For the first time since his appearance in Joe Buck's ill-fated talk-show debut, Brett Favre has spoken publicly about his intentions. We know that Favre will play for the Vikings in 2009, if he plays for anyone at all.Naturally, Favre didn't say much when speaking to the Associated Press, but we did finally get a clue when he expects to decide on his football (or non-football) future.
Favre told the AP that his decision is coming soon.
Brett Favre tells The Associated Press that he felt "pretty good" after a workout Wednesday, but he's not yet ready to commit to the Vikings because he wants to make sure he can be effective for an entire season. How kind of Brett to let the Vikings know what will be going on before training camp starts. Actually, if he waits until July 30, he'll be a day late to camp, as players are supposed to report on July 29. At least Favre knows he's running out of time.
The 39-year-old quarterback says he will give the Vikings an answer on whether he'll play this season by the July 30 start of training camp.
"There's two weeks left and I'm doing everything I can," Favre said. "I was down here Sunday morning working out. I'm trying to get everything to where I feel 100 percent when I go in. I can't go in any less. When you're 39 years old, it's hard enough. But it's getting there."The Vikings have not commented, but Favre's public announcement of his intentions (sort of) would incidate that they've signed off on the timetable. After all, if the Vikings had a problem with waiting, Favre wouldn't be able to get away with a delay.
Since Brad Childress is desperate to make a splash, and he happens to be coaching for his job this season, he will do nothing about Favre jerking his organization around. As long as he thinks Favre can save his job, Childress doesn't care about the other 52 guys he will take to Cleveland September 13.
From Favre's standpoint, he'll continue to pull stunts like this as long as there are weak-willed coaches in the league willing to put up with it. It's obvious that Favre detests minicamps, offseason workouts, and training camp, and he'll avoid as much of them as humanly possible without looking like the selfish guy he is.
The Vikings have two quarterbacks -- Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels -- who have gone through the entire offseason program. Childress' reckless disregard for them is astounding, given that he played a role in acquiring both of them. If Favre shows up, and one of them were to request a trade, would the Vikings do the honorable thing and make the move?
While it's easy to rip Favre for his behavior this summer, the reality is that there would be no behavior like this if it weren't for Childress. It's always been true that desperate men do desperate things, and Childress is certainly desperate.

Bruce - This is just another example that you are nothing more than a hate-mongering pile of dung that enjoys ripping the Vikings Management and their ideals. If you had half the moral integrity of Brett Favre or Brad Childress, you wouldn't be writing this crap.

Yes. That is integrity. You clowns think that you are smarter than the entire Vikings Management team. You got all the answers. Everybody else is an idiot. Well, I got some breaking news for you - they are smarter than you think!

I can't believe they are catering to him like this! It's going to be AP left, AP right, AP up the middle anyway.

Childress is desperate. he obviously lacks confidence in his ability to obtain players; first T Jackson is the future, then Gus is the man, then its lets trade for Sage to come in and be the man; and im not a Vikings guru but didnt they draft David-Booty too. so its lets delay the development of our future to hopefully save my job; good luck Childress..... hey it worked out well for Mangini.

Well, from Childress's persective, the Vikes won't get to the promise land with Jackson, so what does he have to lose? As for Favre having integrity....LMAO....I smell poo, but sorry John it's coming from your direction. And if Favre is worried about staying healthy through the regular season, that doesn't bode well for the post season.

Favre was a member of a championship team twelve years ago. I had respect for him and I try to hang on to that but this is really shaking out kind of weird. Favre seems to embellish drama to the point you just kind of get sick of it all.

The one to feel sorry for, is Deanna Favre. She has to put up with living with a 40 year old kid, that hasn't a clue on "What do I do, now ??". Even Bart Starr knew when to retire, as I seem to remember. Johnny Unitas, Broadway Joe.....the list goes on, and on....and on....

As a life long Vikings fan, I hope to see Brett Favre in purple. I think he can help our team. The only thing that sucks about him helping us win is that it would allow Childress to keep his job. He may be the worst coach I have ever witnessed. On top of that, his waiting around for Farve without making, and sticking to, a mandated decision timeline simply shows he is a spineless douchebag as well as a crappy coach. Lucky us!
Signed,
Viking fans

I've always thought it was a waste of a veterans time and body to attend training camp. He'll be ready on opening day. Why use him up with a bunch of nonsense he's been through every year? I know a lot of people will say he needs it. Bull. Leading your team to the super bowl, or playoffs almost every season isn't enough? Now you have to suck up? LOL
