Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed Tuesday at the team's OTA that veteran linebacker Greg Ellis will be traded or released and will not return to the Cowboys in 2009.FanHouse's Calvin Watkins was the first to report last week that the Cowboys were shopping Ellis.
Based on what Jones told Dallas reporters, the team is in no rush to make the actual move. Ellis will not be attending OTAs, and Jones said he's given Ellis and his agent permission to try and arrange a trade with another team if they can. The Cowboys would rather trade Ellis than release him and have to pay the $1.5 million guaranteed portion of his salary, but his $5.6 million salary and his salary cap number of $6.25 million are likely to make a trade difficult.
From Tim MacMahon at the Dallas Morning News:
"We're not in a big hurry to technically do anything," said Jerry Jones, who talked to Ellis this morning. "He's looking at his options, and we're looking at our options. But it's probably likely that Greg will be playing somewhere else next year. We'll see how that goes the next few days."The Cowboys are moving away from Ellis because they want to move 2007 first-round draft pick Anthony Spencer into a starting role.

Well, JJ, you have just gotten on my last nerve...there is none left!!! Greg, many thanks to you for serving the Star well and for so many years. Your leadership will be sadly missed. Godspeed to you and may you do well. I just hope you will come back and retire as a Cowboy!!!! Jerry, you have taken this youth movement a bit too far!! There has to be a good balance of the veterans and rookies for a team to be successful, and our leadership veterans are dropping like flies. Get a grip!!!!!

Jerry Jones have got to be the biggest dick head in the NFL...why would you want to trade or release Greg Ellis? He's been very productive on the field and a class act. Jerry we need veterans in our team and Greg needs to stay a Cowboy..you want to get rid of some? Why don't you fire your Offensive Coordinator, he can't game plan to save his life. Like I said before if Terrel is double teamed that means someone is open. 11 on 11 right?
