Apparently, Brett Favre Is the Victim Here

Good news: the Vikings are still in the running for Brett Favre. Despite reports, head coach Brad Childress hasn't given Favre a deadline and even admitted that he's "anxious to see exactly what he's got left in that cannon because he had a pretty good arm as we know."

Yeah, if this is 2007.

Whatever, Favre Watch '09 continues unabated. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the ole gunslinger's return, Childress isn't anxious about the situation. "I'm not losing sleep or anything ... I'm not on any mood elevators or anything like that. You always will want to see that, yeah." Good to know.

Tarvaris Jackson, however, could probably stand to do with a little less Favre, something he went through last offseason, too.
"If you had to hear it year in and year out, all the time, eventually you're going to be tired of it. But I guess it just comes with being the quarterback for the Vikings right now. It is what it is."
Hey, Tarvaris, how about you suck it up? Because according to NFL.com's Jamie Dukes, Favre is the real victim here. (No way Dukes believes what he wrote, but for the sake of argument, let's pretend he does.)

Dukes points out that if the Packers hadn't run Favre out of town last year, we wouldn't currently be subjected to round-the-clock Favre coverage. Right, because prior to last offseason, Brett never talked about retirement and used it as an excuse to skip out on voluntary workouts and minicamps. Also: I wonder if Dukes really thinks Favre was willing to hang out in Green Bay if Aaron Rodgers won the job. I'm going with no.

There's more.
I don't understand why it's a big deal that Favre wants to play football again. He should be allowed to play as long as someone is willing to sign him. The way I see it, Favre has done nothing wrong. He still has it. Look at last season - he played fantastic until he hurt his arm late in the season.

Look, I understand if you don't want Favre on your team, but it's hypocritical to say he should stop playing because you think it's time for him to stop. What if I were to tell you that you have worked at your job long enough and it's my opinion that you should look for something else to do? You would tell me where to go.

Favre is entitled to the same liberties as anyone else.
Really, Jamie? That's your argument? That we shouldn't be hypocrites? Here's the thing: if Favre didn't fake retire every year, and if it didn't result in an offseason full of daily "will he or won't he?" coverage, I wouldn't care what he did. And I think that's pretty much how everybody else feels.

In fact, I haven't once heard somebody argue that Favre should quit playing football solely because he's washed up. Kurt Warner is proof that guys, even well into their 30s, can play well. Nobody's clamoring for Warner to call it a career. Funny how that works.

As far as I'm concerned, Favre can play until he's 50. I'd just prefer not to be beaten about the head with it February through August. But maybe I'm just being selfish since, you know, Favre is entitled to the same liberties as anyone else. Or something.*

*Seriously, Dukes can't buy into this. Until I hear otherwise, I'm going on the assumption that he wrote this post at gunpoint.
