Donte' Stallworth has his life -- something that can't be said about Mario Reyes, the man he accidentally hit and killed with his car in March -- but it barely resembles the one he once knew just a few months ago. Even though Stallworth only received 30 days in jail (followed by a year of house arrest and eight years probation, not to mention a financial settlement with Reyes' family), he was suspended indefinitely by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Worse: ha has to live with the burden of killing a man with a family as he came home from work.
The case is closed and Stallworth's fate has been determined, but yesterday the 911 call was released to the public, shedding light on how events unfolded as they happened. Via NBC Miami:
"Ok, listen, listen...This guy just ran in front of my car and he's (expletive) laying in the street dude...I, I...," Stallworth says in the call, released yesterday for the first time.
"So you hit somebody in the street?" the dispatcher asks.
"Yeah, you gotta send an ambulance right now man," Stallworth responds. ...
"He ran in front of the car sir, he like jumped in front of the car," Stallworth tells the dispatcher. He then expresses the grim situation, saying "Oh no. (Expletive). Oh my God, this guy is...oh..."
Update: audio below, and, well, it's pretty tough to listen to.

this was a tragic accident. it is very unfortunate that this man passed, yet I dont think donte stallworth is completely at fault. I think if he were 100% responsibile he would have been in jail for vehicular homicide. At the very least Mr. Stallworth stuck around and admitted guilt and was completely cooperative with the police investigation.

after listening to this. my feelings are this could have happened to anyone. even not having anything to drink. he seems very in control considering the situation at hand.

Donte said he flashed his light's at him. Most people (if having that much time) would have braked instead. Donte said he didn't hit the man...the man hit his car. (My face stopped that bullet). I would just like for Donte to recieve what I would have if I was legally drunk...speeding...and killed a man.

I'm certainly not condoning the fact that Stallworth was DUI,but Mr.Reyes was also to blame in his own death. This was a very busy road and intersection, and Mr.Reyes could just as easily been struck by a driver that was not DUI.Crosswalks are there for a reason, and when somebody fails to use common sense for their own safety,it can turn out tragic. It's just way too easy to blame the survivor and excuse the deceased in a case like this.
