MMQB: Williams Didn't Lift As a Lion

Roy WilliamsThere are whole lot of people who deserve blame for the Lions' ineptness.

It starts with owner William Clay Ford--teams that are bad this long never have a competent owner. If filters down to former GM Matt Millen, who left a swath of destruction as a GM that may never be topped. But apparently you have to point the finger at the Lions training staff as well, if Peter King's most recent Monday Morning Quarterback can be believed.
Cowboys wide reciever Roy Williams has been on a weight-lifting program this offseason. No real news there, as you would expect every NFL player, especially ones being paid $9 million a year, would lift weights. But according to King, this is the first time that Williams has ever been in an offseason weight program.

"I'm serious,'' this acquaintance of Williams told me. "Roy never lifted before. Now that he has, and now that he's serious about making himself a great football player, especially with T.O. gone, I think he's really going to have a good year.''

When it comes to the Bengals (a cheap owner who skimps on scouting and pays himself as the GM) and the Lions (an inept owner who won't change things even when they are going horribly wrong), it's pretty hard to shock at this point. But if the Lions are so inept that they didn't even have a consistent weight program, well then it's hard to imagine they'll ever get this straightened out.

It also doesn't say a whole lot for Williams. Even if the team wasn't forcing players to work out, you would think that a near-elite NFL receiver would know that some bench presses and squats might help him reach the next level.
