Report: Rex Grossman Lands in Houston

Houston, we have a Sex Cannon!

It looks like free-agent quarterback Rex Grossman finally found a home for the 2009 season on Thursday. The Houston Chronicle and Drew Rosenhaus' Twitter page are reporting that the former Bears signal-caller will sign a one-year, $620,000 contract pending a physical on Friday. The team hasn't made any comment, citing a policy of not commenting until a deal has been officially signed.

If Grossman indeed joins the Texans, it would be a surprising change of direction for Houston.

When the team added Dan Orlovsky in March, it was generally assumed he would backup Matt Schaub, with second-year man Alex Brink serving as the third-stringer.

Now the picture is a little muddier. Grossman may force Brink off the roster, may be gone before the season starts, or there's even a chance that he may slot in ahead of Orlovsky. Schaub has missed five games in each of his two seasons as the starter in Houston, so it makes a good deal of sense for the Texans to be sure they have as capable a number two as possible.

At the minimum for a seven-year veteran, Grossman provides them with a low-risk look at a guy with a lot of starting experience. Granted, he hasn't been the most productive quarterback on the planet, but when the other guy in the mix is best known for running out of his own end zone, everything is relative.

Grossman probably hoped for more than a shot at a number-two job behind a well-entrenched starting quarterback when he hit free agency in February. It's June 11th, though, so choosiness is a luxury he could ill afford.

On the bright side, if he does get into a game for the Texans, he'll get to throw to Andre Johnson. They don't build receivers like that in Chicago.
