The Texans signed kicker Kris Brown to a four year, $10 million dollar extension. This includes $2.5 million dollar guaranteed, making him one of the best paid kickers in the league. This happens to refute linebacker DeMeco Ryans' recent contention that the Texans don't reward their own players. Ryans and the Texans are working on a long term deal, and Ryans is a little grumpy that TE Owen Daniels, CB Dunta Robinson and he don't have them worked out yet. Maybe they are next in line? After a kicker?
One question is whether Brown's accurate performance of the last two years is going to continue. As FootballGuys.com notes, Brown has improved in scoring performance every year as a Texan, especially so since his scoring opportunities improved after Gary Kubiak took over head coaching duties.
Personally, I believe the Texans offense will be better in 2009 than last year given the continuity on that side of the ball, and those players having another year in that system.
Texans special teams coordinator Joe Marciano noted in a recent speech at the Texans All Access event that he reworked Brown's mechanics to minimize unnecessary movement in his kicking motion. Marciano describes Brown as being in the zone as of late.
Along with left guard Chester Pitts, Kris Brown is one of only two original Texans from the 2002 expansion team. Which means, like Texan fans, they must be some extremely resilient people.

I think this is a good signing for one of the better kickers in the league. A clutch kicker is hard to find but is very valuable to a team hoping to take the next step. You would know better than I if Kris Brown is a "clutch kicker" but he seems to be pretty consistent. Kickers can tend to be pretty inconsistent year to year (lights out one year, run-of-the-mill the next). From my (until recently) outsiders perspective, Kris Brown seems to be one of those that bucks that trend. I, of course, could be wrong. :)
