It's July, the slowest month of the year for the NFL, and it's driving you nuts. You need a fix. A hit. Anything NFL to pull you through the dog days. FanHouse is here to help with an in-depth look at each division that should have you plenty prepared for training camp. We're calling it the Summer Scramble, and today we take a look at some burning questions in the NFC East. As a bonus, we also predict the order of finish (though we admit it's ridiculously early).
• Is it Jason Campbell's fault that he has yet to live up to his potential?
We start with the Redskins because so many of their fans felt compelled to chime in on yesterday's entry. For the record, yes, I understand that right tackle, nickel corner and third down strong side linebacker are some of the actual "position battles" the team will try to sort out come training camp. But the point of this is to keep people awake during a slow time of year here, the Zorn-Portis thing is real whether you want to believe it or not, and sometimes I still forget how VERY SERIOUS we're all supposed to be about everything associated with the NFL.
Aaaaanyway, Campbell. My answer is no, not completely. As in, nothing that's happened so far constitutes a reason to give up on Campbell as Washington's long-term solution at quarterback. He doesn't throw interceptions. He's demonstrated some decent on-field decision-making. And he has all the necessary physical tools. It's been pointed out before, but it's worth mentioning that this will be the first time in his pro career that Campbell has had the same head coach and offensive coordinator for the second year in a row. The team's off-season coveting of quarterbacks like Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez was unnecessary and unfair to the guy they already have. Campbell hasn't been around long enough to be given up on.
One of Campbell's problems this year is likely to be the lack of a game-breaking receiver. Second-year man Devin Thomas needs to step up and earn enough playing time to be an athletic difference-maker, because they're not likely to find many yards-after-the-catch downfield in the fingers on Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle-El. The Redskins will need to run the ball and trust their defense if they're to be a factor in the toughest division in the NFL, but Campbell's not going to sink their season.
• Do the Cowboys need to become a running team with Terrell Owens gone?
They should, but they probably should have done this last year. Dallas is deep at running back. Marion Barber is a classic wear-down-the-defense bruiser (who can catch, too), and teamed with Felix Jones and Tashard Choice he could give the Cowboys the kind of triple-threat running attack that helped make the Giants' running game so successful the past few years. Roy Williams may well be good enough to approximate Owens' production at the No. 1 receiver spot, but it shouldn't matter much whether he is or who starts opposite him. The Cowboys will be at their best when Tony Romo is handing the ball off in the backfield, wearing down the opposing defense and the clock and keeping the Dallas defense (outstanding front seven, suspect secondary) rested.
• Can the Eagles' defense be as good without Brian Dawkins (and maybe without Jim Johnson)?
Personnel-wise, Philadelphia's defense could well turn out to be the best in the league. Quintin Demps, Sean Jones and Ellis Hobbs are talented enough to make up for the losses of Lito Sheppard and the aging Dawkins in the secondary, meaning overall this may be a better group than the outstanding one that led the Eagles to the playoffs (and very nearly the Super Bowl) last year. But it's hard to estimate the extent to which they'll miss the leadership that Dawkins brought to his position. And if Johnson, the longtime defensive coordinator who's on leave right now as he battles skin cancer, has to miss time during the season, the Philly defense could lose some of its edge. Johnson's an instinctive play-caller who's become legendary for the way his hunches pay off, and there's no way to know how much or in what way his presence on the sideline would be missed. The Eagles and everybody who knows Johnson hope they don't have to find out.
• How much will the Giants miss Derrick Ward in the running game?
All of the talk seems to be about who will replace Plaxico Burress in the passing game, and that's fair. New York missed Burress terribly in the second half last year. But Ward's free-agent defection could have more of an impact than is being estimated. As the middle part of the Giants' "Earth, Wind and Fire" running game, Ward was a crucial piece. Without him, it'll be more important than ever that Brandon Jacobs stay healthy, and Ahmad Bradshaw will have to take on more carries. The Giants' coaching staff believes Bradshaw can do that, but they don't know for sure. Ward had 182 carries last year. Bradshaw has 90 for his career. They drafted Andre Brown to help out, but he's a rookie, which means they don't know how much they can count on him. If Ward's departure weakens the running game, that's going to increase the pressure on Eli Manning and whichever wide receivers he ends up throwing to. And that's not where the Giants want the pressure to be.
RIDICULOUSLY EARLY PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH
1. Giants (11-5). Depth on defense (assuming Michael Boley can find the field), a fearsome pass rush and championship experience add up to a slight edge in a very tough race to call.
2. Eagles (11-5). They re-stocked the offensive line and got some fun new targets for Donovan McNabb. If Brian Westbrook is healthy, this could be the league's best team.
3. Cowboys (9-7). Some believe the subtraction of T.O. makes them Super Bowl contenders. We're calling them one of three NFC East playoff teams.
4. Redskins (8-8). They're not a bad team, but they're not a great one, and to win this division you're going to have to be great.

