The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly given Brett Favre an ultimatum, telling him that he has a deadline of this week to sign a contract with the team, or else they'll go into the 2009 season without him. The problem, of course, is that deadlines are only meaningful if they'll be enforced, and no one who has followed this story could really believe that this one will be.
Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder of ESPN report:
Vikings coach Brad Childress has imposed a deadline of this week for Brett Favre to decide whether he will be the team's quarterback for the upcoming season, according to two sources. That's all well and good, and I'm sure Childress does want Favre to make up his mind already, but let's be honest here: Everyone wants Favre to make up his mind already. That doesn't mean he actually will make up his mind. And are we really to believe that Childress -- who from all accounts is enamored with the idea that Favre will run his offense in 2009 -- would tell Favre "thanks, but no thanks" if Favre waits until July 1 to agree to terms with the Vikings?
Favre, however, is apparently reluctant to commit to playing a 19th NFL season without first being more confident the arthroscopic surgery performed recently on his throwing shoulder has succeeded in eliminating all of the problems related to a torn biceps tendon.
The truth is, it's entirely possible that Favre will ignore this "deadline" and still play for the Vikings. It's also entirely possible that Favre will tell the Vikings he'll play for them before this "deadline," and then change his mind before the start of training camp and say he's decided to stay retired after all.
I don't know what Favre is going to do, but I do know that anything we think we know at the end of this week is subject to change as training camp draws near.

Brad Childress should be fired for this stunt. Is it really worth throwing away the season (pun intended) in order to fill some seats with Wisconsinites and sell a few purple #4 jerseys?

The answer to both parts of your question is "Yes!" Brett Favre coming on board would not sell anything if the buyers didn't think he could give them a chance to a super bowl. And I don't think the Vikings Leadership would bother with Favre if they didn't think he could do something for the team. One other point - I think they know what is best for the team than you do.

I say - Take the plunge - suprise them - say yes now - 100 percent in two weeks maybe not - but by August - Yes and September definitely ! - Worst case scenario - best back up Quarterback in the league - bettering the quarterbacks on the team, and MOST LIKELY scenario - arm is ready by July and August - can start learning plays right now - say yes, start preparing.

this could end going 2 ways , 1 the Vikings get an awesome player that finally helps them win a super bowl and help us fans to forget the Herschell Walker debacle or we end up with another has been QB in the same vein as Jim McMahon and our epic frustrations continue

The viking's have been through enough!--they got randell cunningham after he was done, warren moon, and jim mccmahn, roger craig too.all after there prime.they do not have a qb they can count on. so get favre in there and get it done, and quit dilly-dallying around.and give us something to believe in

Part of his demands are a private room at the stadium where he can throw tantrums as well as INT's.
