Father of the Year? Not Travis Henry

Travis HenryI hate to make light of someone with multiple kids, especially if they're not available to take care of them all.

But Travis Henry has 11 kids.

He's done multiple interviews in the last few years saying he wants to take care of the kids. The last time Henry was in Dallas, though, he attended a Pacman Jones party -- then a few days later, he got popped by police.

Henry is in jail for some issues. Like I said, I'm not making light of things, just trying to figure out how somebody can be this socially irresponsible.

Henry is a former NFL player who has made millions of dollars because of his talent. But he's blown it all, telling the New York Times in a March interview, "I've lost everything in this mess I've gotten myself into."

It's a shame.

Now, Henry wasn't some talented player who wasted away. He got what he wanted out of the NFL: a nice income and some fame. The NFL got what it wanted out of Henry: somebody who can produce until somebody better comes along.

But Henry didn't do something most NFL players should do, which is handle themselves away from the game. No way should this man have 11 kids with multiple women.

"They've got my blood, I've got to deal with it," Henry said about taking care of his kids. During the interview with the Times, Henry was on house arrest in Denver.

It's interesting to see how Henry wants to take care of his kids. Henry said he loves each and every one of his kids and plans to take care of them and develop relationships with the children, as well their mothers.

At some point a man has to settle down and well, wrap it up.

"I did use protection at first," Henry said of using condoms. "Then they'd be saying they'd be on the pill. I was an idiot to trust them. Second or third time with them, I didn't use it. Then, boom!"

Henry told the Times he felt trapped by the women because of his fame.

Really? It's not like Travis Henry was a superstar. He was a pretty good running back. He rushed for 2,794 yards with 23 touchdowns combined in the 2002 and 2003 seasons in Buffalo. But his last real NFL season was in 2006, when he rushed for 1,211 yards with seven scores for Tennessee.

Henry showed promise on the field, but his behavior away from it took it away. He destroyed his career. And now with the latest situation, who knows if Henry can take care of these kids the way he wants too.

We've heard him say that he wants too, but the only way he can really take care of them -- by getting a big-money contract in the NFL -- is no longer a possibility. He's in jail while his kids are free, wondering just what in the world their dad was thinking.

"My counselor asks me, 'How can you do the same thing over and over?' " he said.

We wonder the same thing.