Dan Graziano mark my words you will eat those words you spoke about SANTANA MOSS,this upcoming year when we have other potential threats in the wide reciever game Santana will shine, the past few years he has been double teamed so he has not had the chance (well except some GREAT PLAYS),so i except this year other wide recievers on the skins will get just as much attention and this will leave in my opinion Santana to do his thing and shine (he is an assett to us so dont count him out just yet)..As ive said mark my words you will eat your statement on Santana..Best Regards Steve Dublin Ireland

Are you kidding? The New York Yankees will the most beautiful stadium in all of sports do not have Yankee fans bored. Yes the Giants will do great but it would be hard to watch a Yankees game with the Yankees still playing. Look at attendance at Yankee Stadium which averages 46,000 per game for 81 home games a year. After the baseball season is over and our Bronx Bombers smash the Red Sox and the NL, then I'll probably watch NY Giants football.

You know things are bad when one of the richest men in the world thinks its overpriced. Steinbrenner left the common man out in the cold. Everyone else thinks you are wrong buddy.

The comment on Santana isn't justified seeing as you just called him out on the best part of his game...YAC. He is amazing in open field hence the screen passes for TD's the long 60-70 yard TD he had against the Saints to win. I know its not recieving but its the same idea of getting yards on the ground, he's a great punt returner which usually means once the ball is in his hands he can get yards.

Moss is 7th in the NFC in YAC. Oh, and Cooley is #3. YAC is actually a strength of the Skins offense. Randle El is decent at getting extra yards too, when he actually catches the ball.
And Dan, if you wanted to keep people awake, you should've gone for the Campbell vs. Colt position battle. ;)

this whole freaking story is screwed up!!try to keep the NFL fans awake during the offseason????Say what..oh i get it your going to give us a nonexisting battle to keep us awake. Real nice..oh and campbell has screwed up enough games for us to get rid of him...not to mention half way through last season when he threw his 1st interception he seemed to lose all confidence he ever had...oh and we can look back to 2007 when he hurt his leg and we brought in our savior colins who fixed campbells mistake and took us to the playoffs...just then when we made the playoffs campbell returned and we lost!!!so this whole "campbell hasn't been here long enough for us to get rid of him" is bull. and while were on the subject i should just mention that former coach Gibbs said campbell needs to step up and start making better plays rather then little ones that won't get you anywhere. he also stated that the Skins are ready for a run in the playoffs we just need our QB to step up...which if you ask me that prob won't happen.

i would have to agree the moss thing is bologna when u have speed like he does your going to have yac but the jason thing yes you can say he isnt nothing and he sucks but to be quite honest last year he was pretty good i mean to finish the season with 62% pass comp. 13tds 6 ints and all for like 3500yards thats pretty good especially considering he got sacked 38 times if you ask me it wasn't jason last year it was then line that gave up the 1st int they started gettin hurt playing against pitt. started subing people and didnt have any depth to do so if the line holds up stays healthy and campbell gets enough time this season in his 2nd actual year of the same offense ran last year he should shine. cause i'm not sure if your aware but the year campbell led auburn undefeated through the same he was in the base west coast offense and also reguarding the 2007 playoff run yes it was great collins really stepped in and made a difference but that comes back to him bein in al saunders offense for like 10 years as a backup on top of that i mean don't get me wrong i loved the fact of seein them go to the playoffs with backup todd collins undercenter but he is too predictable thats why they lost to seattle then because collins threw the int campbell was still sittn on the sidelines but all in all i think if the redskins offensive line will hold and be healthy campbell will shine and moss will have yac mark my words

