhh

I agree... Players getting paid these multi-million dollar contracts are the reason I haven't seen a pro stick and ball sporting event in about 10 years. I don't even watch on tv...

You'd rather see the money go to schools... What the hell are you talking about. The tax payers don't pay NFL players salaries. Having Eli on the team helps to make the teams owner hundreds of millions of dollars. Why shouldn't he get a piece of that?
