Let the countdown clock begin ... again. In five years, one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL will be enshrined at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
As first reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, former Green Bay Packers and New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre has informed Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress of his intent to stay retired.
"I had to be careful not to commit for the wrong reasons. They were telling me, 'You went through all this, you had the surgery and you've got to finish it off.' But I have legitimate reasons for my decision. I'm 39 with a lot of sacks to my name."
Childress and Favre spoke prior to the quarterback's decision going public. Afterward, Childress released a statement:
"It was a rare and unique opportunity to consider adding not only a future Hall of Fame quarterback but one that is very familiar with our system and division. That does not detract from the team that we have. As we have consistently communicated, we feel good about our team and they have put forth a tremendous effort this offseason preparing for the season ahead. With this behind us, we look forward to getting to Mankato and getting training camp underway."Barring another change of heart by Favre (no one can ever really rule this out), or another move by the Vikings, they'll enter training camp Friday with Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels competing for the starting job.
Jackson looked solid in his late-season run in 2008, but sputtered badly in Minnesota's playoff loss to Philadelphia. Rosenfels has never been a full-time NFL starter, but has played well in spurts for Houston.

I think it's a good decision that he is retiring. I just hope he doesn't change his mind again and make it difficult to place him. He earned his reputation, what a great football player and a wonderful human being. Now, I hope the NFL stations use him for commentating, smart man and nice on the eyes too.

hiyadoin12....I didn't say he wasn't a great quarterback. He is a prima donna whether you (with your limited IQ) want to admit it or not. By the way, Peyton Manning could possibly match or break his records.

When someone spends 17 years playing a game he loves and is only 39 and expected to retire you can only hope you would make the right decision and give up a wonderful job.

This is a man who was so distraught about this decision that he had to go out and make a commercial for Sears? Get real Favre, the Vikings are a bad team without you and would be a worse one with him.

None of you see true talent at its best. Yes I believe he should stay retired, but he is one of the few that loves the game for the game. Give a kid a chance huh? How about step up rookie?

He used to play for the love of the game..now I think it's just for spite....he is going to be 40 in October....40 is old for a football player...he should retire for good while he can still move...

Please, no way am I a Cheesehead. I grew up in NYC so you can figure out my team. Oh, and I live in Minnesota and have been hearing almost as much about Farve as I have about Michael Jackson-with about as much joy.