Are you saying that Campbell returned for the playoff game and therefore we lost? Collins played that game and basically had a poor showing. If you meant that we started losing when Campbell returned last season, that was eventually true, but he actually led the Redskins to a pretty good start.

bahahah this article is ridiculous. The Giants on top of the NFC East? Who is Eli going to throw to? I really hope Hakeem Nicks pans out like Anquan Boldin or Michael Clayton their rookie years.
I'm a Redskins fan but I truly think the Eagles are going to be on top.
Oh and that yards after catch thing... come on, even if you don't watch a Redskins game, just by simple reasoning you know that Santana Moss gets his yards by being able to outrun people (therefore yards after catch) and not because he's a big target. silly article.

First off I feel bad you Dan since all us Redskins fans will not be satisfied until you write the article entitled "Why the 2009 Redskins are the most stacked, greatest, sure fire team that will undeniably win the Superbowl"
It's hard no to be biased as a die hard Redskins fan but I just don't see the other teams in the Division returning to previous years forms with key losses on each team. Without getting too terribly specific I definitely don't see the Redskins finishing last yet again. Besides after pre season, Colt will be the starter so that changes everything. Just kidding...but I hope if Campbell doesn't pan out this year they give him a shot at running the offense

Wow love to see redskin nation all upity over a fanhouse blog, im gonna skip the YAC debate as moss is in the top ten in the league in this catagory (also devin thomas' only td was a wr reverse which i believe counts as rushing yards but still he has yac potential) and ill expect a retraction soon.
#1 the eagles D will in no way resemble their top flight crew of the past decade, not only because the heart of the D (b dawk) is gone but the brain too (johnson) essentially turning their d into the kid in the helmet (not the good kind)
#2 dallas is now the nfc east joke, you cant win starting special teamers (unless its quintin mikell aparently) and they wont go 70-30 run-pass its romo, hes gonna sling it id say 28 tds 23,24 ints prepare for an off fantasy year (flozell got his money, expect injury)
#3 new york without boley they are left with either blackburn or stintum to start which means portis portis portis! The demoralization of droping to the skins in the opener will be too much for coughlin to handle, dont be shocked if pierce goes down early this year, they havent caught the injury bug in a while and are about due (please can i get david carr hahahaha)and oh yeah WR wanted preferably 6'4 solid hands and wont shoot self in foot (lit and meta), chris henry need not apply

No. It's not. It's a rumor reported by one person and parroted by you.
I patiently await actual reporting and quotes to prove otherwise.

National media generally suck at getting the details straight. I imagine it would be hard to really know all the teams you're expected to know. Moss not getting YAC???? That statement is a display of the reporter's ignorance. Which leads me to my next point, because the national media can't get a detailed look at all the variables on all the teams they're supposed to be covering they are famously bad at predicting outcomes. They go for fads...the Eagles got hot at the right time and supposedly made some key offseason acquisitions, therefore they will be in the hunt to represent the NFC in the Superbowl. This sounds eerily familiar to the way people talked about the Skins going into the '06 season. I predict that Westbrook's health will continue to be a problem and that the Eagles receiving corps will still not perform. That outcome seems just as likely to me as the optimistic predictions for them that are currently en vogue... I predict 1. Giants 2. Redskins 3. Eagles 4. Cowboys.

Man Im so sick of these analysts putting down the redskins .... how can you say we will finish last in NFC East ???? We beat Philly twice last season and you think they are capable of winning the Superbowl?? The Giants dont have any go to WR unless Nicks or Manningham seriously step up and Dallas has lost several key players on defense.
Strong side LB is our only weakness right now on defense ... but Im sure Thomas and Blades will do just fine in that position anyways
Aslong as our offense does reasonably well our defense will pull us through most games ... Redskins D will be ranked Top 3 this season ... GO SKINS !!!

Dallas. The rest of these bums in the NFC East should be ready to buy a nice plasma and watch Big D. and the rest of the NFL's elite battle it out in the playoffs. Felix Jones will step in and wreak havoc on the poor defenses that MB III has pounded. That is all.
