To veteran NFL players, the preseason is a necessary evil, a four-game stretch in which they get paid peanuts (relatively speaking) and just hope they don't get hurt. But to young players trying to prove themselves, the preseason can represent a major opportunity. And Redskins backup quarterback Colt Brennan says he's going to make the most of that opportunity.
In fact, Brennan -- who played very well in the 2008 preseason but never saw the field in the regular season -- sounds like he thinks that with another good preseason in 2009, he could be ready to take the starting job (currently held by Jason Campbell) in 2010.
Here's what Brennan said on Sporting News Radio's The Monty Show (via PFT):
"I gotta step in this year," Brennan said. "They've already made it clear that they're going to play me a ton in the pre-season and we gotta play four very talented teams and talented defenses and that's going to be my test. ...I think Campbell is the Redskins' quarterback of the present and of the future, so I don't think there's a whole lot Brennan can do in the preseason to become the starter in Washington. But I do think Brennan can parlay some impressive preseason performances into an opportunity to start elsewhere, much as Matt Hasselbeck did when he was stuck behind Brett Favre in Green Bay. Brennan has the right attitude toward preseason preparation.
"Right now it seems like it's in everyone's hands," Brennan said. "For Jason Campbell it's his last year, it's in his hands to go out and earn that second contract and earn that for him. And for me in the preseason it's my chance to go out there for the second year and prove that I belong and have a great preseason and show that I belong and maybe could be a starter one day."

I think that was one of the most irritating, hopelessly inferior attempts to be funny, I've ever read.

That was a stupid enough statement to really have been Lil Eli. Seems to me the Eagles sat Eli and the Leg-shooters down last year.

why does michael smith assume that Campbell will be the QB of the future? I know he isn't getting that impression from Dan Snyder. I could see Colt getting a chance if the skins end up out of the playoff race early, campbell struggles, and they are looking to the future--similar to when Trent Green was the 3rd QB and was given an opportunity to play. Then Smith compares Jason Campbell/Colt Brennan to Brett Favre/Matt Hasselbeck. What a terrible column.

The statement meant that the NFC East teams other than the Giants haven't won anything in years. I as a Giant fan want those quarterbacks to keep playing. Yes Docter Blunder...the Giants got beat, but my point is that these other guys won't sail their shipe in the right direction. Thats what we like.

wow the guy who wrote this is an idiot...the Redskins already stated if campbell screws up at any point in this season then hes being benched. Not to mention the Redskins said early this offseason they aren't looking to extend his contract after the season. Being an actual Redskin fan my self i know this. Don't believe these stupid stories half of them aren't true!

No Redskin has said they would sit Jason nor that they would not extend his contract. Redskins GM of operations Vinny Cerrato said they would take a wait and see approach. I don't expect Jason to be benched unless he plays really bad because if he fails then coach Zorn will surely be out of Washington too.

i think jason will lose his job after this season if not sooner i believe its high time that they give colt brennan the starting job jason has had to many chances to be the qb and he has shown that he cant score hardly any points i think if colt gets in there i bet he will get the ball down the field and score more points in 4 games than jason could score in a whole season people put colt in and i bet they start winning we need a qb thats not scared to throw the ball down the field goooooo colt

I wanna see COLT!!!!! Looks like a gunslinger. We got the running...we got receivers...we got the Defense...we need points!! And I think Colt brings it!! JC is too scared and he holds the ball WAY too long. Watch Colt in preseason...HE WILL BRING IT!!! He also may throw some INT's......

hey kevin im glad you enjoyed the beatdown of the giants at the end of last season. maybe it will make up for the numerous ass kickings both eli and the plax (who is an idiot) handed the squabs. oh and for all the cute comments about eli's intelligence and playing ability, maybe you should do a comparison. im sure that eli knew that there were ties in football. and if i remember correctly both qbs started the same amount of super bowls. both played against the same team and almost the same defensive roster. one qb threw two 2 fourth quarter tds to win the game with 42 seconds and become the MVP. the other guys arm got tired in the second half of the game and mediocred his way to a 3 point loss. and the same guy was throwing to arguably the best reciever playing the game at the time. hmmm...

y does everyone think colt brennan is a savior...1 good preAseason game and everyone thiks hes the next peyton manning...at least give him another yr on the bench and maybye next year if jason is gone then give him his opportunity...but just let jasonhave a chance to prove himself in his final yr of his contract...he doesnt have to be spectacular just dont turn the ball over and let the defence take care of hims...i say he gets 18-20 td passes 3000 yards and maybe 7-9 ints
