A man claiming to be Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback Vontae Davis was arrested on June 9 in Champaign, Ill., where Davis played college football for the Fighting Illini. But Davis insists that he was nowhere near Champaign, and that someone stole his wallet and his identity.The student newspaper at Illinois, the Daily Illini, reported on the arrest this week. It was only when the Daily Illini's report was picked up by news outlets in Florida that Davis learned the Champaign police were saying they had arrested him.
Davis tells the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that he hasn't been in Champaign since February. He said he assumes that whoever stole his wallet is the person who was pulled over and charged with unnecessary vehicular noise and driving without a valid license.
Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene tells Pro Football Talk that Davis attended the Dolphins' Organized Team Activity on June 9:
"I spoke to Vontae, and he told me he was in South Florida all day on June 9, the day the incident supposedly occurred," Greene wrote. "In addition, we had a scheduled OTA that morning that Vontae attended, and he also attended a rookie life-skill session that afternoon.
"Finally, we also know he was in the building at 7:00 a.m. the next morning. So, in addition to Vontae's own word that he wasn't in Champaign, it's almost physically impossible for him to have been there at the time the incident allegedly took place."
