Jets Interested in Plaxico Burress, Unsure Of His Legal, League Status

Plaxico Burress might be able to find a new NFL team without having to find a new home -- and without having to hop on a plane for his next court date -- as New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has confirmed interest in the former New York Giants receiver.

But Johnson also said he considers Burress' current status to be "a holding pattern," because he doesn't know what will come of Burress' pending gun possession charges, and he also doesn't know whether Burress will be suspended by the NFL.

Johnson said this on Boomer Esiason's radio show, via Bob Glauber of Newsday:
"We don't know what his current status, both legally and from a league standpoint, and until those are cleared up, we look at him like any other player-we look at the talent, if there is talent, which there is with Plaxico, but there is with other talent around as well. When those two questions are answered, then we'll proceed to the next level. Otherwise, basically it's a holding pattern."
Burress's lawyer has said he doesn't expect a trial on gun charges until 2010, which means there may be some NFL teams willing to sign him for the 2009 season and worry about his legal situation next year. Burress's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has written on Twitter that he has heard from teams that want to sign Burress.

But prosecutors have said the trial could take place in the fall, which would obviously serve as a distraction during the season. And there's also the matter of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who might suspend Burress before he stands trial. So if teams are waiting until Burress's legal and league matters are settled, Burress may be waiting a long time before any team offers him a contract.
